its difficult to find transparency in filmworld. nothing is in organized and auditable fashion there. the truth is never out. only pointers.
GV's sad demise will also go as one such thing.
http://www.tamilcinema.com/cinenews2.asp?fname=Gv.html
the article says that he might receive a favourable verdict in the michael jackson case. could have waited a little longer.
the grief is still there. and also the concern that it should not happen to others.

Even before ARR's advent, GV was explcitly asking kOdambaakkam to go to newer MDs. He was suggesting, and quite fairly, that IR is overloaded and the industry should not depend on one single man for music. This was the beginning of the current trend in kOdambaakkam, where there are NO stars: actors, actresses, MDs, singers, directors all included.
GV certainly needs to be praised for his attempts to reduce monopoly.
Coming to status of kOdambaakkam. This is a translation of a question-answer in kumudham from sometime in 1998.
Q: Why do people prefer VCDs over the cinema halls?
A: You pay 50 bucks and go to a cinema hall. All seats are torn, all walls are reddened with pan parag, all toilets stink with overflowing urine (I personally think this is the biggest reason why no self respecting person goes to movies these days), no a/c in spite of tax..... After all this, if one movie is hit, there are 100s made with the same story..... Why should we go to movies?

OISG, very valid points. my thoughts:
5. Bringing in digital tech : how do you think that will stop piracy? "thirudane thirundha vittal thiruttai ozhikka mudiyaadhu". and as doubter says, the VCD watchers are not the only cause for this thiruttu. the issue is not easy to solve, it has all shades of grey and not just B&W. such things take years & a gradual change in the people's hearts to have a perceptible change.
9, 10: keeping a ceiling & a financial fallback for the producers: as long as these producers want to make ash out of their money, there is nothing that can be done. unfortunately, there will be a few GVs for the others to realize and turn away and think about the repercussions. the market forces will just churn, churn & churn, until it becomes obvious that the quick-buck-mOgam is lunacy.

1. It is very SAD to see such an end for GV. During 1990, I think, I saw him in a 'Cultural Program' in Stanley Medical College. The other guests were Viyakumar and Manjula Vijayakumar. That was the time when AGNI NATCHATHIRAM was a hit. When GV came to speak, he started with 'Raaja, Raajathi Raajan indha Raajaa'. The crowd went totally excited and we all shouted with joy. Then he continued, 'I wish you all to have a life like a Raaja (king) in future'. He was very decent with a soft smile. It is really shocking to realize that how fate forced a man of his education, quality to take such a drastic action. May he Rest In Peace and here are my condolences for his family.
2. Looks like most of you who posted messages in this thread became too emotional and started calling the 'high paid' actors as craps etc. My question to you guys is, what happened to your sense of individual rights and freedom?
3. In India, with the vibrant freedom being the base for its system, anybody can demand any salary. If Vaiyapuri wants, he can demand Rs50 Crores. Isn't that his right?
4. However a sensible producer will say NO to that. That is his right. He does not have any right to complain about Vaiyapuri. THIS IS OUR BASIC SYSTEM. If I want to make a movie and approach Vijay and if he asks 10 Crores, then it is upto me to decide whether it is worth or not. If I want I can just borrow from 'Kandhu Vatti' guys and invest that 10 crores. But if I loose I should not even think of calling 'Vijay a Crap'. It is all my fault. Going to Kandhu Vatti is my fault. Making a movie beyond my capacity is my fault. Investing 10 crores on a actor is my fault. Most importantly not concentrating on the story is my fault. I cannot blame any actors for my fault.
5. However if Vijay settles for one amount in the begining and during the project demands another, then that is wrong. During my brief interaction with this industry, I found this happens a lot(I am not talking about VIJAY now). Becase most of the things go by 'vocal commitment'. No written contracts. Nothing.
6. Again, a sensible producer will and should take care of all these things. Otherwise there is no point in crying. It is your money for God's sake and you 've got to be careful.

