Saravanan, you are right, that song is by MLV. Beginning of that song is also with some other lines. I should look up my collection to get the correct lines. But I vaguely remember the scene when Lalita travels in a car when this song plays in the background

The other solo by MLV in Kannin Manigal is probably the same one I mentioned. It begins like a lullaby ""aararo, aariro, asai kan maniyae,
Anbin dheepamithey, kurudaai anaivadho kaatriniley, chinnanjiru padagey vellam ....aatriniley......nalla veenai idhey, manniley nalam keda erivaayo......""

Saravanan/Kathiresan: There's another nostalgic song which I had to account for from my memory. I had to reminisce this particular song after going through my good old collection. It goes by "Iru Kathalar..." sung by our own "Isai Medai" GRamanthan. The female voice in the track does resemble both MLVasanthakumari and Ravvu Balasaraswathi....but I am not sure which one of them renedered the voice in that track. Its one of those rare pieces which you never hear like singers Devnarayanan and Sarkar. They used to play in AIR in those days. Need help with movie and the femnale singer?

Vicky
Perhaps you are referring to the song by CR Subbaraman and MLV in Manamagal. That begins with "Iru Kathalar Magizhnthey Kondadum Urave Perananatham"

Coming back to my discussion on Ravvu Balasraswathi, she rendered playback to Anjali Devi who was cast as an heroine for the telugu movie "Swapna Sundari" (1950)directed by Ghantasala Balramiah. The movie also had Garikapatti Varalakshmi (G Varalakshmi), and both of them in their primetime of their movie careers gave a scintilating performance, especially in the dance sequences. It seems that Balasaraswathi rendered most of the songs only after ANR had requested her husband to let her do the playback. I had to mention couple of songs which comes to my mind and both are by Balasarawathi. "Nee Natanalu Telusunule....Ohh Sogasari". Composed by the legendary CRSubburaman, the song (in fact a dance)was on a heavier/faster note with the perfect blend of the "horn" section and perscussion. Her voice and the accompanying music were in perfect harmony and cruises like a jet stream over atmospheric clouds. Indeed the song was one of the many innovations that CRS introduced to film music. The character and the texture of the song is so awesome, that you could feel listening to it. The composition, uses changing tonalities to a great effect and closes like a beginning of an overture. This song was immensely popular, that its style, mood and structure can still be appreciated today. The other one is "Ninne Valache Konara Tolivalapu..." More on Balasraswathi..to be contd.....

Mani, are you sure that the male voice in Iru Kaathalar is CRS? I seem to remember it as VN Sundaram.
Vicky, great going on RB. Did you know that she has also acted in some films? She had an amazing voice and has given so many superb songs in tamil. Its sad that she is all but forgotten now.

1. Suseela's debut was in kannatalli (1953, MD: PenDyaala Nageswara Rao). Soon after that she signed a contarct with AVM Studios and very little was heard of her for ca. 18 months. Yes, she sang that WONDERFUL number "sundaraanga maruvagalEraa" in "sangham" (1954 Tamil: peNN). Its again Pendyaala who gave her big break with "dongaraamuDu" (1955, Starring ANR, Savitri et al), esp. her "anuraagamu virisEnaa O rEraajaa!" would get into anyone's Top 10 list of hers.
2. Could someone please tell me more about the films (starring, brief story line ....) about those 2 films featuring TA Moti and RBS songs. I am wondering what their Telugu versions 'd be.
3. How many songs did CRS sing in tamil? I am aware of 2 in Telugu, from "peLLi kooturu" (1951, a remake from N.S. Krishnan's Tamil production starring Lalita.) One is a great duet with MLV: "virajaajula valapE sampenga valapE". The other is "paapulalO kaDupaapi".
4. what is this film with two MDs: AddEpalli Ramarao and Hemantkumar? Addepalli didn't do all many films in Telugu. And that after 1954!
5. Is "thayi ullam" by chance based on Samuel Butler's _The way of all flesh_?
Thanks and Regards,
Sreenivas

Sreenivas:PS did sing in the telugu movie "Bangaru Paapa" in 1954, during the time "Sangham" was released. The movie was directed by B.N. Reddy and had Addepalli Rama Rao as its Composer. It was a pathos "Vennala Velalu" with PS's voice little heavier at times. Guess Sowcar Janaki and SV Ranagarao were in the lead role. After "Donga Ramudu", she had made quite an impression (1955-1957) in "Ilavelupu" (Composer Susarla Dakshinammorthy); "Bhagyarekha" (Composer Pendyala).
PS emerged as a mezzo in tamil from KKK (Kanavanae KanKanda Theivam, a Gemini Ganesan/Anjali Devi/Lalita/MN Nambiar and was produced by Narayanan&Co. Actually Narayanan & Co was a spin-off from Pakshiraaja Films. The composers were Adepalli Ramarao and Hemanth Kumar.
As I mentioned in my previous piece on R Balasaraswathi, I have seen the movie "Thai Ullam", but, to be quite honest, I vaguely remember the storyline (saw it 25 years back). The plot is triangular between RS Manohar, M V Rajamma and their Kid... May be Mani or Saravanan can throw some light......
"Pelli Kooturu" was a telugu remake of NSK Films "Manamagal". ""Virajaajula Valape Sampenga Valape" sung by CRS/MLV was "Iru Kathalar Maghizndu Kondadum Urave..Annadam" in tamil.

Were can I get an MP3 of the song "Pyaaree Nimmal mele Nam ki majah". It is in the movie thookku thooki
G. Ramanathan music director. Balaiah as Sethji and I think Ragini sing together. Think it is set in Kapi and woman has some nice ananda bhairavi. The first part of the song has a bunch of hindi phrase like "naam ke vaasthey nahi prem hi meri. Sethji pannraan kushi!"

Sivasubramanian, yes I have heard the song'Ullathile'- lovely song. I think it is from'Moondru Pengal'-by TAM and Sarojini. BTW, I never knew Sarojini was Jikki's sister. Is she the same Sarojini who sang with PBS the duet'Ondru serndha anbu maaruma'(Makkalai petra maharasi)?
Baba120, yes'Pyaari nimmal' is an excellent song by VN Sundaram and MS Rajeswari. I don't know whether its available on MP3, though.

dear saravanan, M.S. Sarojini, who sang Ondru serndha anbu... with PBS in M P M (KVM) is definitely not jikki`s sister. Sarojini is also a singing star who sang the Shanmukhapriya raga classic Saravanabhava ennum ... in Parijatham (music CRS). Also heard the song Ennai vittodatheda sung by Sarojini in Jagathalaprathaban (G.R) in Mohanam? Unique mohanam piece. Response please.

Pyaaree Nimmal - the actress is Lalita the eldest sister. Ragini appears as Padmini's companion.
Ragapravaham Sundar - Tenali Raman has great songs, but I recall only a few
- there's a nice title/first song, a devotional by P Leela featuring Jamuna
- Bhanumathi's songs: one before the Sultans of Bijapur, Golconda,... and a bharathanatyam song before NTR
- ullaasam thEdum ellOrum Or naaL sollaamal pOvaar allaavidam (Ghantasala for Sivaji)
How about listing the rest once you've seen the movie or better still give us a commentary of the whole event.
Why's this a rare movie? And a classic at that? Just curious.
