  Hi,
  What is the origin of Lyrics for a tune.
  I have a big convertial decision on this.
  In olden times there was not much of western music influence in tamil music. So the idea was only to compose own music based on lyrics.
  But when MDS began to get inpiration (at time called as copying) - our tfm poets! were forced to write for tunes lifted (or imported) directly from Western classical or pop music songs.
  This also forced the lyric writer to scribble some ahhs and ohhos where every they could not find a rhymic tamil word...
  Composers also started composing at their will, and had more freedom. They need not wait for the lyric writer to get mood! etc... They composed a tune and just send the tape for the lyric writer to listen, L.writer could think it over (in a ***** hotel room) and he can give some 5 different lyric per tune.
  People like Viramuthu who wants to use poetic!
  (eg:Thanneril Vervai thuli ) words were not able to write as it did not match with the beat or temp etc...So they maginified this issue as much as possible.
  Tune to lyric or lyric for tune...
  I accept both as far as it is good!...

  Do you know the music director Veda (Not Deva ofcourse)?? He used copy Western and Hindi music. He composed tunes for KaNNadhasan Songs. The music for the songs in the films like Vallavanukku Vallavan, CID Shankar, Vallavan Oruvan are copied either from Hindi or Western. But the Lyrics were written first.
  
  Another example.. V.Kumar copied the "Mara N-aam Joker"'s music in the film "VeLi Vizha" for the song "Kadhoduthan N-aan pesuvEn....", the Lyrics was written first based on the situation of the story line.
  
  I also agree with you that I can accept both
  "Mettukku paattu" and "paattukku mettu" if and only if the song syncronised with the scene/storyline and with good music.
  
  IMHO you can't make tune and ask the writer to write the Lyrics based on the scene/storyline. It will look like writting songs for the dubbing films.

  Hi:
  Seeing almost everyone support paatukku mettu, I would like to raise a point in favour of mettukku paatu. Have you ever considered that a lyricist would have to be inspired to write lyrics, just as much as an MD has to be inspired (not by other music :-)) to create music ? The story writer inspires the Director, who in turn inspires the MD, and who ends up inspiring the lyricist. Is that a crime ? IMO it only aids in making a movie or, in particular, a song sequence more cohesive. I could come up with any number of songs that have lyrics perfectly complementing the music. The songs in Mudhal Mariyadhai, Mouna Raagam, e.t.c., are prime candidates. The MD greatly simplifies the Lyricist's work by providing him with the greatest inpirational source of all - music. In fact, I have always appreciated IR for the fact that though he does not know the lyrics before-hand, he still comes up with some incredible tunes that speak more than a 1000 words. And Srikanth, this has 'nothing' to do with the fact that I am a deranged IR fan :-)))). BTW, Have you considered doing a remix of other IR songs ? Sakalakalavallavan was fantastic !

  Srinath, there are many examples. You can pretty much take at least one song in every IR-VM combination movie until Sindhu Bhairavi and the case for lyrics for tunes is made. But, unless there is a fresh supply of new talented writers (which unfortunately seems to never happen in TFM), a single writer is prone to dry his creative well very fast when writing for tune. Case in point Vaali and VM of today.
  The poet Mu. Metha defended writing lyrics for tunes by saying that even Bharathiyaar had written for preset ragams. The ideal is for a writer to have some sense of music (Kannadhaasan did) and for the MD to have a high standard for writing (MSV did and IR did in his early years). Mu.Metha had complimented IR for suggesting a correction in the song "Thaen Aruviyil Nanaindhidum Malaru", in it Metha initially wrote a line ending,"...nee nilavo aen tholaivo". IR suggested that the song be rewritten as "...aen tholaivo, nee nilavo" which still conveys the same message but there is an added layer of meaning since the revised lines allude to the fact that "her distance from him may be because she is the moon". I was thrilled to learn this incident. But the same MD unfortunately okay-ed songs like "Love-unna lovvu manennai stove-u". All the other current MDs, first of all don't seem to have a good thamizh background and if they did they don't care to correct or question a hot head like VM or a senior like Vaali. So our suffering continues.

  Hi, Udahya : I feel this issue was maginfied by VM, He had to give a reason why he chose to come
  out of the Raja camp, - Vm just took this as a veda mantram and spread things around. why Raja was not bothered about Loveuna Lovu...Jinnjagku janaku...etc... Million $$$ Question.?... I feel when a person composes around 200 tunes a month - he looses track of the lyrics etc..., there has to be a qulity control on the lyric etc. I have seen ARR not accepting such lyrics, he prefers good lyrics ..Alas! he losses by not emphaising his singers to pronounce the lyric well.
  BTW Srinath , I trying out a Pon Malai Pozuthu remix! with 100% western classical BGM score.. still working on it..

  Great to hear about Ponn Maalai Pozhudu !!! Can I make a suggestion ? Will you consider a remix of "Madai Thiranthu" and "Megham Kottatum" after "Ponn Malai Pozhudhu" ? There are dozens of other songs of IR that I would like to hear remixed. On the other hand, you could also try remixing some of ARR's tunes with better sounding BGMs and well-structured Chord Progressions and bass Patterns. Hey ! How about a hybrid ? A tune of IR's with one of ARR's beat loops ! Or perhaps, an MSV tune with IR's BGM and ARR's beats ! Oops ! I think I am way off the track ! Errr...paatukku mettu or mettukku paatu..uhhh...mettukku paatu is better. There, now I am back on track :)
