get ready for another round, guys (timepass panna venaam:-))]. no IR or ARR bashing, please, muthallaye sollitten. let's just discuss how each of them has used various instruments. for instance, IR's use of acoustic guitar is unparalleled, while ARR rarely uses it. similarly, IR `pales' before ARR when it comes to electric guitar or keyboards (strictly IMHO, everyone's welcome to disagree). start shooting.

one song(there are many!) which has always had me spellbound was poomaalaiye, thol sera va from pagal nilavu.this song has so much in it,everytime i listen to it there is some finer aspect that i am able to pick up.can some one who knows music explain what feature of this song makes it sound so different?this has a majestic opening and the tempo is maintained throughout.I wonder how quickly IR composed this song.

Other good examples of IR's chorus are in the interludes of:
1. Sundari Kannal oru seidhi(Dalapathi)
2. O Priya Priya(Gitanjali)
3. O Mannavaa (Walter Vetrivel)
4. Vandhaal Vandhaal Rajakumari
5. Anjali Anjali(Anjali): Here, I mean the accompanying male and female choir sort of humming, not the kids' voices.
Each of them is in WC style and is awesome.

I think I have been in an appreciative mood. I think when Srikanth said IR's chorus was just for singing la la .. I should have pointed out that he is making a underestimate of a generalisation. I think enough posts kinda validate my view.

Kiru, lalala was an example...to a way of singing...there were not many backing vocals, like the lead itself is backed through out with a harmony. eg:raja rajati rajan intha raja or va va vanji malare....
Also , I am not under estimating, it all the what we see how we see

Krishnamurthy,
Omen had a deadly Chorus (U can see the same stuff in mudhalvanE song ).....
folks,
Have u ppl listened to "dry ur tears, afrika" from amistad. A really moving piece from John Williams. What I wanted to say in my posting was, I don't find such a chorus in Raja songs. While the songs listed above indeed have very good chorus, I won't compare it with the piece mentioned above or "jedi celebration" (return of the Jedi) -which is of the la..la type...

Dear Shankar,
Pls do not be hasty in judgement. You don't
just compose a hummable beautiful chorus for nothing. If given opportunity,IR would
inevitably do wonders. I know that. You know
that. We all know that.
Talking abt John Williams & IR,ironically enough, listen to the chorus in the end
celebration of SW:The Phantom Menace.
You will see 100% IR's trademark!
Talk abt genius! :)

ambleen,
I mentioned the same Raja trademark in Jedi celeb when I met one of our fellow DFers, Mr.Madhan.
BTW, Have u noticed the second interlude flute piece of ninaivO oru paRavai in the Titanic score ????

Shankar, are you referring to "My heart will go on" song. Just wanted to confirm, bcos, I have both the songs in CD's. I will listen today. I have already heard both of these, I dont remember seeing any similarities. Neverthless, I will listen to it today again and see if I can find out.
Shankar, I have John Williams twin CD pack (1969-99). I dont think I have this "dry ur tears, afrika" in that. Can I find it somewhere in real audio/mp3 format?

maybe future composers might come up with something new with a chorus. but it might sound out of place in todays tamil movie... but if quality movies with fresh
themes are made in the future, composers can experiment with the human voice.

Hi Gundu
The music for The Omen triology was composed by Jerry Goldsmith(performed by the National Philharmonic Orchestra of London and chrous). BTW, i know there's a trend in hollywood now whereby new composers there are begining to copy Hans Zimmer style which is basically using non-orchestra. In the process, they end up sounding like him.
My point is...i'm still waiting for that smart guy composer in TFM(whoever he's gonna be) to emulate Hans Zimmer. I'm so confident its gonna happen one day...or has it already happened?? :(

Hi Shankar
Not sure abt that IR tune & Titanic. But will watch out for it in my next round.
BTW, just like we're feeding each other with info in TFM abt who has copied who...the same is going on in HFM(hollywood film music). The no.1 thief seems to be Mr.James Horner(Titanic,Braveheart,Legend of the Falls, etc) who is loathed by almost all film music fans around the world for his 'efforts'.
So,therefore i won't be surprised at all if his music sounded like that of our Maestro's.

ambleen,
I guess I'm in violent agreement with U :-))
James horner is indeed the deva of HW....He has copied a lot of JGsmith scores. U take the theme of The Edge (the scene just before the plane crashes ) and take the theme of Brave Heart , u 'll find the similarity or atleast u'll feel I've listened to this before (the arr-song-effect :-) )
I can give u a list of cut-paste stuff he's done from Goldsmith. if u have the scores of Star Trek (movie ) and aliens, u'll find the relevance...
I'll tell u where exactly in the Titanic score does that piece come after I listen to it again.
have u listened to the scores of series like X Files or 20000 leagues under the sea ??
Mark snow is the composer and he's IMO, ARR of HW. he collects scores from various composers in bits & pieces and comes up with an impressive score.
I have seen Goldsmith, Alan silvestri and John barry in him :-)
Alan silvestri himself has copied from the master of the trade James Horner !!!!!
Listen to the title score of Abyss and Willow.
more later...

Guys,
The Kannamoochi Yennada song in KKKK has a nice Bass Guitar Piece right after the Tabla Piece (Which comes after the Andha Nadiyin Karaiyai Naan Ketten.... Antha Kartrin Karaiyai Naan Ketten... I think this is ARRs one of the most abt usage of Bass guitar.

Dorai,
I made the same observation about ARR's usage of bass guitar in the Kannamoochi song in that portion too (and had similar feelings too). If I may add, it comes out the strongest the first time it is sung. Thereafter (ie when ... nAn kEttEn is sung later), I found that the usage is less prominent. I wonder if this was deliberate.
Also, some of ARR's most prominent and imaginative use of bass guitar can be heard in the song "Hello, Hello anbu rANi" (sung by Mano, Chitra from the film "ManidhA manidhA"). It is a remake of a Telugu film "GangMaster".
Each time the pallavi ends, you can find the bass guitar springing to life and each time the treatment is different.

I have been listening to a old IR song-adi maanamadhuraiyile-listen to the beginning.the way the instruments have been handled-a...ha!
I dont know the theory of music, but 15years of listening to WCM tells me some WCM principle has been utilised in the beginning which then merges effortlessly into a Dappanguthu song.I think raaja has given us every format of music and his success was in the seamless blending of these.listen to andhimazhai-you can see orchestration in typical western classical style-especially in the second interlude and the hindustani style alaapanai bY TVG.
when i see the chappies north of vindhyas shouting themselves hoarse that ARR has taken indian film music into new areas should it read as hindi film music-as instrument handling wise raaja gave us enough to last ten life times.for these chaps nothing exists south of vindhyas.
