A MESSAGE TO ALL IR FANS.
ARR destroyed IR's career is a fact, in the last 10 years how many albums of IR beat ARR in the sales.
Kadulu mariyathai sold well. So was Sethu.
How many songs in friends were good?
Remember the Kumudam article by Kalaipuli thanu he said Kamal wanted to sell the music of Abhay to a particular company because they paid for Hey ram and it didn't sell well, he even showed the 500 rs advance that the music company gave Thanu.
Poor IR couldnt do well in a period film but ARR gave a similar period film Laagan soul stirring music that sold like hot cakes all over India and the world.
After a brilliant Thalapathy, IR should have been offered hindi film music, i don't know why nobody offered IR a decent good budget hindi film.
probably they thought he cant do it.
Water finds its own level, similarly Talent cant be contained.
IR can never give hindi music with authenticity that ARR gave.
ARR graduated from TFM to HFM and now world music.
IR is still here in TFM.
IR did earn a lot of money till 92, so after that he should have done less work, make sure each song is heard everywhere, he should please both the masses and classes.
He didnt he was self obsessed with his music, that proved so bad to his career.
Manirathnam dropped him off after a great album like Thalapathy, Balachander doesnt work with him and so is his dear buddy Bharitiraja.
All the regulars with IR dumped him and his music, so after thalapathy a possible uprising graph went downwards, its going down every day which spoils his reputation.
Take an exaple of balu mahendra, his previous films like mundram pirai and eratai val kuruvi has good music but why did IR gave tunes like he did for raman abdullah and julee ganapathy.
Weren't the tunes of these two films show any class?
Why isn't IR unable to give the music he did in the past to Balu mahendra?
he lost his pace and creativity is for sure.
IR fans : dont talk about the few songs he gave in 10 years, if IR made 150 films in last ten years for example that is about 700-800 songs just citing 10-15 songs doesnt make any sense - realise.
IR has become a kanathu thavalai, all IR fans realise this but they are unable to bear it.
I feel sorry for them.
Kamal says IR is the best but why did Kamal invite ARR to do the unity of light concert in chennai to raise funds for cancer institute? he could have asked IR to do the same but kamal being a good business man realises that IR hasnt given a great deal of superb tunes in the recent times and he is not a crowd puller. IR fans think about it.
This will show the true position of how IR is in TFM.
I read a post if society doesnt accept IR's music then they are missing something, let me tell you music is beyond any religion, even an uneducated man can tap his foot or hum to a good tune so if IR cannot produce great tunes in regular frequency people will forget him.
for example:
Remember the Titanic song - every night in my dreams, even uneducated persons were whistling that song - IR fans your reasons are just funny.
Talent finds its level - it can never be contained.
IR fans dont find lame excuses - your brains will accept it but not your heart.

srinivas;
In short, your reasons and findings are totally absurd. I have pages of quotes and reasons to cite and argue but what a waste of time to do that? If you have a sound belief on what u said let it be that way.

