After reading all these biased views i thought i will also put mine :)
harikrishnan
1. agreed that Dr.KJY is undisputed king in malayalam.SPB's forte is the way he emotes in a song. And please dont get me wrong, all most 90% of malayalam music is dull melody, melody, melody, preety mush music that u can listen before u go to sleep. So there is very less scope for SPB to shine.
2.I dont think Dr.KJY deeply understands or feels a song, atleast in tamil.A singer can show a bawam only when he understands what he is singing.Of all the tamil songs in the 20,000 he has sung i cannnot even mention one song where he gave his contribution other than what the music director told.
3.Saying KJY as only singer who has done maximum justice to redition is a joke.Kannadhasan was mad at him for his redition and still KJy sings with a mallu accent after singing in tamil for so many years.Always switches over to mallu equalent words like sWargam for soorgam etc where as S.P.B has an impeccable record.During a funciton Vaali came on the stage just to say that SPB took great pains for pronouncing things correctly and he appreciates him for that.
4.Lata mangeshkar tried to stop KJy in hindi ??.maybe.But in so many stages in so many funcitons she has said that she admires SPB and she loves to sing with him.
5. S.P.B could have sung lot of dabbakunthu songs.they come under the category of fun songs.please tell me how many KJY songs are FUN songs?.IN all these so called dabbakuthu song there is LIFE,ENERGY,PASSION and HAPPINESS and a major portion of the contribution from Dr.SPB and iam not gonna talk about Dr.KJY in this area, cause u know.

Agreed that Dr.KJY has got some inimitable classical hits under his belt. But i think you should listen to more telugu songs also, the good ones.every language has bad and good songs u got to search for it.When u r talking about classical music based songs in india the first name that comes to mind is K.Vishwanath. Even though KJY has sung great songs like televaraademo for KV 80% of the songs in his movie where by SPB.forget shankarabaranam listen to shaptapathi, swathi kiranam, swarna kamalam etc.
telugu is a language made for raagas. It is one of the most pleasing language.Listen to premaledhani in Abhinandana or any melody from rajendra prasad movies. Its just a treat to listen a SPB melody in telugu.

Dear Senty (@ 128.231.88.4) May 25 15:25:07
.
Your reply to Harikrishnan:
The points 1 and 2 are sweeping remarks, which require no response.
Reg point 3 I reproduce KJY's own words on the Kannadasan incident (from KJY's chat session on Chennaionline.com on 23rd April).
Quote:
Kaviyarasan: Sir, still you feel angry on Kavignar Kannadasan who criticised on singing 'Therukkovile.. Oadi Vaa'. But he really cried hearing you singing his song 'Kanne Kalai Maane'. What is your experience with him?
Yesudas: Kaviyarasan, Kannadasan sir was not there during the recording session, but of course assitants were there and the situation was tense, nobody properly attended to my wrong pronunciation. I openly say that it was a wrong pronunciation, no anger against Kavignar at all.
Unquote:
Can a person be more open and humble than that? In pronunciation no one is 100% perfect, even SPB (of course, you will dispute this).
There is something in a singer like KJY that goes beyond the minor lapses like in pronunciation, that transcends this mortal world and passes into the devine. Howmuchever you may object, in melody and versatality departments I would give more points to KJY. I don't dispute that in those fast popular kind of songs SPB has no peer.
No hard feelings..

Incidentally, the legend has it that "Kanney kalai maane" was the last song written by Kavigner Kannadasan! Strange are the ways of fate!

Senty,
Very well said, with due respect to Dr.KJY & Dr.SPB, it is Insane to say that Dr.KJY is versatile, his singing is monotonous many times, he can not emote feelings at all, except sad songs in which he excels, but never more than Dr.SPB or Rafi in that matter, or even singers like P.Jeychandran!
Dr,KJY's attempt at 'Thani thoti thedi vantha' from sindhu bhairavi is PATHETIC!, he should stick to melody/classical/devotional that's it, Dr.SPB is incomparable, when it comes to versatility, only Rafi/Ghantasala/TMS comes close to Dr.SPB in versatility, Dr.KJY can be compared with the likes of Dr.PB.Srinivas, A.M.Rajah & the likes, NOT with the DR.SPB.
one request to all friends over here, some idiots are using foul languages to insult these legends, pls STOP it, there are legends. So give them your most respect!

