Isaiosai - Your long message (thanks, by the way) tells me that one cannot be CLEAR enough in this forum. Misunderstandings are inevitable.
I don't want to clarify/contextualise things anymore.
Good luck.

This may have been answered previously, but - what was VJ's first tamil song? I'm assuming the first in any language was bol re papihara. Is that right?
Naaz: Did you get my email? Just checking.

Bol Re Papihara was the first song - nationally. The first tamil song was from a film that was not released. Music was by S-G, I believe. I can check and see if I can locate the name of the film.
Kik - the message from a few days ago? it arrived. yeah.

isaiOsai,
I did not mean to offend you by my posting. It is just that I felt that the story was far fetched while I had a much more believable and cynical explanation for choosing Sadhana:-) I apologize if I did offend you. Please continue to participate.

I think it is about time I took a backseat from this forum. My words (when they are part of a rejoinder/or rebuttal/or explication) are either miscontrued/or deliberately misinterpreted/or are taken conveniently out of context - by a few posters. I am always left with the feeling of having hurt someone - when that has never been my intention or motive for participation in this thread. Others are allowed to have opinions and preferences - however, when I voice mine - my words are always, apparently, "strong" and "arrogant". I have stopped asking myself why this is so. I have never made "emotional/carried-away"statements about VJ or said she is better than the rest. My utterances have always been out of the "fan" mode, and I have consciously tried to avoid hierarchies among artistes who are discussed here. Others have voiced such rank-status things - but not me. Some are non-singers and I have said so. Not everybody has to have my point of view. But I stilled get slammed for having one (which is usually backed by more than just "sweet this" "nice that" in an analysis.) Amazing.
Sometimes it feels like I am talking in an alien tongue which lacks clarity or intelligibility. Not that I am feeling sorry for myself or anything. It has been a good innings - and a lot of fun. I have enjoyed being at the forefront of this thread and have done my best to be informative, analytical and engaging.
It is not like I am exiting the thread or anything. If I can be of any help please address your queries by my name and I will do my best to respond with the appropriate information. But as far as discussion/debate/or analysis is concerned - I must admit that I have lost my patience with being misinterpreted and misquoted, time and again.
I hope this thread goes on and still keeps it spot as one of the top five in the discussion menu on the home page. If nothing else, I am glad we all at least achieved that for a few successive months. That's a jewel in all our crowns!
Good luck, and catch you around sometime.
Naaz

Naaz,
your posts have been excellent to a large extent. Your language is great. You have given us a wealth of information about VJ.
But yes, there have been times when people have felt hurt about what u say. What isaiosai says is not fully wrong. Even I have felt you do not apply the same yardsticks to two similar situations, dealing with say 2 diff. artists.
While you statement above (in italics) is largely correct, I strongly object to the word "ALIEN" therein.

correction:
Ignore the last sentence of my post above - what I meant to say that while you have given us well thought out posts, so have many others even those which have disagreed with u.
Thanks a lot

She (VJ) even seemed to have distanced herself from the south and spent considerable amount of time doing work in the north, and hence, all those associations with the north indian artists.
No thats wrong, isaiosai. VJs career in North India lasted for a very short time, for whatever reason. Her output in almost all north indian languages - even in Hindi - has been pretty miniscule, and mostly in the form of devotional songs.
In the South, I am happy she was very successful. Her songs have brought me a lot of pleasure. Thanks

Hey Naaz:
U dont have to call it quits at all. You have done a great job, here, though u too at times have got carried away. I read isaiosai's postings and it quite clearly seems he did not mean to hurt you. Cheer up!! U always have the choice to ignore a posting if u dislike it at all!!
There's so much more about VJ we would all love to discuss. And I BET, there are atill a lot of things pending on your part. For instance besides the two albums you have to review, there are still lot of things
-discussion of her state awards in many languages
-a discussion of her work with Jaidev
-her songs in Gujrathi, Bengali and Bhojpuri
-a discussion of her famous concerts
-her Malyalam, Kannada, Telugu songs
-details of her music education
-a list of other miraculous songs (breathless acts, songs with remarkable heights, songs where she has touched a very low note comfortably, mimvry acts, songs with sudden pitch change)
- and so many more!!
I have told u earlier, take it easy, and cheer up and post again!!!
Yes, I am sure we ALL WANT YOU!!!

Was Shrutilayalu remade (dubbed?) into tamil as Isaikku Oru Kovil? The songs sound very familiar...
Thanks for the links, vinu.

I recently came across a few Malayalam songs by Vani for Salil Chaudhari. One of them is "naadanpattile" from rAgam. There are also a few VJ-KJY duets in "air hostess". One of the songs has the same tune as an old Kishore-Usha Mangeshkar duet "chhotAsA ghar hOgA" composed by Salil himself. Salil often recycled his tunes from one language to another.
