ARR Fans have been accused of being less than 20 years of age and not having the maturity to appreciate IR's works. While this is not completely true, the fact is that many of the new generation TFM listeners haven't had the opportunity to earlier IR works. Maybe we can blame time !
I have compiled a list of IR's 'rockish' and contemporary numbers, which according to me would appeal to any younger generation TFM listener.
IR fans can add to the list with their takes on what makes the song special. If possible with links where the songs can be listened to.
Let a healthy discussion prevail !

Just to add to the endless list,
" Vandal vandal rajakumari...vayyari"...my god, mesmerising, this song is not only for the new generation for several generations to come, it is Y3K ready I would say.
I sometimes used to feel, certain songs scored by IR are way too ahead of the time, and something beyond trend setting with an extreme thinking sometimes as wheather TFM is really worth / ready to have such songs scored because of the underrecognition of these gems.
It is even more pathetic that these songs were picturised very badly in the movies

I want to tell you something from Aanand
Pazhaiya Vilangu .... from Meera

Ravi K.S. Ravichandran
"Asaiya kaathula..." is one of my fav numbers too...we can categorize it under folk pop.
Another IR song in the similar vein is "Vilakku Vaipom" from AAthma.
There was one more similar song...with similar female lead and choruses with a constant tribal beat...could anyone throw more light on these ?
Vayathu Pozhapu (aka) Career :
Thanks for the links....will be listening to them shortly.
Prabhudas : Could you give a link to that song ?
Awe : I have included the Anand song in the above list you have mentioned. Somehow I didn't like the "Pazhaiya Vilangu" song.
Songs from "Anand" had great music but bad english pronounciation and lyrics (esp. "Hey you talk to me") which ruins an otherwise good tune.
(I know I am raking up a controversy here)Many of IR's wonderful music was spoilt by the lyrics, inept usage of the singer's voice and bad picturization. This could be the thing which puts off the younger generation.
But in spite of this, his music has the strength to stand on its own.

vaa vaa paakam vaa is from Thanga Magan... cosmician... you are sure raking up controversy.. because even Ilamai Itho Itho song was sung very well by SPB. Most of the songs were sung by renowned singers.Lyrics were far better than present day lyrics. Picturisation may be bad. But i think Ashok Kumar did a fantastic job in Thendrale Ennai Thodu. In Meera and Agni Natchatiram P.C.Sriram did a wonderful job.
Oru Poongavanam Pudhu Vanam
.. nothing bad about the lyrics. I don't think you can sweepingly say all young generation is put off by IR music. I know lots of teenagers who are still awed by his works in Punnagai Mannan.. I also konw lots of teenagers who are awed by "Mala Mala Marutha Mala".. song. I remember when i was in school there was this song "Vel Muruganukku Motta Onnu Poda Porendi" became so famous. They used to dance around for that song.
Does anybody remember that song now? I don't even know which movie it is from.. It accidentally struck me when i looked for a devotional song. It is the immortality, verstaility, individuality, originality that sets IR songs apart from others. IR is the difficult MD for a singer. That is what Unni Krishnan said in the recent interview. IR always knows exactly what he wants and also he is capable of getting what he wants.

Awe, This info from "The Musical Odyssey - by CSG Prasad (Published in Aside magazine of Madras June 1989 issue):
The critic Subbudu bemoans the fact that these days Mohanam sounds more like Mohana Kalyani than Mohanam. But when Raaja uses Mohanam, as for instance in the light hearted Vel muruganukku mottai onnu podapporen doi (Puyal Paadum Pattu 1988), it is real Mohanam; it does not, in Subbudu’s words, wear kurta and pajama. So too the Mohanam in Ninnukori varnam in Agni Natchathiram (1988).

Its from the movie "Idhaya thaamarai" by SG.. it goes 'Edho mayakkam.. ennavo nerukkam" with Disco shanthi dancing around... as mentioned in another thread, i was thinking for a very long time that "Idhaya thaamarai" was by IR will i saw the credits and it was SG. almost all the songs were dangerously close to be IR-ish.

how about "Vaanmegam" and "Kaalakaalamaaga" from Punnagai Mannan?
that 'enakkul oruvan' song 'megam kottattum' song had brilliant editing combined with superb music 100% apt for the situation.
"Kannan vandhu paadugindraan" from 'rettaivaal kuruvi'
"Vaanam keezhey vandhaalenna' from "Thoongaadhey thambi thoongaadhey"... superb rendition by SPB.

