Saravanan,
Thanks for listing the other notable songs in the same triangle as the previous SOTD.
bb,
Excellent song. Pattukkoattai is another TFM treasure to be cherished. Egalitarianism is in the man's soul that it bleeds through even when he wrote non-political songs. This song is known by the refrain more than the first line of the song:
kaadu veLainjenna machchaan
namakku kaiyum kaalum thaanE michcham
kaiyum kaalum thaanE michcham

Friends,
Recently, in Kumudam, I read the following:
Pattukkottai wrote his first film song as :
"kutti aadu thappi vanthaa kuLLa narikku sondham!
kuLLa nari thappi vanthaa koRavanukkE sondham!
thattuk ketta manitharukkuk kaNNil pattathellaam sondham!
sattap padi paaththaa ettadithaan sondham!"
Some established poets (may be Thanjai Raamayya Das and Udumalai Narayana Kavi) were discussing whether it should be 'aaRadi' or 'ettadi'. One of them quipped " AEdho konjam dhaaraaLamaa idam vittirukkaan indhapp paiyan. irukkattumE! unakkum enakkum aaRadi paththumaa?!"
When he was not paid in time for this song (the producer told him 'konjam nillu'), PK wrote a slip as follows, gave it to him & went away:
'thaayaal vaLarnthEn! thamizhaal aRivu peRREn! naayE ! nERRu unnai naduth theruvil santhiththEn! nee yaar ennai nillenRu solla?'
The producer panicked and came running with the money!
When Mr Sundaram of Modern Theatres made him stand ( it is said that only he had a chair and others had to stand!), PK is said to have written a slip "mariyaadhai koduththu mariyaadhai vaanga vENdum" , which promptly got him a chair!

bb,
pattukottai is in a league of his own. In fact by the quality of his work I had assumed him to have been in his forties /early fifties when he penned these songs. so it was indeed shocking to know that he had died when he was just 29 :-( I came to know of it only thro the above mentioned Kumudam.
What about TMS kural here! Oru 2H Pencilin koormai & sharpness irukkirathu. I always imagine a b& w portrait of rustling fields and water gushing in the canals stopping just for a moment to listen to this wonderful song !
OF Pattukottai's lines I like
" sertha pannathai sikkanama
selavu panna pakkuvama
amma kayil kuduthu podu sella kannu
avanga aarai nooru aakuvaanga sella kannu"

the song captivates for its sheer simplicity which turns into a nice poetry. never heard this song before and on the first hearing it certainly brought a big admiration for this lyric writer.
this song also brings admiration for MGR - how well he transformed from this song style to Ulagam Sutrum Valiban style songs.

bb: Nice song. You have to go back to the 40s and 50s for appropriate songs. May be, you can feature 'Manapparai maadu katti Mayavaram eru pootti' by TMS or 'Eru pootti povaye anne chinnanne' by Jikki for Maattu Pongal!

nellu veLainjirukku
varappum uLLE marainjirukku
How simple and elegant with shades of haiku.TMS's voice adds to the rustic feel.Probably the vayal lies is after Thiruthani & Puthur....Banumathy!
"Iru KodugaL"-KB has always managed to retain the company of intelligent people although he could never reciprocate the courtesy....Memorable efforts by Sowcar ,Nagesh ,SVS,Sambar,V Kumar,Vali (with PS & JR in this song).

Hi all,
Apt song for pongal. Nadodi Mannan was the film which made MGR into the cult hero he became later. And what music by SMS Naidu, one of the greats of TFM. Hardly anyone gives him the praise he deserves. And the combo of TMS and Bhanumathy has given us so many memorable songs, perhaps the best of them being 'masila nilave nam kadalai maghizhvodu' in 'ambikapathy'. And pattukottai's lyrics! It was a huge loss. Have read 'alukkoru veedu' was his last film. And what a duet in that movie by PS-PBS which I have downloaded from the net (unfortunately the movie song is hardly heard otherwise). Great lyrics by pattukottai in this song too. 'Anbumanam Kaninda Pinne Acham Thevaiya, Anname nee innum ariyadha pavaiya'. When can we hope to come across such lyrical beauty again. Never, unfortunately. And wasn't it pattukottai who wrote that song in 'arasilankumari' Chinnappayale, chinnappayale sethi kelada', His lyrics in 'Pudhayal' too were simply outstanding, especially the PS song 'Chinna chinna Izhai Pinni Varum, Intha chithira kaithari selayadi, nam thennattil ennalum kondadum selayadi'. Rustic to the bottom.
'Mannin Maindan', was pattukottai. Wonder whether Kannadasan would have been as successful (in the no of songs that he wrote) had pattukottai lived for another 20 years!