Saw Virumaandi, first day first show in Toronto.
If you expect another cinematic experience like Devar Magan. Sorry. This one is too real and natural to be a typically Indian Cinematic Experience. But I think it is less ‘real’ than Hey Ram or Mahanadhi. A sign of Kamal the artist coming to an understanding with Kamal the producer/businessman? Perhaps.
The screenplay is riveting and consuming. The movie was more than 2 & ½ hours but did not feel it. I just wanted to know what happens next.
Kamal’s acting reminded me of Sivaji at times – not because it was overdone. Just the style. Especially the scene after his grandmother dies. I did not realise Abhirami was such a capable actress. Napolean plays his role with such poise, it is sure to be one of his best roles, even though he does not have a big role. Both the dude playing Pei Kaman the inspector, and Pasupathy have excelled in their portrayal. Nasser does a small cameo. The other major role is played to perfection by Rohini, ex. Mrs. Rahuvaran. Even minor players like OAK Thevar, Bala Singh, S.N Luxmy, and Periya Karuppa Thevar play their parts well.
There are not many scenes where BGM is used. It is mostly natural sounds (or sound effects), but almost all the songs are used as bgm. I was disappointed ‘karumaathur kaatukkulle’ was only partly used, even that as BGM. But, 10 minutes into the movie, I knew this was not going to be a regular Tamil movie interspersed with music videos.
The song ‘katpagraham vittu sami veliyeruthu’ is used to stunning effect in the climax. I loved the way the volume of the song drowns out other natural sounds at certain parts of the lyrics. Also, the drum beats in that song, add so much weight to that scene. Beautifully done. You have to experience it.
The way ‘onna vida’ is picturised is so sensual and beautiful, but yet again, no singing and dancing by the leads. The other pick is ‘antha kaandamani’. The festival scene by night is extremely well choreographed and shot. It is a visual treat. The only singing and dancing song is ‘kombula poovu suththi’. Even here, it is made to blend in with the movie. No dancing in front of foreign buildings.
Towards the end, you see Kamal’s penchant for blood and gore peak in a little. But he has managed to control the urge quite well. No long close-ups of severed limbs etc. I am sure many people will thank their respective gods for that.
The movie also has some hilariously funny scenes. But they are not forced into the screenplay. Kamal has used the naturally witty nature of 'gramaththu makkal' to write some wickedly funny dialogues.
I found the climax a bit confusing. I could not figure out the exact reason for such wide spread riot, and the reasons behind all of Pei Kaman’s actions in that scene. To rectify this situation, I plan to watch the movie again – hopefully today:-)
As far as ‘good cinema’ goes, I still think Hey Ram was Kamal’s best attempt at it. This is a movie somewhere in between Hey Ram and Devar Magan. Very original and very rustic. Thought provoking and entertaining at the same time.
Now, I will sit back and wait for someone to tell me that Hey Ram is a crap movie, and that Virumandi is an ‘exact’ copy of some Hollywood movie, and that both IR and Kamal should role over and play dead so that YSR and Simbhu/Thanush can take over the industry. Go ahead. Make my day.

PS. I quite enjoyed the following tongue firmly in cheek dialogue early in the movie:
Ochchu Kaalai (Bala Singh) : (Calling out to Virumaandi) Sandiyare! Sandiyare!
Virumandi: Why are you calling me Sandiyar! My parents named me Virumaandi
Ochcu Kaalai: Doesn’t matter what your real name is. Everybody just calls you Sandiyar anyway.

One more thing ...
WHat scenes do u think krishnaswamy will protest to ?
Is it like Anbe Sivam which is neither commercial nor art ?Did u feel the film dragged at soem points and audiences began to feel that ?

Mnt, that's an incredible review! Very detailed and flowing!!
But I'm disappointed to hear that the movie doesn't have much bgm. thevar magan had a fantastic bgm..was expecting a similar one for this..but the songs can still make up for that..

Ramki,
Krishnasamy will have to find something to 'protest' to, if he wants some more media exposure. Especially with looming election at the centre and newly forming alliances in TN:-)
But the 'Thevar kula perumakkal' might find it offensive that except for Virumandi, Annaladchumi, and Suppaaththaa (who is a minor character), all other Thevars in the movie are 'bad people'. By contrast Nallama Naicker (Napoleon) and his people are shown as 'good people', except Nallama Naicker just loathes Koththaala Thevar (Pasupathy). But even then, none of the characters are depicted as devilish, as most cinema villains are. They all come across as very human.
Like someone else pointed out here, the same events are repeated in the first half of the movie. The first half happens in flashback. First with Koththaalan recalling events according to him. Then Virumaandi narrating the same events from his point of view. Both these points of view vary very much of course. Kamal, as the screen play writer, has done a very good job of keeping both these interesting. He repeats just enough shots for the audience to make the connection, then Virumandi's naration deviates from that of Koththaalan.
Also Koththaalan's naration is disjointed and is not cohesive - by design, to show that he is making it up as he goes along. When we hear Virumaandi's version of events, everything makes sense and events start to take proper shape in our heads.
Some might find this style of narration boring. I found it quite interesting. It has been done before in lesser movies like 12B (and Revolving Doors). I think Kamal has done a good job of it here in a very serious movie.
I liked Anbe Sivam as a whole, even though it had some major holes in the script and Nalla Sivam's characterization PRE and POST accident. I just think Kamal failed as an actor to grasp the fact that they are both the same people and should have had primarily the same mannerisms and characteristics. The director (Kamal again?) also failed to recognize this. But I felt that was a fairly good attempt at what folks like Balu Mahendra and Sujatha call 'middle cinema'.
I think Virumaandi is a much better attempt at 'middle cinema' as there are no glaring holes in the script or characterization that I could detect.
I don't think of it as 'neither art nor entertainment'. I look at it as 'art with the right amount of entertainment mixed in to make it commercially viable' :-)
