raja should retire....GIVE ME A BREAK!
i totally disagree with srikanth's statements that IR should give way to karthik raja and that KR's music in kaadhala kaadhala is an alarm to AR.in my opinion both the statements are absurd.IR after an intermittent lull , during which time he was concentrating on his music college, has now returned with a bang.he has more movies than AR right now,so people who say that IR should retire should think twice before making statements like these.
as for KR vs AR comparison,KR is miles away from
AR.all his songs in kaadhala kadhala lack depth
and lasting power.not even one song comes anywhere close to AR's 'kannodu kaanbadhelam' in
jeans.even in his first hindi film 'grahan' he has recycled a tune from the tamil film 'kanmani' which he supposedly composed.
AR has been reduced to composing just for 2or 3 films per year by IR and deva and even in those 2 or 3 films only one or two songs are above average.speaks volumes of his creativity!
one should not decide about the quality of a MD's compositions based on how many of his songs are in
sun TV's top 10 or raj TV's top 10, which i think most of the people are doing here in their aim to justify raja's retirement.deva's arunachalam song
'athaanda ithaanda' was in the top 10 according to
indiadirect.com. does that mean that the song is great or that deva is a great MD! no! these top 10
are just a farce and most of the producers give money to the tv to include their songs in the top 10.
as a raaja fan i sincerely hope that he puts KR and AR out of business befor he retires.
and one more request!
PEOPLE LIKE SRIKANTH,SHOULD DEFINITELY LISTEN TO SONGS FROM GURU AND YAATHRAMOZHI TOO (EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE NOT TFM), BEFORE MAKING THEIR COMMENTS.
disappointed ,

Gopal, Thanks
Madan, good point. I am pretty much ecstatic about Raja. So, comparisons come up. It is natural. Also, often a very stupid thing to do. I don't mind to put down any of the great geniuses. Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky are geniuses beyond compare. I am simply captivated by the structure, precision and moods of their music.
Raja is exclusive, for he has not only highlighted the beauty of folk and carnatic music, but also explored and presented musical themes of various genres. He has entertained different types of listeners with a 1,001 types of distinct rhythms, sounds and melodies constricting his presentations into a 4 minute song that I think is impossible for emulate.
However, I retract the comparisons between geniuses of Western Classical music and IR. Is not right at all to do that.

Dear Nithin,
Thanks for your acknowledgement.
You are absolutely right about IR's genius of putting various genres of music in a four minute package of absolute marvel and beauty.
IR's genius is often misundrstood and misinterpreted as something which makes him FUSE different forms of music - No, it is not at all that way ..
IR's approach towards music is something that would do an Einstein proud - very simple approach - understand two or three different systems or forms of music and make a musical piece with every possible instrument ranging from the traditional DHOLAK , flute to the modern day synthesizer, the musical piece containing all the three elements of the different systems and each system not losing its identity and beauty , yet each system soound very different from the native self - that is what makes IR a CREATIVE genius beyond compare -
My argument was that, IR may never get the accolades that are due for him - because we live in a topsy turvy world - here in Goa, last month, COKE organised a CHANNEL V live show featuring Channel V stars , Shaan, Sagarika, Mehnaz Hussain, Sophiya etc. - there was a crowd of 25,000 (!!!)watching , hooting and howling at three hours of absolute cacophony and mayhem - with such crowds getting larger and larger in India, IR may lose whatever little chance he has for getting due recognition - which is very very painful indeed - add to this the fact that being a South Indian, his chances are further reduced - I am extremely sorry if I sound a bit regionalistically cynical -but that is the ultimate fact - IR is being taken for granted. I can't just digest the fact that a song like " Do dil mil rahen hain" from Pardes in Hindi is patronised throughout the country - this song is absolute "APASWARAM" in the interludes and stanzas (saranams) - when IR's great works are silently entertaining a few people like you and me.
Anyway, it is not our loss - so, to even suggest that IR should retire is something OUTRAGEOUS AND RIDICULOUS.