Emgeeyaar Pictures (P) Ltd’s Nadodi Mannan, (released on August 22nd 1958) was produced and directed by MGR himself. Prior to its release, MGR is said to have mused aloud that its success would make him a ‘Mannan’, while a failure would render him a ‘Nadodi’. However multiple factors like MGR’s charisma, the appealing story loosely based on the popular English classic ‘If I were King’, developed by’ Emgeeyaar Pictures Kadhai Ilaka’ (comprising of people like Raveendar, Vidwan Lakshmanan, RMV), scintillating dialogues (Kannadasan & Raveendar), excellent songs by SM Subbiah Naidu, the color scenes catching the viewers by surprise in the second half, the presence of a talented cast including three heroines- Bhanumathi, MN Rajam & Sarojadevi (this was her first major role in Tamil), all worked together to ensure an unprecedented success (25 weeks), and MGR was well on his way to becoming the monarch of mainstream Tamil Cinema. MGR was presented a gold sword in a grand function at Madurai, and also bagged the Cinema Kadhir Award for the best director.
SMS worked painstakingly to create an amazing album:
Senthamizhe vanakkam- TMS (Lyrics: Muthukkoothan)
Thoongaathe thambi thoongaathe- TMS (Pattukkootai Kalyanasundaram)
Sammadhama naan ungal kooda vara- Bhanumathi ( Muthukkoothan)
Uzhaipathila uzhaippai peruvadhila inbam- Seergazhi Govindarajan (CA Lakshmanadas)
A multilingual song- Namma Dravidare kulage (Kannada, lyrics by Vijayanarasimha), Koodakkalla Kimpuma (Telugu, Narayanababu), Dravidamaam(Malayalam, P.Bhaskaran), ending with Varuga varuga vendhe (Tamil, Suratha), sung by Jikki, NL Ganasaraswathi, Vaidehi & Chorus.
Thadukkadhe enni thadukkaadhe- Chandrababu& Jamunarani ( M.K.Athmanathan)
Summakkidandha nilathai kuthi– TMS & Bhanumathi (PKS)
Paaduppatta thannanle- TV Rathinam (M.K.Athmanathan)
Maanai thedi machan varapporaan- Jikki & Chorus (PKS)
Kannil vandhu minnalppol- TMS & Jikki (Suratha)
Kannodu kannu kalandhaachu - Jikki & Chorus (PKS)
As already mentioned, ‘Summa kidandha nelatha kuthi’ was first published in the Janasakthi issue dated 18.1.1956.
Btw, Vengayam, 'Manapparai maadukkaatti' was written by Maruthakasi.

Saravanan,
Hope you have not listed down hit songs from two three movies. I am not at all able to believe my eyes that such a lengthy list of all-hit & superb songs in one and only film? Probably Nadodi mannan holds this record still. What a healthy competition all those lyricists had in a single film. Alas! Nowadays, TFM misses such a great project.
Really, as S.Ramaswamy said S.M.Subbiah Naidu is an unsung hero in TFM. I have heard only MSV mentioning about him in many of his interviews.

bb,
if ur question is about "why madurai is not being mentioned/named nowadays in TFM" then my two cents could be:
As far as natural taste for music(especially carnatic) is concerned the "tanjore jilla" people had an edge over other parts of the state. Like that, in acting, drama and its technical side erstwhile "ramanathapuram/madurai jilla" people had natural flair over the rest. South of madurai ('nellai seemai") people are more hard workers than any other parts and westerners ("kovai/selam jilla") were natural entrepreuners, though people from chettinad area (of madurai/ramad jilla) are also great in business but by and large westerners have a nice edge over others in enterprising skills.
But ironically some of the super stars of carnatic music are from "madurai/ramnad jilla" like 'Madurai'.S.Subbalakshmi, 'Madurai' Mani Iyer. Similarly first superstar of cinema, MKT is from tanjore area.
Coming back to the point, TF was flooded by madurai area people(particularly technicians) till 80s. Thats why one can hear about a lot of rasigar mandRams in madurai for even sundries. But again an irony that tiruchy takes the credit of building a temple for kushboo.
Even MGR had "madurai base" as far as cinema is concerned (that loyalty to him continued in his political life too). Shivaji was a member of madurai based troupe(s) and he too has one of his acting 'roots' owing to madurai. No need to talk about IR period, including GV, Manirathnam, kamalahaasan and his family. But now the domination of madurai in TF is not there, even though there are still many ammooru makkaL (madurai-ites) in thamizh filmdom, this coupled with not too many mofussil based films slowly has taken away naming "madurai" in songs or dialogues.
Btw, "thirunelveli halwa daa" song talks more about nellai it has certain parts talking about rest of TN and has a part "namma madurai-yila mallida".

Kupps, nice post but what I was curious about why "project madurai" (the link that SP had posted) didn't contain today's song lyrics :)
