K.J. Yesudas is among 27 eminent Indians selected for the Padma Bhushan award this year. The names of the winners were announced as part of the Republic Day celebrations. This is a very fitting award for one of the greatest singers that India has ever produced. Congratulations, KJY!!

It is heartening to note that we are alive to the issue. Since the arguments presented here follow two threads, I shall dovetail my response along those lines:
1. As for Vinod Jesudas being an insensitive, spoilt, brat, I couldn't agree with you more! Indeed, it is ridiculous that one who went to a third rate american university(he went to the Univ of Miami) on the strength of papa's riches and one whose command of malayalam is abysmal(he shares this "distinction" with at least Vijay Jesudas - I don't know about the third son, Vishal) can just sit there and talk about royalty!
I shudder to contemplate some scion of the family of the father of the malayalam language (Ezhuthachan, surely) demanding royalty from every user of the language!! Long live capitalism and its Gatesian version in modern times!!!
2. Mr.Abraham does attempt to build up a cogent argument, but I'm afraid I fail to agree with you, sir, for, I think your reasoning is specious.
(a) It is inconceivable that Vinod could take a position on his own, on an issue of such gravity. Surely we could suspect KJY's connivance in this affair. If, on the other hand, Vinod's is his own voice(pun intended!), then Yesudas' lack of control over the family is a bigger issue than his lack of control over his voice in recent times!
(b) Indeed it is an issue with an emotional facet to it which cannot be discounted. True Indian music, nay, Indian art, is steeped in tradition - sampradayam! Which is why, the GURU(the loose translation to "teacher" is woefully inadequate)and GURUTHWAM are concepts unique to the orient and meaningless to the occidental mindset. What is more, Yesudas is a product of this tradition. As he himself waxes eloquent at the drop of a hat, Yesudas the playback singer wouldn't exist but for persons of the calibre of Devarajan, Dakshinamoorthy, Baburaj and inspiration from singing RAFI hits!! Not to mention the role Chembai played in his life!
So, one fine morning in 2004 our bloke wants poor ganamela organizers to start paying him royalty?!! Gibberish! No, on afterthought, it is cupidity on a scale that cannot be countenanced.
(c) We are entirely missing the point if we say that Tyagaraja's successors should be paid royalty. For, it is precisely this vulgar, shameless commercialization of art that he decried (for example, in the keerthanam "Nidhichala Sukhama?"). Our music, our system, our life, does not work that way, dear sir!
Newton lives-300 years after his time, we still don't pay any royalty to use his equations!
Shakspeare lives- centuries later, we don't pay any royalty to quote him!
Mozart, Beethoven, Bach live - none pays royalty to play their compositions in a concert!!
Yesudas asking for royalty? As my american friends would say - Gimme a BREAK!!

I APOLOGIZE for the multiple posts. The server was playing tricks on me. I certainly don't consider myself that important that I should be heard five times, repeatedly!!
