hallo Amirtha, the song 'Malaikkoilvasalile karthigai deepamminnuthe, fromVeera had been set
in Asaaveri- You can compare this song with old
song 'Ohohounga ponnana kaikal punnagalama'from
Kadhalikka neramillai' MD Msv!
Alsothe song Kodiyile mallikaippoo' from Kadalora
kavithaigal is also set in Asaaveri.
Re the song in Punnagaimannan 'Ethetho ennam valarthen'is set in Sankarabharanam scale and not
in Pahadi as I had initially said (Kindly excuse
me for the error- by oversight. Alsothesong from
Amarkalam is also set in the same scale -kindly
pardon me for this mistake!
Actually the song 'ethetho ennam valarthen from
p.mannan is setin Pahadi!

Naveen and Swamiji,
There ARE carnatic ragas taking more than 7 swaras. Some versions of kapi, sindhu bairavi actually take all 12 swaras (esp. kapi).
Give me sometime to locate the ragas corresponding to your blues scales.

dr.sk,
It's totally confusing-1st of all , in your previous posting you had talked about "vaan megam" and not "ethotho..."And in your latest posting(kindly read it again)you have said in the 8th line that "ethotho.."is not in pahadi. In the last line you have said that it is in pahadi--????

Arul,
There is a lot of Mathematics involved behind music. if you assume middle 'C' as 256Hz, then the next octave 'C' will be 512Hz which is twice the middle C's frequency. The distance between any semitone in terms of frequency is
12th root of 2 which is 1.05946 approx. The number 12 has come into picture because we have broken one octave into 12 equal parts.
So if you want to find out the frequency of D note, multiply 256 by (1.05946 to the power of 2) and frequency of Bb is (256 * (1.05946 ^ 10)) and so on..
apply the same logic for microtones.

naveen,
:-))). i personally don't like the equitempered calculations :-). i honestly believe that people can distinguish between these "artificial" notes and the "natural" harmonics (sometimes, even i could!! :-)) ). anyways, the links you gave make interesting reading and listening.

hallo Sindhuja, Thankyou very much for pointing out the mistake I had committed inthe text.As a person using i-net from remote place(Mayiladuthurai in Tanjore dt) my accessibility to
i-net is not so easy as you people are accessing
i-net very much freely-I encounter lot of problems
in connectivity, hence reply from me is very much
freak/or by chance.Hence my postings are made as
soon as I get connected- Due to paucity of time
sometimes I commit certain mistakes.
Kindly take this corrected postings: 'Vaan megam'
from P.Mannan is set in Sankarabharanam-also the
Amarkalam song is also in the same scale.Only the song'Ethetho ennam valarthen' fromP.mannan set in Pahadi! Once again kindly exuse me for the confusion caused by my wrong posting inadverdently
made.Thanx

Vijaykumar:
Get a microphone and insert the lead of the microphone to the karaoke socket. You can play a cd or cassette and sing in the mic along with the song.

naveen,
here is link you would enjoy. let me give you a caution tho'. most people knowledgeable in carnatic music, either really don't know why carnatic music is so good or they don't know how to explain things. so here, as with every other webpage or book, you will find enormous listing without any real "description" or explanation, but i think it's a good start!
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Forum/8424/carnatic/ragas.html . enjoy!

hi naveen,
here is a better page but the list doesnot include kApi. (also, there is a problem with a notation. i will send you an email later.) this page gives at least the common sanchArams (phrases) of the raagams listed.
http://www.rit.edu/~pnveme/ragaindex.html . enjoy.
