One quick way of getting into world film stage, project India a rotten, poverty stricken, females do not have top cover, disease lavished, corruption driven in summary, god forsiken place or project undue sex driven with foreign returned director, still call that a realistic movie. Most of the so called above mentioned directors have done this sort to get "CRITICAL" acclaim. If you say on the contrary, chances are that you are branded as "NUT"
In an interview,Jackie chan ,he felt so bad of HW style of working, and way of disregarding him inthe initial phases by establishments. He still preferred to work in HK than move to Hollywood.
Incidently, whether you like it or not, Rajini made his mark in Japan

V, this is the perception people like you propagate. art is delight the audience not to reflect some weirdos intellectual abilities. Going by your judgement our commercial films and film music is all _shit, only greats like ur fricking ketan mehta, manirathnam etc.. are going to bring fame. Western critics don't make western audience, they write great about mr, km, sray and so on because they see these films at the festivals, not the people of the West. Indian musicals are a threat to western style of filmmaking, if the same propoganda they give to Indian "fricking art house" films are given with a open hearted approach to India' commercial films, the story would be different. You think the West would want to boast about IR when their musical heroes would not be that amazing in comparison? I do not prefer Ravi Sankar or Indian classical stuff to Westerm pop music (they are simply amazing., listen to 60s, 70s stuff, humongous variety yet the thing IR has done something vastly different). Any day for me a good tune and mood helps me more than thinking of God thru classical music. That is me. I want delight for the mind thru music and also peace for the soul - great commerical music provides that more than your arthouse heroes and classical mooseciains. Go fick yourselves, stop beig a pretentious great Indian bustard and don't be like those blinded Western art critics. ;---)

Hi V,
A good movie is a sensible portrayal of what a director want to convey. I dont think anywhere in the world where people just watch the so-called art movies.
Some of the indian international directors you mentioned just portray what west wants to see and does not make it a good movie. "Kama sutra" is a great example of a so-called international movie which is made for western popular taste and audience. Tell me one thing good about the movie.
I dont see any difference between masala movies and so-called international movie is that masala movie compromises logic .... these so-called int. movies compromise their own ideas and project something western or sensational. There are exceptions like Adoor, Satyajit ray and Mani Ratnam.
Most so-called international directors thrive on sensationalism than logic. Deepa Mehta and Shekar Kapur are the biggest examples of this.

velji,
Also, I dont see any reason why kamal should retire. He will retire if no one enjoys watching him. The role he plays are acceptable to his age and looks. After movies like Anbe Sivam, I dont see why he should not continue. To me, Anbe sivam is one of the best movies in tamil cinema. He is making alot of sensible movies. I dont think its sensible for him to retire now. Yeah he should abstain from making movies apart from comedy movies... he is on par with any comedian and serious movies like anbe sivam. I think he is clever enough to know which movies will suit him as he did with the Madhavan starrer Nala Damayanthi.

Vatsa: ur point is on target. sensationalism means awakening for the likes of shekar kapur, mani rathnm. bulsht. i've nothing against all this fellows lookin reality and art and then put masala in it to entertain. entertainment is not comproming it is pure story telling to delight the child in every human. i am not watching citizen kane, pather panchali etc.. for entertainment, but maybe when i want to understand some dark perspectives. personally i like uthayakumar to mani rathnam or sridhar to balachander. there is the downto earth feel of directors who want to entertain. That is why I like Kamal Haasan despite for his want of hir original themes, he treats stories with going intellectual - look at Aalavandhan, Kalaignan, Indian, Indran Cgandra and so on pure entertainment and lookin at some political social issues without slammin those issues on the audience. I haven't seen anbey sivam yet, but will not miss a kamal film. and in entertainment Indian commercial films are no less than hollwyood films in fact much better with original and commendable comedy and sound tracks. get those from those serious directors like mrathnam, skapur, kamafrickinsutra mira nair (i too swa it, what a dumb sht). If not for these elements, i would even avoid malayalam filsm, which tend to tackle serious issues in a depressin manner.
My point is, I don't like Kamal as a person, egotistical fella, but as a film maker he has few parallels not only in Indian cinema but world over. A lot of people should learn from him the true approach to entertainment.

Velji,
Kamal's that youth thinking has changed. In Anbesivam there was no smootching or gross seens. He just gave what the movie was required and I think he will continue like that from now.

