I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!
VaniJairam.com - A site that has lots of info and songs of VJ.

Never mistake eagerness for annoyance :-)
As I'd mentioned a few months ago, I was planning a visit to India around this time (exactly this week) but now that has been indefinitely postponed. Not that you are a proxy, but even if I assumed that for a moment...you are the person (besides Neel D) I would have liked to send in my place to meet VJ. For a moment I thought of asking you to pose all the interview questions I had compiled (from other posters) for the November moment. However, I have no doubt, that your meeting was way beyond any elementary interview. Hence, the "thavippu" to hear how it all went!
I am so glad to hear that it was a meeting filled with grace and good vibes. Please give us a lengthy narrative of your long chat with VJ. How's one instalment per week sound? (about 100o words each time? :-)) Suresh's take on the meeting would also be nice to hear. I hope he pipes up soon - and gives us his own version of the encounter.
Take good care of yourself. And thanks for starting it off...
From thavippu to thiththippu in one fell stroke! :-)

Saravanan
I am writing this right after reading your teaser and leaving an emotional sigh! You are the most deserving of most of us here to have met her. You didn't think your chronology would have come upto 200 pages? And that's not even half of it yet! How sweet of her to ask you not to make any other appointments in order that she have a long chat!! Now, if only I could meet her..............!!!
Even if this sounds like an order, please post the rest of the stuff as soon as you can and divide it if you like into small portions but I cannot (read will not) stand any more delays in this particular write-up, not at all:-)
Naaz: One instalment per week? Oh, no, no, don't give him such ideas - atleast one small instalment every other day is recommended. This little piece he wrote was one of the best teasers I have ever seen in print!

Naaz, neel ,saravanan, my namesake et al!
Vani is lucky to have such die hard followers as you! It is the quality which counts not the quantity!!
Can I get my hands on the 200 page book I wonder! It is a pain scrolling up & down.

The quantity vs. quality aspect is also (or, so I'd like to think) reflected in the committed posts and musings of all participants in this thread. A Distinct Society celebrating a Singer of Great Distinction. I like the sound of that too :-)
Sriram -
I've always believed that Saravanan's VJ chronology is worthy of - and ought to be - published. It is both creative and comprehensive, and is a perfect annotated guide to the singer's TFM contribution.
I was tempted to suggest that newtfmpage should bring this out as a book...but, a Vanathi or Kalaimagal could also do well with such a fine work.

Naaz, but when? time is the biggest constraint..hope Sara finds time to recap more & more - the '78 summary alone had 14 instalments, and still a lot more to go.
The material on this thread upto May 2003 took up over 1000 pages on MS Word. It will surely be a collector's album once the chronology gets complete.

I am at best an associate member of the Distinct society but the name makes me wish i were a distinguished fellow!
I am more in the PS band wagon ;-) but I'll once agin repeat VJ is lucky to have such Kodi thookigal ( flag bearers thaanppa!) as opposed to goojas.

Meeting Greatness- Part 2
VJ stays in an Apartment Complex called ‘Heritage’, in Nungambakkam. Suresh and I were so engrossed, as usual, in our conversation, that we didn’t remember until we were halfway in Nungambakkam High Road, (or Uthamar Gandhi Salai, as it is called these days), that we had forgotten all about the bouquet! Suresh assured me that there was bound to be some florist in Haddows Road.
But we couldn’t find any, perhaps there were closed at that time—after all, most of Chennai sleeps in a weekend afternoon. But our search for a florist took us past a place called ‘Marmalade’, and we cheered up and changed our objective from a bouquet to pastries! Marmalade is a quaint little joint, tucked cunningly away from the road. And we were delighted when we noticed that it had a florist too. Suresh gave the flowers exhibited there a searching scrutiny—‘ a bouquet wholly of white roses, please’- he was very particular. And as they were making up the bouquet, we ventured inside the pastry shop. Oh, what mouth-watering varieties of rich, creamy pastries, so tantalizingly displayed! We ordered a good assortment to be made up.
I had just partaken of a heavy lunch at home, so all I could do was look at them wistfully. Suresh, however, had no such qualms—he was soon attacking a giant-size burger with obvious relish. “I didn’t have any lunch,” he claimed (and which claim, may I add (rather maliciously) I didn’t buy at all- if you had a look at his—er—healthy figure, you’ll know why!)
And as Suresh was too busy to entertain any conversation from me (however scintillating it may be), I turned my musings towards our visit to VJ’s house. My thoughts turned to Vairamuthu’s reminiscences on visiting VJ in his ‘En Jannalin u VazhiyE’. He had titled it, so aptly, as ‘ Kuyilin kootil konjaneram’.
“Andha varaverpparaiyin amaithi sumandha azhagu, veiyilOdu azhaithuvandha vandha veppathaiyellaam veLiyE anuppividugiradhu.
VirudhugaLai ellaam kaNNaadichuvargaLukkuL adukki vaithirukkum azhagu—
Thanadhu kalaiyulaga vaazhkkaiyai thodangi vaiththa Amarar Vasant Desaiyin padathirkku maalaiyittu vaithirukkum maaNbu—
Suvaril vazhiyum varNakkalaivagaLaal nadhiyin thiruppaththil nagarum oru padagu—
Andha araiyengum thooimai-- angulam angulamaaga alangaram seithu vaithirukkum andha paangu—ivaiyellaam andha kodai veLaiyil manasukkuL melliya malligai kaatraai veesina.
UngaLudaiya moolap peyarukku etravaaRE veetai vaithirukkureergaL” endru viyandhu pogirEn. (Avarudaiya moolappeyar KalaivaNi)
Enadhu poi illadha pugazhchiyai avar thanadhu punnagaiyaal angeerithu koLgiraar---”
At this point, Suresh, his craving sated, disturbed the train of my thoughts, asking me if the pastry box was ready. We collected both the pastries and the bouquet, and were soon on our way again. VJ had given such explicit directions (I was to notice this precision and perfection in everything concerning her), that we had no difficulty in locating the complex. The Lift –Attendant asked “Vani Jairaama?” with a disarming smile, when we told him the floor and door number. And in no time—we were ringing the bell.

No--no-- Raghu, my thanks to Suresh were not as incoherent as all that :))
Hi all! Thanks for your warm response, am gratified that my tardiness has been condoned :)
And regarding the chronology, I have subsequently discovered few omissions in the early years, and these need to be added in those respective years to ensure a sense of completion.
1978 has just one more chapter to be written, and then it would be complete. Once that's done, I have to work to bring in those insertions. Will get on the job soon.
