ARR Fans have been accused of being less than 20 years of age and not having the maturity to appreciate IR's works. While this is not completely true, the fact is that many of the new generation TFM listeners haven't had the opportunity to earlier IR works. Maybe we can blame time !
I have compiled a list of IR's 'rockish' and contemporary numbers, which according to me would appeal to any younger generation TFM listener.
IR fans can add to the list with their takes on what makes the song special. If possible with links where the songs can be listened to.
Let a healthy discussion prevail !

IMO, the main thing is not many songs of Raaja are dance-able (non-dappanguthu). other than very few songs like "Rum Bum Bum", none of his songs are currently "hep". Let me put out the standard disclaimer by saying that I'm very much a fan of Raaja and I'd rather listen to songs like "Kannan Nee Yen" from Ivan.
None of IR songs belong to the current popular pop genre, like those by the latino stars, beat oriented stuff like ace of base etc..
Also, not many in the above lists are post-1992. So, young listeners are not gonna go retro when (they think) they are getting good contemporary stuff anyway.

1. Kaathal Thenkudhithaa Kudaathaa (Chinna Kannamma)
2. Sittaatha Thene Sevvanthi Poo (Chinna Kannamma)
3. Dharmangal Velaiyindru Thodumbothu (Dharma)
4. Iru Kangal Podaathu (Dharma)
5. Nagma Nagma Nagma (Poonjolai)
6. Un Peyarai Kettaale (Poonjolai)
7. Papa Rupa Dhilruba (Poonjolai)-- I didn't really like this number, but I think it may appeal to some members of the younger generation, with its heavy techno beats and lyrics.
8. Panjuppola Nenju (Punniyavathi)-- I guess
9. A lot of songs from 'Kaathal kavithai','Manam Virumbuthe Unnai', 'Time', 'Friends', 'Raasiyyaa', etc.
The above are all post-1992.
btw, how come you guys forgot the songs in 'Netrikann?' All songs (Maappillaikku, Raja Rani Jockey, Ramanin Moganam, and Theeraatha Vilayaattu) IMHO, are really hip and fresh, even though they came out over two decades ago.

By the way, Vj, did Karthik Raja really compose for the 'Vilakku Vaippom' number in Athma? Wow! I guess we are really underestimating the talent in that guy. That was a really good song, the melody, the orchestration.

Friends,
There was one song ' Pazha vEl Muruganukku motta(i) oNNu pOdappORen doi' in 1987, from some Kalaignar film 'Needhikku dhandanai' or 'Sattam oru viLaiyaattu'. It is a college ragging song, has beautiful beats and goes like this: 'Copy adichchaa avan paa(r)ththukkiduvaan, pass(u) paNNinaa vEla(i) vaangi tharuvaan! indha kalloorikku vandhirukkum ellOrukkum arOharaa!'
Those days, it was a rage in college/school shows!

Let me put this way.. I don't think they forget 80s songs.. Just like songs like Senthamizh Then Mozhiyal, Kallellam Manicka, Amaidiyana Nadiyinile.. these songs came before i was born. I have collected all of them. There were not much hip hop songs there. Viswanathan Velai Venum inspiration from Eisenhower song was still popular in college festivals. We love all songs.
There is a little girl who lives next door to me. She is 12 years old. Her favorite movie is till date is Thillana Mohanambal. It was released even before i was born. Thangavel comedy and Nagesh comedy sequence are by far the best in TFM history. Still people love it. Likewise not everybody will like hip hop songs all the time.
I hate rap songs. Some people cannot live without rap songs. It is just a matter of choice. If i want to listen to hiphop songs i would rather listen to English songs than listen to Tamilcized hiphops. Ace Of The Base... original version is awesome.. compare that with its clones in Tamil..
sounds bad right? That's why i feel these songs will last only for few days.

Awe...I hope you didn't mean "Telephone Manipol"...when you said clone !
Before I continue on the innovativeness in Telephone Manipol and how Tamilcized Hip Hops by very creative composers add more richness to the hip-hop genre and sometimes sound more better than original hip-hop songs..I would like you to clarify that.

Actually, according to me...Hip-Hop as a genre is treading the path of Tamil music.
Listen to the rhythms of Missy Elliot's "Get ur Freak on"....sound like a Tamil song right ? To make you happy, I'll say it sounds like an old IR rhythm. So please don't undermine our Tamil creativity and culture....our film music is more richer than all their genres put together.
Bcos as they add more...we'll always encompass that and add our spice to it and so we are always on top :-)

And you have to accept that ARR is a master at encompassing modern pop genres.
IR works more on the system level (this I learnt from Kiru)..his experimentations are more in Carnatic and Western classical-and Classical Rock fusion.

If we all want to listen to music in its original form, none of us should even be listening to ANY TFM from the late 1950s

IR just needs to use latest modern and heavy instruments which are loud and clear like ar uses....then many numbers will completely sound latest...example: rukku rukku(friends)...anjali songs too ...especially "magic journey"...and "rathiri"...and petellam super hit (raasayya)....etc...these r great songs...but can be more modern and heavy with western instruments!!

Kiran
Well song from Nayagan had no instruments for the opening stanza "Then pandi semaile...."
Was very much popular with north Indains too.... and received well too.
So it is also the situation and the ability of director to get a good tune and compostion ok

lesa ...
I think KR or AR might have interfered in that song ...and the starting music (the one with chorus) is like Michael Jacksons music...anyway the compostition is not at all what latest crazy youth are demanding ....modern tamil song example means...in alaipayuthe the first song ...he will be singing on bike !!that is modern composition...The tune should be modern ...not just the instrument....but IR too many times composed modern tunes like I said rukku rukku from friends....but still can be more modern

u mean to say 'north indians' means modern ppl ??....modernism is an attitude , a behaviour...but in north got more modern ppl....why ?? even kasi songs too can be hit if made in hindi..that doesn't mean they are modern...

well I mean it was popular with every one. As u said "modern tunes and more modern and heavy with western instruments" does not become a song modern mr Kiran.
what u say modern now will be old for ur kids or next generation. I will be happy to see ur views then....
Well in fact the word modern is relative term.

a,
the thread is about IR songs that will appeal to the younger generation. definitely todays young ones are tommorrow's oldies. point is what is appealing to the present young generation. the discussion on word 'modern' will deflect this thread which is a healthy one. looks like kiran's postings reflect the younger generation. for example the college crowd can be determined as a core part of the younger generation. they reflect the new trends and styles and thereby the current way of life and the current music trends. which songs are on their lips? which IR numbers are they liking? here comes kiran's view. IR songs are nice, but not appealing still. there is something missing when compared with the way other music director's songs are found to be catchy. the clarity of the instruments, the kind of depth found in ARR's songs are not there in IR's songs. i am only a listner and do not know many intricate details of music/arrangements etc. but can say the younger generation are identifying something other than the tune, orchestration etc. Is it the way of recording ?

GEETH
Well I don't how u found ARR orchestration better than IR.
Well ARR orchestration is flat and mono tones that may be the reason it is appealing to college mass as u said.
Well to tell the truth, ARR songs normally don't go with the movies situations.
Well IR songs are based to the situations. and hence worth listening later too ok.
No point in explaning to ARR fans any more things....

So you think that your word is the final word?
What happened to tolerance?
How much maturity is requiered before people can accept different tastes and opinions?