It is horrible and sad that you guys have included directors like Deepa Mehta, Mira Nair and Shekar kapur into the club of elite art directors.
People like Adoor, Shaji N Karun, MR do not need to shown nudity. They do not need to show poverty They do not need to show disease etc.
Have you watched "Vanaprastham" by Shaji N Karun? Tell me. IS it what the west want to see of India? Suhasini is a princess in that movie!
Oh so you think west want to see only "India" in a povert stricken state? What about Roman Polanski's Pianist? Didn;t he show a Polish guy eating stew fallen in the gutter?? Where did your intellectual minds go then?
I would like to discuss more with people who have actually seen some hollywood and foriegn movies. Not with ones who have some immature pre-concieved and stubborn notions about foriegn films.
If Kamal wants to really make good movies he should do something like Hey Ram remving his actress enjoying scenes.

naansense,
I am not against depressing movies or anything realistic. I am against movies which pretend to be realistic and are so dumb which are praised here (Its as though all commercial movie are dumb and so-called art movie are most intelligent ones).
velji,
To make things clear, I am against kamal's earlier trend of one kiss scene per movie ... its just athigaprasangi thanam. The media sensationalises it too.

Hello V,
I am not against any international movies.
I have seen some foreign movies. May not have seen as many as you would have. But, if you see the movies which are shown across the world as "Indian work" are the movies which I mentioned. To my knowledge, "Vanaprastham" is not even mentioned anywhere outside India as say "Bandit Queen", "Kama sutra" or "Fire". Adoor's latest movie is hardly known even to Indians except its shown in France. In the London film festival its not even there. But fortunately, there is one another good movie which is listed (Chokher Bali).
The point is ... unfortunately wrong movies are projected as "Indian movies" in the international arena and setting wrong examples. So new directors ape sensationalism rather than concentrate on subject and nativity.
I dont think MR has made alot of movies which belong to elite category, he has lately made some great and enjoyable movies.
Hopefully in the future right movies are projected.

Vatsa,
I agree with you!
Yes! We are remembered more for our Fire, Kama Sutra, Bandit Queen than for our Kannathil Muthamittal, Nizhal Kuthu, Vanaprastham.
But you guys have to realise that with talents like Balu Mehendra, MR, Mahendran, Shaji N Karun, Ketan Mehta, Rituporna Ghosh we(Indians) can come up with great work w/out any poverty depiction, navel-exposing heroines, duet scenes, kamal-style actress enjoying scenes.
It is a disgrace to Kamal even after having a daughter who is in marriage this guy whould put loads of make up and enoy people like Kiran in Anbe Sivam
This is what angeres me a lot! If you say you are making a different movie make it logical I dont want to see a 55 year old perattifying a young woman who shamelessly shows of her assets.
Vatsa,
What about Satyajit Ray's Charulatha? It is quite well-known here in America. "Vanaprastham" is pretty popular, ofcourse not amongst the yuppie youngsters of UK and America, but among discerning critics who use their BRAINS when watching cinema.
Thats the reason I support and hail movies like Kammathil Muthamittal and Pithamagan! ofcourse in pithamagan Laila falling for a Rowdy is inexcusable fault on Bala's fault.
Can anyone tell me why there are not any dark keroines in Tamil cinema (atleast onscreen) we have very very ordinary uncouth looking people like Vijay and Danush, but why not a actress who looks like a maid-servant??
I have no qualms about people like Vijay and Danush acting as heroes. but let us make it more interesting. Vijay acting like a Mechanis is Ok with me. But why not have a love story with a dark looking loical tamil heroine who acts as a maid servant opposite to Vijay's mechanic.
It is absolutely illogical to expect Jothika as a rich girl in Tirumalai fall in love with Vijay as a MEchanic! Ok atleast paint Jothika black and make her act as a normal girl(not rich one) if Vijay thinks it is Gourava Kuraichal to act with anybody dark!

Vatsa,
Did you see what happened to Kannathil Muthamittal in SFO film festival. Huge applauses! everybody was talking about 'A peck on the cheek'. This movie was the most successful Tamil film in america to impact American audience. thats why I think a Marketing-avvy and intelligent MR is our only hope to showcase our Tamil movies in the world!
Heard MR is helping Bala to Showcase Pithamagan around the world
