Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. this song sounds much better now!! When it was first released, I thought it was a great song. But later when I got introduced to modern literature, words like "amudham endra sollai..." sounded verbose and led me to believe TR is all about empty word play. After coming a full cycle, I now feel that he was after all genuine and creative.
I try to reason out; may be during the process words like "strawberry kaNNE" and "telephone maNI" were thrown at me through TFM, now I find "mukaththai thAmaraiyAi ninaithu mOitha vaNdu, EmAntha kathaithAn kaNkaL" impressive.
Those days TR was confidence personified and never hesisted to take take all responsibilities (and blames) all by himself. I guess, had he avoided his political hobnobings and misdirected ambitions of directions/camera/acting, his contributions would have been greater and solid.
Now, if I add that one of the pair involved in this song had the nick name "horse" - I would be consigned to pyre for the lack of political correctness :)). Similar names were there for TR (karadi), pAndiyan (kannukkutti vAyan), Shivaji ganesan (you-know-what)... And an inevitable culmination of casting all of them in one Chinnappa Devar movie. Days of innocence are long gone.

Venkat, the song shows how good tamil lyrics can exist in a song without looking out of place. Unfortunately, the current trend is to have lyrics like chakka maarO for such a song.

These days for well choreographed fight sequences (excellent timings and rhythemic movements) and voilent lyrics (kaathal pisaasE), they may as well advertise, "iniya sandaikaL, bayangara paadalkaL niRaintha..."

Breezy addition to SOTD. SPB is as effortless as any singer can be. I cannot recollect any other singer sounding SO effortless. I am certainly lucky to have lived when this fellow was at his peak.
I cant help thinking, "If only T. Rajendharr (M.A) has restricted himself to 4-5 songs (lyrics and music) a movie, people would have had a totally different opinion about him".
Did anyone notice SPB pronouncing "lOgam" as "lOkam", in the first few lines?? Telugu influenece?? Towards the end, however, he takes a cue from BSS and pronounces it as "lOgam".
He does the same in "vanithaamaNi" (vikram). Initially, he sings "vanithaa", but in the end, he sings "vanidhaa" (which sounds more Tamilish, IMO)

doubter: Lokam,meaning world,is the correct pronounciation. It has been 'Tamilized' as logam as a number of Sanskrit words have been.

I know that. I am just pointing out that though SPB had been singing Tamil for more than a decade, his (correct) Telugu pronounciation has not left him.
However, he pronounces the (incorrect???) tamil way towards the end of the song.

I have observed that the 'k' (sometimes 'h' too) becomes 'g' in many telugu to tamil words. Is it proper tamil or is there some other influence in this?
eg. sokam becomes sogam
akash became agash (as seen in movie reviews of inidhu inidhu kadhal inidhu)
and also people spell or pronounce names like:
Raghuvaran (which is the right version) is spelled/pronounced as Rakuvaran many places.
I have heard people say Ragman for Rahman.
Can someone clarify. Thanks.

Jag: It is Rahman, an islamic name. Not Ragman. It is akash(sanskrit) or akayam in Tamil. The confusion and misspelling arises whenever a Sanskrit word is borrowed by Tamil, because Tamil script has only one 'Ka' for all sounds. The pronounciation is depedent on what letter precedes and what letter follows. It is complicated by the transliteration of what is written in Tamil into English using the wrong pronounciation(sound). That is how you have Rakuvaran. In music you have some license to change the pronounciation slightly to suit the melody.

Tamil has the malleability to adjust for the lack of X4 ka,ca,ta,tha,pa. The thicker and lighter sounds come naturally by the preceeding and following letters. (we never say 'dhamizhfh bhadam garkha' for 'thamizhp paatam kaRka'). So, these were not needed to write the 'original' tamil words.
Classical tamil had "thisaic chol ilakkaNam" under which 'rhishabam' becomes 'itabham' (ra cannot come first in a word, sha becomes ta) and so forth. It was a well organized strategy to borrow and assimilate words in to the language, keeping the tamil sound in tact. Somewhere down the lane we became lethargic and hid it under false pride (Tamil has everything and no need to borrow) and the developments stalled. That is why today we have "hai viewers, ininikku evening programela naama oru great singer-a meet pannappOrom".
Sanskrit did this perfectly - Was proclaimed a "deva basha" and complete - and died faster. To live and flourish a language should multiply words our knowledge widens.
mmm.. Let us not hijack. SPB's pronunciation is always impeccable (within human limitations). I am amazed to see the way he purposely sings "inRikkum enRikkum nalla naalE" in Rakkamma - as Rajini would.

I agree. SPB's diction IS impeccable for a non-tamilian. By non-tamilian, I refer those who grew up outside Tamil Nadu, irrespective of their mother tongue: Shakar M, Hariharan, Yesudas et al.
Not only in 'raakkammaa'; SPB does this on many more occasions.
1. Listen to 'vandiyilE vanji vandhaa' in 'aalappOl vElappOl' (ejamaan). He pronounces 'vandi' as 'vondi', a la Rajini
2. In 'maadathilE' (veeraa), he laughs like Rajini in the second charaNam.
On similar veins, Jaanaki (Jaangi) sings 'nethili meenai koLambaakki', to suit Raadhikaa (Raadhigaa) in 'poovarasamboo' (kizakkE pOgum rail).

- Chalangai thaaL oru madhu (Mythili ennai kaadhali)
bb, do u have 'idhu kuzhandhai' song... urugi urugi SPB Paaduvaar!!
I remember AA Raj worked with TR for OTR's music. AA Raj scored music for Udhayamaagiradhu (excellent song 'naan unai mandradinen nee enai kindaadinaai' by SPB+PS) and few more films later...

- A S.Janaki song, music is by Ilayaraja. I somehow end up humming this song when I think of "aayiram malargaLE malarungaL". SJ has sung well in this simple song, especially the way she starts off the first charanam.

Good song bb!
Sujatha Cine Arts' Thyagam-1978 starred Sivaji, Lakshmi, Fadafat Jayalakshmi, VKR and others. The immense popularity of the songs of Deepam in the previous year must have prompted Balaji to come back to IR for Thyagam. (Hitherto all Balaji films had music by MSV, except for his first production- Annavin Aasai-1966, which had music by KVM). In later years, of course, his films had music by a variety of MDs- MSV again, GA, S-G and Chandrabose.
Nothing very remarkable about the film, save IR's songs. The story was that of a fishing hamlet, a scheming villain (VKR!) and a honest, but misunderstood youth(!)-Sivaji. TMS sang perhaps what is considered his best song for IR, in this film- 'Nallavarkkellam saatchigal rendu' (great lyrics by Kannadasan). 'Thaen mallippovae' is a fetching duet by TMS-SJ.
Other songs were 'Ulagam verum irittu'-TMS, and 'Varuga en deivangale'-TMS. LRA & chorus (a marathon cycling bout that Sivaji undertakes to raise money for some poor child's operation or something similar!)
'Vasantha kaala kolangal' is filmed on Lakshmi, when she breaks up her relationship with Sivaji, due to some misunderstanding (Of course, the misunderstanding is all on her part!)- but Kannadasan, IR and SJ took even this prosaic sequence to enticing heights in this song--'Kalaindhidum kanavugal--kanneer sindhum ninaivugal---'- her disillusionment and consequent abject misery is so touching portrayed in those lines. She says she is thankful that his true colours had been revealed before their marriage---but then why does her thanksgiving sound so woebegone? It is obvious-- her defiant posture is a mere facade, her heart (broken, though) is still his, no matter what-- and so the song flows in its haunting strain--
Among the best of the early SJ-IR collaborations.
