IR GETS LATHA MANKESHKAR AWARD !

IR gets Lathamankeshkar award given by MP state govt.

  Guys, I understand your arguements have some validity. I got the following excerpts from web (site is given below) and it says that O.P.Nayyar has declined to get this award for same reason..Interesting..

  What a statement! Comment on Sachin Tendulkar's batting when you have not seen a single match of his! That's great! Was IR a fool in giving Lata the 5-6 Tamil songs he did? And how many south indian singers (SPB,PS,SJ,VJ etc) have done justice to Hindi songs by their terrible accents and nasal tones?
  Or are PS,SJ or ARR fools to say they are diehard Lata fans? PS and SJ both admit that Lata has been their greatest source of inspiration!!
  SJ said in an interview that she was so enthralled by Lata's renditions in 'Chori Chori',
  'Jhanak Jhanak Paayal Baje' and Anarkali that she rewound the tapes again and again and again.

  How can you compare the voice of a pure classical and light classical singer? So MS and LM cannot be compared. In fact, LM's autobiography has a whole chapter devoted to MS, and MS has tremendous regard for Lata.
  
  5)-- to enjoy a singer's voice why should we learn the language ? I don't know Sanskrit but I can enjoy Venkatesa Subrabatham... But IMHO, I can not stand LM's Tamil songs.
  You cant, strangely IR did stand her songs. Its true that LM's Tamil pronounciations are not good. But go back and read point#1 again!!!
  
  5)-- Hindi MD's ? comparing with IR ? Heard about Kilpauk ?
  If you havent heard Hindi MD's that's your fault. Even I am Tamil-speaking like you,that does not mean Hindi MD's should not be listened to.
  Listen to the divine songs of C ramchandra, Anil Bswas,Naushad, Shankar Jaikishan,Madan Mohan,Roshan,SD Burman,RD Burman even some songs of Laxmikant Pyarelal are fabulous.
  For your sweetest info, IR was music assisstant to Salil C. All this does not undermine IR AT ALL, but I want to stress that he is ONE of the nation's BEST md's
  
  -- We do not have to learn Hindi my dear. We have IR / ARR and so many talented people here. God saved us... so escaped from B.wood's mostly crap music.
  True,Bollywood's music has deteriorated today.But almost all of the above mentioned MD's are dead today or are ill. Had that no been the case, we would have had better music. Anyway you have not listened to the Hindi/Marathi/Gujrathi songs from the late 40's to early 80's.
  Moreover,ARR also composes for BOLLYWOOD, in case you don't know
  -- Britishers hailed LM's performance.. so she is the greatest heh ? Non sense.
  She is the greatest because ARR,MS,Michel Jackson,SPB, almost all Hindi MD's say so.
  Almost all of India's present singers call her their idol, whether Kavita,Alka,Sadhana,Chitra,
  even Anuradha Paudwal. In fact PS and SJ also admit this.You have no right to say that she is not great, because you dont seem to have heard her at all. You dont know about the wonderful bhaavam,strength,sweetness,range and diction that she possesses. A Marathi speaker finds it impossible to learn Urdu.But Lata's urdu diction is said to be better than that of many Muslim singers.
  
  Finally LM's award for IR is like - The great Walt Disney has created so many famous cartoon characters - How about giving him an award in the name of 'Mickey mouse' ? A Joke !
  IR did NOT create LM at all. He was one of the legendary composers she sang for.
  
  My dearest Subbu, check out your facts, dont invent myths and spread rumours. IR is a terrific person when it comes to music. But this does not mean you undermine the great LM like this, especially when you are so ignorant of her great work. BE more DIGNIFIED when expressing your views.

  One more point,
  OP NAYYAR did not accept the LM awrad. But Jaidev,Khayyam,Anil Biswas,Bhupen Hazarika and Naushad did. They all great MD'S, as good as IR.
  
  OP NAYYAR refused the award because he and Lata dont have a single song together due to a mutual dispute.
  
