Ragapravaham Sundar, thanks foe the clarification about Sarojini not being Jikki's sister. I too found Sivasubramanian's claim hard to believe. But are you sure that MS Sarojini who sang in the 40s and the Sarojini who sang in MPM are one and the same? Their voices sound so different?
Kik, let me add to your recollection of Tenaliraman songs. Among my eternal favourites is the Ravvu Balasaraswathi number - 'Thangam pongum meni undhan sondham ini'- an unusual song for RB, who was usually given lullabies or pathos songs.
This seems to be a dance song and Balasaraswathi has really let go- simply scintillating!
Again I remember a PS song too in Tenaliraman, from Jaidev's Geetagovind, with Sanskrit words- 'Haririga muktha'(?)- Maybe Ragapravaham Sundar will be able to tell more.

Dear Saravanan, Your taste for golden oldies is really amazing. Coming to Thangam pongum meni...by RBDevi,a wonderful soul-stirring melody from msv-tkr duo. The manner in which the song has been sung is splendid. I knew the song only from my close friend M.Surveswaran (Secretary of Vintage Heritage-about him, later). The song is based on Hindustani raga Shudd Sarang, a rarely applied raga those days. Keen observers of film songs could find the similarity between this song and Iravum nilavum...of Karnan.
Dear Kik, Ullasam thedum.. is one more excellent piece from Tenaliraman. Based on Sindhu bhairavi raga, this song reminds us of Adi Narayana Rao's Anarkali piece, Kaninda alliyodu nilavin oli nee...how is it?

1. I don't know M.S.Sarojini of 40s (and 50s?), but theres one R.Sarojini (a.k.a. uDataa sarOjini, udata= squirrel in Telugu, I don't know how she got this 'prefix'. Probably through one of her children's songs?!) in Telugu, often giving voice to child artists. For e.g. the childrens number in Devadasu (1953). She was quite popular and active (at least in Telugu) till into early 60s.
2. Probably I am confused. Isn't there a singer by name: M.S Rajeswari, known for her classical music singing skills?
3. Is it possible to get the complete track of Sivaji's "Tenali Raman" (1955). On exchange basis or whatever .... I can provide you the complete Telugu track in return. It has a great sound track. Apart from the already mentioned and rightly praised numbers from Bhanumati, RBS (btw, is it really based on "Suddha Saaranga"?), Suseela (Jayadeva's ashTapadi: chandana charchita ....) there are wonderful "chaaTu" (*)poems rendered by Ghantasala. As you know Telugu literary tradition attributes many chaaTu-s to Tenali Raman. I am curious to know if these verses were somehow part of the Tamil version too. Then theres another chaaTu verse rendered by
that great vocalist: late Voleti Venkateswarlu, which goes like: #vara bimbaadharamulun payOdharamulun ....#. Theres also a god Ghantasala-Chittoor V. Naagayya duet, a socalled 'comic' song.
Regards,
Sreenivas
P.S. re: whats a "chaaTu" poem, please see the excellant monograph by Profs. V. Narayanarao and David Shulman: "A poem at the right moment", 1999, OUP (India), Univ. of California Press, Berkley (in USA).

Addendum (re: Tenali Raman-1956) This film features an "annamayya" composition: icchakaalu naaku neeku inka Elaraa! .... Its the first film in which an Annamayya composition was used. Well, strictly speaking C. Pullayya's "dhruva-anasuya" (1936, starring ONLY child artists!) had "jO achyutaananda jOjO mukundaa". However the makers of the film didn't know, at that time, that as Annamayya's work. It has become a part of the tradition and considered to be a traditional lullaby.

Hello dear friends,
I am Narayanan writing from stuttgart, Germany, and completely new to the forum and its members. Any way, as you all are, I am a 'Rasigan' of old tamil film songs and have a good collection of tamil mp3s. I am looking for this particular song "KaNNum kaNNum pesiyadhu Unnalandro" from the film Kairasi. If any of you have this song as mp3 or audiostream (listening), please write to me.
Mikka Nandri!

a.a., saravanan, thanks for info on the song - "pengalaik kandadhum sadha". What does "ludha" mean? I havent heard that word before in my life.
About the song "Ullasam Thedum Ellorum Povar" in Thenali Raman - this song is featured in the MSV-TKR golden collection - a set of 5 cassettes. In the movie, this is the song Thenali Raman sings before Babar.
Sreenivas: M.S. Rajeswari was well known for her ability to sound like a kid. Many of her "kid" songs - including "Poopoova Parandhu Pogum Pattuppoocchi Akka", "Kua Kua Pappa" etc. were very popular.

Saravanan,
I would like to open a fresh page exclusively to discuss the tamil film music of 1930s,40s and 50s only. All classical gems. I can bring some experts and authorities to this page for a nice chat. CAn you pls help me?

Sundar: It is very easy to open a new thread. Just go to the previous page (where all the threads are listed) and enter a new subject (like 'old songs' for this thread). Your query is the description of what the subject is all about and then the usual name and email fields. When you post a new thread is created.
I'd recommend focusing on the 30s and 40s or the 50s - i.e., don't combine them. BTW, do we need a new thread given that this thread is for old songs?

Dear Kik,
Your point is right. If you call old, even a song which is 10 years old or 5 years old will be classified under that. What I meant was vintage classics - 1931-1960.

Dear Mr.Saravanan and Dear Mr.K.Sundar your discussion on two important songs in Thenaliraman is very interesting. The first song Thangam Pongum Meni is extremely good and at par with any good classical hindustani song. Also the other song Chandana Chachida Neela Galebara.... ( a Jeyadeva's ashtapathi ) has been excellently rendered by P.Susila in Raga Mohanam. I would call it the very best of P.Susila. But most unfortunate thing is that both these two song scenes have been deleted in the latest release print of the film and so the video which has been made from this print is also missing the two best song scenes. There is yet another number of P.Susila in Thenaliraman... "Thennavar thainadu" a song praising the cultural richness of south India during the regime of Krishnadeva Raya period. But I don't remember to have seen any scene with that song in the film. May be they intended to include the song.. but due to some reason have omitted to use it. I hope to join the string of K.Sundar in later editions.

Dear Sundar: How about posting the details of the Tenaliraaman screening? Did it go well? What were the audience's comments? Were the two songs Surveswaran mentions in the print or not?
On the vintage classics thread - we are still looking at 30 years which is a bit too much? Or, if you are going to lead the discussion you may perhaps have a theme or chronological approach to framing the discussion? My perception is opening the door 30 years wide without some focus will not lead to quality discussion.