Some things to think about:
Anbe Sivam and Julie Ganapathy were flops while Dhool and Dhum are hits. For all the gripe here, Silambarasan managed to give the only hit of tamil new year's films.
The producers are the ones who pay the actors astronomical sums, instead of giving low budget high quality films. They are the ones who accept below-par stories and bank on a few song sequences to make their money.
Stopping piracy will be difficult and people just won't spend hundreds of rupees for watching movies in theaters. Any free alternative will be lapped up. Just wait till the producers turn their attention on the new growth of FM stations, which will hurt audio sales.

Heavy attempts are going on to promote Chimbu. His first movie was a resounding flop and the second one was a moderate hit after heavy publicity. You are right, the producers are to blame. But you cannot blame them completely either because Julie Ganapathy and Anbe Sivam were flops. So they are just playing it safe. Can you imagine someone making a movie like Sindhubhairavi these days? Something has to be done to push the audience in the age group 30-50 to the theaters if moviemakers are to make movies for the mature audience. I dont see that happening as long as this audience get everything they want from Sat TV and pirated VCDs.
The bottomline is the audience makeup. Even hits like Sethu, Kaadhalukku Mariyadhai, Vaali, Minnale etc. were all targetted towards the college youngsters only.
What I am saying apply mostly to A centers. In rural areas movies like "Sokkathangam" or "some-Amman" will continue to make decent business.
In fact someone like Ramanarayanan will never be in a position to commit suicide :-)

Guys one more point to be noted is that most of the filem viewing public (i.e read as theatre going ) are largely lower middle class to the poor. Now if the theatres which do not have a clamp on the amount of money they can charge for a movie ask for exorbitant amounts like 100 Rs for a show then who do you think has the money in this segment to pay. They obviously go for the much cheaper entertainment which they can get for the same amount all through the year via cable TV. Its hight time that the producers think about getting the films reach more of the segment from where they get most money.
Second of the people who can pay they dont go in there because of the facilities, most of the distributors themselves are theatre owners and they fight to get the movie to thier houses. So there is a monopoly there and the rest have to toe the line of the biggest distributor. Instead I would second the thought of movie studios which sell the movies to not just one or few distributors but to all and a fixed price that is not decided by the distributors or the producers but more by dealing.

Guys,
Poor GV. I think a system should come to fix minimum fixed salary for actors + % of profit in the movie.
I think it should be done for all highly paid technicians. This will do two good things. Will not force any producer to go this kind of decision. Will improve the involvement of all important technicians in success of a movie.

I agree with bb partially.. Its the producer who invests the money... He knows ahead of time that this hero will cost him X amount of money.. If he cannot afford this hero, his option is to go to another hero.. If he cannot produce hits with this other hero, then he doesnt know to choose the technicians involved for that movie or he is not fit for the industry... TR is famous for marketing his own movies and he continues this for Chimbu... His 'En thangai kalyani' ran in theatres for 175 days with empty theatres... For a lay man who reads dhina thanthi, the big ad for Dhum will be the most attractive one whereas the smaller ad for 'Anbe Sivam' goes unnoticed.... One day this same TR/Simbu will burn their own hands when they run out of ideas/money/producer.. Remember when Vijay came all his movies were directed by his father and produced by his mother.. It took a while for people to accept him... Let's see how long simbu stays in the market... BTW, where are talented actors like Vineeth? It took Vikram 10 long years to be recognised in Sethu... If the index finger in GV's suicide points to the Actors demanding huge sums of money, the other three fingers points back at the producers who sign those actors by paying that huge sum of money...

This is indeed very sad. G.V. was indeed a great producer. On another note, though, I totally agree with you guys on how this piracy problem should be fixed. I also agree with how the actors back in the 70's thru the 80's and early 90s were great actors. I mean you had Kamal, Rajini, Karthik, Mohan, Arjun (who is awful now), Raghuvaran, etc.,. Look at the losers we have to look at and deal with today. Vijay, Madhavan, Surya, Ajith, Chimbu (I hate this guy so much), and Prashanth should take an early retirement. All of them are so awful it's not even funny any more. Someone has to do something about the horrible state that tamil cinema is in.
