  Sindhuja, someone (maybe satsona?) mentioned that R4 was "pure filtered Kapi" so I started following on it. The concept of "thaat" is an attempt to categorize ragas in order to trace it's origins and explore inter-relationships. There are 10 thaats. More here:

  It is not as rigorous as the melakartha system. The Hindustani raga, Kafi, is supposed to be similar to Karaharapriya:

  Rajaraman,
  Theoretically there is no reason why pratimadhyama ragas are lesser in number than in suddha madhyama. Mathematically you can match every SM raga by PM raga by just doing a swara bhedam on M1 -> M2 (except of course where we have both m in a raga)
  
  Practically, yes there is a probable explanation. SM has a definite sruti ratio called "4/3" which is pleasing to the ear. But PM doesnt have such a "fixed" value. It somewhere lies within SM and P. It is calculated by doing sruti bheda and not got by aesthetic pleasure (like Sadharana Gandhara for eg). This could be one of the reason why PM is not so popular which leads to lesser number of ragas.

  heard IVAN in Raajangahm today...from what I figured out....Ennai enna is Simmendra Madhyamam,
  Enakkinai yaar inge is MMG and Kannan nee en isai is Sriranjani....Ulagame had traces of Sindhu Bairavi(although not clear)...I strongly feel that appadi paakirathellam vEnam has a Shankarabaranam base(may be kEdaram...but wait a min....there is some ShruthibEdam funda in that song I guess...so I'll be better off If I leave the Madai Pichufying to the experts)....It was realy great to hear such real heavy classical stuff after a longtime

  By just superficial hearing, 1 st one could be Sudhasaveri (raga's similarities go with devaghandari & aarabi) and second might be sudhhadhanyasi[ with more abheri chaayal to my ears :-) ]. "maanjolai" sounds similar to "kavidhai arangerum".

  Ram, yes one song of IVAN is SMM. Seems Sudha gave a statement that her first film song is based on the same raga (Simmendramadhyamam) as her Guru MLV's first song! Have to hear the other one

  Someone has suggested that Sindhuja is not writing anymore coz she's angry that no one talks about sruthi bedham any more ... that same someone also suggested I should email more of my Tamil poems to those former regulars missing in action if they continue to abscond from the site :)
