I think the Malayalam award was for the song in the movie Oppol. I wonder if anyone knows a link to this song somewhere on the internet.

Pranav, Meera and Kaumudi:
A Kannada friend recommended me to listen to the following beautiful Kannada gems of Janaki. Most of them are classical songs. What a magnificent voice! A true maestro, she is for sure.

BTW, the second song has an equally alluring version by Vani Jairam in the Telugu film Pooja. This was news for me! Its nice to listen to two different executions of the same tune. But wasnt the MD of Pooja Ramesh Naidu? The music directors for the Kannada version are Rajan Nagendra. So who was inspired by whom? In fact, its a direct lift!

Pooja's composer was Rajan-Nagendra. They were very successful in Telugu for a long time and made a name for themselves in the Telugu industry. So the song was not a lift. I don't which came out first - the kannada one or the telugu one. We had an interesting discussion with Saravanan in the VJ thread on Rajan Nagendra. They gave such lilting melodies those days and were wonderful in their own way.
BTW, thanks for those links of Janaki's songs. Did you get a chance to listen to Shiva shiva ennada that Meerakrishna posted sometime back?

The last song Nambide...is not Janaki's song. I think it was sung by Pt.Bhimsen Joshi. Is there Janaki's version?

The record should be set straight. R-N duo was the most prolific as well as highest quality name in Kannada music from about 1970 to about 1985. Their Telugoo songs have been few and far between and most of the times were the remakes of some of their most famous melodies in Kannada.

Kaumudi, Yes it is BS Joshi's version, and this song is in Hindustaani, but SJ's version is carnatic, this song is based on 'Poorvi Kalyaani', beautifully rendered by SJ. And 'Poojisalende Hoogala' movie 'Eradu Kanasu' MD R-N. Kannada film comes first, becoz this is based on Novel 'Eradu Kanasu' by 'Vani'. Manjula was acted in both the version. I heard Telugu version 'Ennenno jenmla bandham needi naadi'(VJ and ?) Please excuse me if I made a mistake. Kannada version is also by VJ and PBS(my fav). And one more Novel based movie is 'Hosa Belaku', again the novelist is Vani. The song goes like 'Teredide Mane', by SJ and VJ. MD Ranga Rao.

Point twice considered! No denying that R-N had composed for 335 Kannada movies and only 35 Telugu movies. I am not taking that credit away from Kannada films, not to worry! But if you ask any Telugu music fan of the 80s, his song list will include R-N's numbers. So many of the songs of these 35 movies were hits.

MEERA:
Thanks a lot. The musicindiaonline collection for Janaki in Kannada films is awesome. A couple of pages next (in alphabetical order) is a delightful raagamalika "padmini padmalaye". In this song, Janaki sounds endearingly sweet. Another sweet song, not so much classical, is "anna ninna sodariyaana".
BTW, Meera, have you heard this song:

Equally enchanting, especially for some free-flowing phrases executed by Janaki with remarkable poise and felicity, is her duet with Bangalore Duet - "chandramukhi pranasakhi". There are nice, in fact sweet-sounding, sargam passages.
The kannada collection on MIO for Janaki is a connoisseurs delight, and will serve as a pointer to anyone who doubts Janaki's tonal quality and classical expertise. Many songs are from the 60s, and the extra sweetness of the 60s is so prominent in those songs.

Okay, last post for now....Kaumudi, if you haven't heard it, please listen to "Jai Gowri Jagdeeshwari". It is based on Hindustani Raaga Jaijaiwanti (as the site states) and has been rendered beautifully by Janaki.

Av
Thanks for that link. Yeah, the song is based on Rag Jaijaiwanti (or dwijawanthi in carnatic). It is a beautiful song by Janaki. If you think these songs sound ultimate, then wait until you listen to that Shiva shiva song uploaded by Meera in the coolgoose site. That is just out of the world.
Meera
Nambide song is so good. Thanks for the help with the link. As Av says, there are so many good Kannada songs of Janaki in MIO's list of her solos. Ahaa, what a pleasure listening to all those. I am listening Indu Yenege Govinda from Eradu Kanasu as I am writing this post.