"that transcends this mortal world and passes into the devine".
ethellam konjam overnnu ungallukey thonnaley :)
iam really not sure whether u know the meaning of versatileness.FMBN singing in classical and film music is not versatility.singing various types of songs is versatility, having the ability to sing carnatic & popular type of song is versatility.
why did u think a great composer like Maestro used KJY only to sing certain melody and sad songs while SPB was the main singer.KJY was the side item as for as the maestro was concerned why?? because SPB is VERSATILE.
Can u imaginge Dr.KJY singing for rajini.imagine a "vanthenda paalkaren" or "oruvan oruvan mudhalali" or "Enperu padaiyappa"??.There is no way ...He just cannot do it, period. These songs might be non classical or dappanguthu however u can classify it, but when some one cannot sing a certain type of song , he is not versatile...
This same person who sings the dappanguthu songs can sing a "Nilavey mugam kattu" from ejaman or "nilavu thoongum neram","nilavey vaa"(mouna ragam),"ayiram nilavey vaa","illaya nila".See i can give u so many gems on one particular word nila for melody and offcourse i can list more from various deptments.Dude Dr.SPB is the definition of ...... VERSATILITY.

take the padaiyappa song for example...
3 words
"En peru paddaiappa"
run the song in ur mind... the stress that Dr.SPB gives for the word padaippa.A feeling of ego, bravery is exihibited in the rendition of that single word PADDAIAPPA.u r supposed to keep a distance and awe at this man PADAIPPA.the following lines keep up those feeling,But then comes lines like
"pasamulla manushan appa..,nan mesa vacha kuzhandhaiyappa etc"he gets into that caressing voice which is that of ur friend.

nooo way man there is noooo way Dr.KJY can do it. Not in this life time.

Senty,
what is FMBN ??? :)
Those songs you have mention is just a drop, in the ocean of Dr.SPB, we are talking about couple of songs of the greatest out of his 36,000 - 40,000 odds songs!!!!
Senty, the other thing that must be addressed here is the depth / Modulation of Dr.SPB's voice!, man I went nuts after hearing his bass in Shankaraparanam, he modulates voice with amsing calibre accroding to actors, take Maine Pyar Kiya songs, listen to Dr.SPB's AWSOME voice in 'Dhil Dheewana Bin sachina ke ', SUPERB, AMASING. no other singer has this qauality, at the of 58 (in June 4th) he Voice is like 25 year old, isn't that DIVINE???, Dr,KJY's voice became bad after 1994, while Dr.SPB's voice is still going strong, how many thousands of singers are singing since the last 12 odd years, was any one able to come at least 10% near SPB's abilities NO WAY.
DR.SPB rulZZZZZZZZ

SPB's Hindi songs are hardly that: Hindi songs. For SPB's fans down sourth it might appear so. All SPB songs in Hindi sound like his Telugu/Tamil songs, Same intonation/accent. It was for two reasons those songs were appreciated at that time (but not now). 1.It was something new because the accent was not the usual Urduaized accent (Rafi to Udit this is the tradition) that people in the North were accustomed to. 2. People wanted to be generous to a South Indian singer.
SPB should stick to Tamil/Telugu where he is very good.
.
As a person living in the North I can also say this: rightly or wrongly, SPB is not held in the same stature as KJY in North/Mumbai. One has to just read local media here to realise this. When KJY visits Mumbai, good coverage is given in the local English media (Mid-day/TOI etc.). He is described as a clasical expert turned film singer, and placed alongside the legendary quartet Rafi/Mukesh/Lata/Kishore automatically. It is evident that KJY himself has carefully cultivated this image of his in the Northern media by the tone of his interviews with the media here. Whereas SPB is not accorded the same stature, but is treated as another leading Southern singer. Probably this might change over time..
Dear SPB fans: Let us not be carried away by our loyalties to deny the facts of life, though life is unjust at times.