For the Information of all visitors either IR bashers or ARR/Harish patrtons, in one of his interviews SPB had mentioned IRs ambition was to be a role model and source of inspiration for younger genereation musicians to explore the infinite possibilities and expression of music. May be ARR YSR, KR, Bharatwaj, Vidyasagar, Harris and Prasanna( Guitarist) and many many more younger gener musicians are all a result of this effort.
But i would love to mention that Bharatwaj is one guy who doesn't just stick to western instruments just for the fact that it goes well with the youth. He uses the indian musical instruments to their merit and we must learn to appreciate this.

One more info for all music fans. What i have observed and understood is that most indian instruments are really soothing and melodious than the western ones. One reason that comes to my mind for this difference is that indian classical music ( and other forms ) is inclined towards devotional and spiritual purpose where as the western classical music and its clones and derivatives are more towards expressing human emotions. Like rock, pop and so on for joys and dancing mood, solos for deeper feelings.

Please list songs of IR which are structured completely to a Western Pop/Rock rhythm with western chorus and basslines.
From our discussions, we can add :
Oh Butterfly - Meera, Potu Vaitha Kadhal Thittam -Singara Velan, Vel Muruganukku - ?
The other nos. we have discussed fall into different categories of IR's music.
If I was a record producer, I would digitallly remaster these nos. and release them in the International market. Maybe MondoCD can do something like this.

Guys
How did you leave out
"Aattamaa therottamaa" from Captain Prabhakaran ? I have not heard such sophisticated beats/rhythms
"Tholin mele" from N.Nithya - African drums -
"Nethhu orutthara" from Pudhu Paattu - have any of you heard that kind of groovy, virile percussion usage ?
"aadum neram" from SOorasamharam - great guitar intro. and a heavy modern urban feel first interlude - the second interlude has the "Urumi" joining hands with some other western percussion and the flute slides in like a knife through apple pie!

another one 'Vennilavu kodhippadhenna' from 'Chinna maaple'.. superb beat/rhythm accompanied by violins... the same beat was used in "Oru maina maina kuruvi" from "Uzhaippali" but i think some of the songs in Uzhaippali were done by KR (as he did in Paandiyan 'Paandiyanin raajiyahtil uyyalaala' and 'Velakku vappom' from Aathma).

Interesting topic.
My picks for the younger generation (I was born in '77, not sure which generation I precisely belong).
1. Ilamai idho idho - SPB rules in this song. This song gives me goose pimples every time I hear it. To me, this song is like 'Its my life' song by Bon Jovi - pure energy and enthu!
2. Ninnukori Varanum - Raja's fusion (whatever that means) effort, amazing song.
3. Poattu vaitha kaadhal thittam - Many people don't like this song. It is a hep song.
4. Vanitha mani - mother of all hep songs, very popular in college stage shows and brings back a lot of memories.
5. Megam kotattatum - again, a college show song
6. Ilaya Nila - everyone's favorite
7. Vaanengum (Moondram Pirai) - great guitar intro
8. Sangeetha megam - another college music show song
9. Vaazha vaikum kaadhulukku jai - sexy song
10. Valayosai - This should have been in the top of the order, I guess. What a song set to Sindhubhairavi! Give me a song where someone has used Sindhubhairavi (SB) more innovatively. I recently made of a tape of my favorite SB songs and I did not come across any. To top it all off, Amala and Kamal in the movie, wow!
11. Nee oru kaadhal sangeetham - Great song.
12. Solladha raagangal - This song is a little obscure from Mahanadhi. It was not in the movie, I think. One of my favorites.
13. Rum bum bum - funky, timepass song
14. My dear Marthanda
15. Ooru vittu ooru vandhu - delightful comedy song
16. Sonna padi kelu - may be I am stretching it a little bit here, but if you can listen to 'Parkadhe Parkadhe' from Gentleman, this song is much better.
All IMHO.