Hi ,
As I mentioned hard core raja fans have come with a list - guru - is it the old kamal movie
YAATHRAMOZHI - I dont know about this. Vijay What ever you say with your intelectual music skill --
Raja is going down in his rating. Once again you have come out saying ratings are absurd..
Tell me a real song that was a big hit for raja in the past year -- you will come with only one song enai thalata varuvayo...--
or some unknown kannada film in tamil film music discussion..
I have almost all the songs of Raja. I am proud to say that. When I went to India few months I bought the Cd of Kangalin varthaigal..just for Raja's sake---the scores were really worse...
if you call Sriramane a song from Raja now way --Raja can do much much better than that song.
Raja has to put AR and KR out of bussiness...
good joke -- I am sure AR and KR are good musicians and thier skill will keep them alive..
It is happening the other way.....
I cannot hear a kannda song or a german song or a gujarathi song -- Why did those song did not pick up in Tamil......you may say tamil film fans has become deaf or the ratings and CD dealears are against Raja....
Not ready to accept the fact Raja days are over..
and thinking anyone who utters about Raja is a music terrorist.
As a Raja fan - I have every right as you to ask Raja to retire instead of competing with these miniature or liliput musicians.
Few members of HCRF (hard core raja fans)
have started about his music, his chords, his arrangement- We are not talking about his skills... It is a proven fact it is the best in the country..
That which has to happen will happen..
Raja should give himself a rest for sometime.
PEOPLE LIKE VIJAY SHOULD ALSO LISTEN to SONGS OF OTHER COMPOSERS.......then you might know what I meant...

guru is not the old kamal movie,it is the new malayalam movie starring mohanlal which was nominated for OSCAR. surprising to me that many people are not aware of this.
the director of this movie built some musical instruments on his own and he felt that only IR can compose good music and can play those instruments (obviously, who else can do it !). so he approached IR and asked him to compose music for this film and IR has done a masterpiece. all 5 songs are great and even beyond the language barrier i was able to enjoy the music.
"...PEOPLE LIKE VIJAY SHOULD ALSO LISTEN to SONGS OF OTHER COMPOSERS.......then you might know what I meant... "
if u had read my previous posting even with a little bit of patience u would have noticed that i have mentioned about the songs of jeans and kaathala kaathala.SO I DO LISTEN TO SONGS FROM OTHER MD'S BEFORE COMING TO A CONCLUSION.AS OF TODAY IR HAS MORE TAMIL FILMS THAN AR ,SO HOW CAN U SAY THAT AR HAS PUT IR OUT OF BUSINESS.
I WOULD NEVER ACCEPT THAT STATEMENT.
ON THE OTHER HAND EVEN AFTER 22 YEARS, IR IS STILL COMPOSING FOR 20 MOVIES A YEAR(CHECK MPR'S SITE) WHICH ITSELF IS SOMETHING GREAT GIVEN THE FACT THAT MD'S COME AND GO IN A SHORT TIME IN TFM.

I have a different opinion to that of srikanth's.
Music composing is not like any sport.Music has
something to do with passion for it.I STRONGLY
THINK IR HAS NOT REACHED THAT STAGE.IF YOU GO BY
RATING THEN MOST OF HINDI SONGS WHICH ARE VERY
POPULAR ARE DIRECTLY LIFTED FROM ENGLISH SONGS.I
THINK RATING ONLY CONTRIBUTES PARTIALLY TO SUCCESS
OF THE SONG AND QUALITY OF IT.
I reiterate my statement taht RAJA STILL HAS A LONG WAY TO GO BEFORE HIS RETIREMENT.

the present md's music is of the 'listen, enjoy and forget' type music.how many of the songs of AR and KR evoke strong emotions in u and touch your heart? if all of u forget for a moment the fact that you are so and so's fan and think about my question u would see why i keep talking about IR's music.
if IR gives beautiful numbers in KM and deva's arunachalam becomes popular instead because of rajnikanth is it IR's fault?NO!
that's why one should not judge a composer's ability based on his or her market ratings or popularity.srikanth gives 1 or 2 songs of kangalin vaarthaigal as examples and says that IR should retire.if that is so then based on what i hear from KR and ARR these days they should not have entered the field itself.kaathala kaathala compared to KM is crap.
in my opinion even 'ennai thaalatta varuvaala' is mediocre compared to the songs from guru and yaathramozhi.so IR still has a lot of stuff in him to give.
and i also think that IR is not trying to compete with anyone here, especially with his son also composing for films.he is doing films out of his own interest and if he is doing a good jo at it,why should he retire?what have other MD's done so brilliantly that IR has not done in the recent past?
IR is making music now strictly for his fans or that's what i feel and he should continue to do so as long as he lives.

Srikanth' argument does not hold water. Just like he feels about the remaining songs of Nammoora Mandara Hoove, initially I only listened to the Allli Sundaravalli (such a soft song). The lately I heard the remaining numbers. Particularly Sri Ramane. My request to Srikanth, go back and listen again! What I am saying, almost all his compositions of last year were not given a second hearing. GURU is out of this world, while others are really just too good tunes to be wasted on statements like Raja should retire. Immortals don't retire in the minds of true music lovers.

Dear fellow TFM members,
Does anyone know how the songs of "Vakappatta Boomi" have come out. I read in article somewhere, which had mentioned that the songs have come out well. Is it true? Is it also true that IR is working with KB? If he is working with KB, then I'm pretty confident that, the songs in that movie will be the greatest of recent past. Can anyone respond to this query?