  If you dont know, Lata has composed for 10 Marathi movies under the pen name AnandGhan.
  Many MD's admit that Lata has very greatly contributed to their tunes, even in terms of composition.
  There is no reason IR would not accept this award at all!!!

First of all Naushad is much more commercially successful that any of the others... Secondly they are all known for scoring traditional/classical music..   I agree LM is a great singer, but IMHO she has long last her charm.. Listen to her songs since 80s.. She sounds so old! She is now just a Hype!!!
  
  LM is no multi-faceted singer like SJ or Asha.. She is best in Light/Classical only and hence she could be compared to MS.. I personally feel MS stands much taller than LM...
  
  I have seen such arguments from my NSCM (North settled confused Madrasi) Relatives who chant mantras about LM to get into the IN-CROWD of the Northies.. I hope u are not one among them!!

  Salil C has scored as multifacted music as IR.
  Also just because Naushad (or even MSV) did not use western music,it does not make him less great than IR. Naushad's songs composed more than 40-50 years ago are sung over and over gain in local orchetsras and prorammes like TVS SAREGAMA on ZEE.
  Chitragupt has also made extensive use of both Indian and western music.

  VJ's Hindi diction is totally bad. Listen to her programmes on Star (Ninaad). Her Hindi is terribly accented. So is it of SPB.Her ghazals are even worse.

  Sorry, listen to Lata singing 'saagar Kinare' from Saagar(1985). Listen to her semiclassical album with Bhimsen Joshi and her recitals in Sur Sangam,the remake of the Telugu Sankarabharanam. Listen to her song 'aakash ke us paar bhi' in 1993 (Pune National games). She sounded dew-fresh. Listen to her divine renditions in Lekin(1990),Rudaali(1992),Maachis(1995) and Libaas(1993). And to her 2 great albums with Jagjit Singh!!! Also listen to 'Ae dil-e-nadaan' (razia sultan )('82), 'Dikhai diye yoon' (bazaar)('82),'Neend nahin aati' (Sunny-84).
  Moreover people dont win the BHARAT RATNA if they are not outstanding and unique!!

  That's your wrong asumption.Lata has sung in the voice of small children as well as Janaki has. Listen to 'Tumhi ho mata pita tumhi ho', 'Yashomati maiyya se','Bachche man ke sachche', 'Phulon ka taaron ka','Chup chup khade ho zaroor koi..'.
  
  She has sung several songs that people now call POP. Listen to Salil C songs that she has sung. She has yoddled,sizzled,shrieked etc etc - everything people say she cannot do. She has sung several songs for Helen. 'Aa jane jaan' sung by LM is considered to be one of Helen's best cabarets. She has managed ghazals,mujra,bhajan,western styled songs,rock'n' roll,kawwali,folk everything possible.
  In the 50's,60's and early seventies it was Lata and not Asha who was the favourite of the top md's. In fact Salil C preferred Lata for practically all his songs, though they were based on western music.
  If you have not heard Lata in these idioms its your fault not hers. Its true that her pop songs are real rarities, but that does not mean they are not good!

  Light classical is very different from pure classical. You dont know what you are talking. Comparing a classical singer with a playback singer is absurd. Can you say that Kishori Amonkar is better than Susheela? MS does not respect LM for nothing. Great artists recognize other people's talents.
  They dont waste time throwing stray remarks as you are doing!!

  Lastly answer ONE question : At all programmes of the type of TVS SAREGAMA and almost all local orchestra, majority (in saregama a whopping 90%)
  of the songs are those of Lata only. Why???
  PS,SJ,Kavita,Alka,sadhna,Anuradha Paudwal,Geeta Dutt,Suresh Wadkar,Chitra besides all those great poets and music directors consider LATA their IDOL. Are all these crazy?
  Ustaad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan called her the ultimate manifestaion of the 'swar'. Was he crazy?
  Balaji, disagreeing with a point someone has made is not wrong. But check out the 'FACTUAL PART' of your argument.
