R Sundar, while you have sung three songs which I was sure you would sing: Ettil ezhuthi vaithen, Mella mella arugil vandhu and Iraivan irukkindraana, one song which I expected was 'Vaarathiruppaano' from Pachchai Vilakku. I just love that song!
Who sang along with you, especially Malarndhum malaraadha and also the haunting humming in Ettil ezhuthi vaithen?
What were the highlights of our Ilatchiya Nadigar's speech?

Generally songs which appeal to rasikas like you and me may not appeal to others.They dont understand the nuances of the composition and would reject as unpopular song. This Vaarathiruppano is one such wonderful song which did not get the due recognition. Even this Mella mella I just inserted. The lady who sang with me was not upto mark but of course not bad. SSR did not make an impressive speech-he was just telling his Kannadasan connections and some Vanambadi experiences. I was happy because I could meet MD TKP, the man behind Mella mella and Ettil ... I asked him about Ullasappayanam and Ponnithirunaal songs. As expected he could not tell much and had forgotten those days. Pity.

R Sundar, thanks for your reply. Too bad TKP doesn't remember Ullasappayanam and Ponnithirunaal. I guessed SSR would talk about Vaanampaadi. Did he say anything about his experiences reg. another of Kavignar's productions in which he played the hero- Sivagangai seemai? What do you feel about the classic Kanavu kanden (TMS- TS Baghavathi) and the haunting Thendral vandhu veesaatho (S Varalakshmi-TS Baghavathi)?

SSR did make some reference to S.Seemai but did not elaborate. What do you expect me to say about Kanavu kanden and thendral vandhu... the former in raga Mukhari is an aural treat. Never heard before that a romantic duet inthis raga. Thendral vandhu veesatho is a usual MSV/TKR pathos.

One of the good "jive" number as called by the Ball Room Dancing Community (if anyone familiar with Ball Room Dancing/Latin Jazz Dancing Techniques) was rendered by Asha Bhosle in the Hindi Movie "Aasha" ( I was very ignorant, thought, it was named after her all these years)and composed by Chitalkar Ramachandra. Lyrics were by Rajinder Krishan and goes by "Ina Mina Dika". A great "jive" note which was immensely popular in the late 50s. I wish Kimberly Mitchell (my favorite Ballroom Dancer for the last few years) could dance to that note in one of the Ballroom Dancing Championships. The same song was dubbed in tamil for the movie "Adisaya Penn". You would'nt win a lottery for guessing it right. It was by TFM Icon P Susheela. Literature tells us that many in the south thought the same song was by north indian legend Asha Bhosle. I could recall that PS lamented,in one of her audience with the press, that she was offered many a in-house assignments with "Filmistan Studios" (SD Burman Saheb was their corporate house composer forgive me if I got the name of the studio wrong) but was her focus was too narrow or she was not well equipped to make those business decisons at an early age. Listening to both the "jive " versions, I could hardly tell the difference myself. The composition itself per se, had 1940's traditional jazz orchestra influences (Glen Miller/Benny Goodman/Cab Calloway/Harry James/Sammy Kaye/Artie Shaw) on Chitalkar Ramachandra. Though the composition was original in Hindi, it was dubbed in tamil for the aforementioned movie by KVM (or was it by Chitalkar again). The song deserves a special mention (for the sake of P Susheela) after it was overshadowed by a north indian contemporary.

Film historian/writer Vamanan in his book Thirai isai alaigal vol II when profiling on R.Balasaraswathy refers to a name N.Saravanan(page 91) thanking him for having supplied the writer RBS songs. Is that you? Curious.

Yes, that N Saravanan is yours truly. Vamanan is a very simple, unassuming person. He has great affection for me and unfailingly mentions me, whenever I have been able to assist him with some inputs. We keep in touch thru e mail and telephone. I always meet him whenever I go to India, and we have spent many happy afternoons listening to/discussing old songs.

In the Kannadasan prog. I mentioned some time back I met Vamanan also. We were all honoured on stage that day. He spoke eloquent about my singing TMS songs that day. I am grateful to him.

Nice to see you in this page also. Our friend Nagarajan cites a song without even having a basic idea of Mukhari raga and he wrongly mentions the name (or deliberatley?) as kukhari. Which serious music lover will tolerate this?

The Rennaisance Period of TFM (1958-1968)
P Susheela is one of the most celebrated artists of our times and has sung a widely varied repertoire with all the major composers. She is a "Jessye Norman (the great american singer)" of Tamil Film Music.
The film "Karnan" has always had a high profile. Not because it was by BR Pantulu's production company, but for its vindicatory memoirs and nostalgic souvenirs of a golden era of TFM playback. Meanwhile, another tradition of northern style has flourished side by side with it. While slaughter aand mayhem adorned the stage after the collapse of the film "Karnan", the music itself had emotional naunces to it and represented the attachment of ordinary folks. But neither house recognized the genius of P Susheela. The songs were full of new fluidity in the way of composition, arias, choruses and recitatives which were intermingled. Even the movie's partial sucess was obviously due to the arias, singing style of the soprano, choruses and relevant to the storyline, provided some consolation to the citizens. It brings back memories of French opera by Jules Massenet, Donizetti, Offenbach, Charpentier and Charles Gounod.
The songs by P Susheela are particularly effective in its schizophrenic changes of mood and shows her extraordinary ability to make something out of almost nothing. The song "Ennuir Thozhie" has seductive appeal and is cleverly married to well orchestrated and tuneful music.
P Susheela has worked with host of acclaimed composers from G Ramanathan/K V Mahadevan/ SM Subbiah Naidu/Viswanathan Ramamurthy in the south and Naushad Ali/Chitalkar Ramachandra in the north, her interest in rennaisance music has led to collaboration with many of the early music ensembles in particular Viswanathan/Ramamurthy. The song "Kangal Enge" from the mentioned movie stands testament to the same. I was very fortunate enough to receive the same in a mp3 format from "P Susheela Fans Group", a dedicated band of fans and enthusiasts.
Those were the days when music and poetry were partners, and recreated this alliance by alternating recitative and aria, thus bringing to life characters whose sensibilities take on a universal quality, in which the listener can find elements of his own experience. These were reproduced in the movie and shares with the same emotional intensity in the act of writing/composing of Kannadasan/VR, thus disclosing the existence of a purely metaphysical truth to which to inspire.
The richness in Kannadasan's writing also proved an endless stimulus and source of inspiration for the rennaisance composers, who emnjoyed exploiting all the descriptive possibilities of the supreme voice of P Susheela.
Composer Christoph Willibald Gluck once remarked (in preface to the printed edition of ALCESTE, 1769) "Your highness.....I have made every effort to restore music to its true role of serving the poetry by means of its powers of expression......".
In the mentioned movie VR and their mezzo P Susheela created a personal synthesis from the different forms, styles and traditional idioms they encountered and quickly established themselves through the dramatic power of their composition and the raw voice of the mezzo, in which expressive urgency is unquestionably the dominant aspect.
I found the young woman (PS) is in a torment and suddenly in a position which seems to allow her no means of escape other than to deliver the song the way it was meant to be a expressive emphasis not present in Kannadasan's text allowing her to immediately unleash all the pent-up energy in the the song "Kangal Enge".
You cannot hear her (PS) grasping for breath and they all lead recurrently to the howl of grief represented by the accented quevers for all the strings, and reinforced percussion and wind instruments. Th result is a continual alteration of emotions which finds a brief moment of repite in the central sections of the composition (for percussion).
If we accept that the music's essence is melody and the poetry that accompanies that, it becomes easy to see the comnnection between Kannadasan/ VR and P Susheela.
