Bollywood composer A R Rahman is to write the score for the West End
version of 'The Lord of the Rings'.
Rahman, who also wrote the music for Andrew Lloyd Webber's
hit 'Bombay Dreams', has been commissioned to produce a raft of
original songs.
He will collaborate with Finnish folk group Varttina for the show,
which is due to open in spring 2005.
With a budget of £8m, the adaptation of J R R Tolkien's famous
trilogy is set to be the most expensive production ever staged in the
West End.
Rahman is a superstar in his native India and has sold more than
100m albums, composing the soundtracks to more than 50 Bollywood
films.
Producer Kevin Wallace said: "We are recreating Middle Earth and we
needed the music that goes with it to be unique.
"A R Rahman writes brilliant melodies with an exotic quality and we
know he will write something which audiences will adore."
Rahman will write some of the songs himself, Varttina will write
others, and they'll also co-write some numbers.
The premiere of the West End production is being timed to coincide
with the 50th anniversary of the publication of the complete Tolkien
trilogy: 'The Fellowship Of The Ring', 'The Two Towers' and 'The
Return Of The King'.

This is great! My (recent)favourite epic given musical shape by an TFM MD!! Let's hope that he comes up with some truly amazing scores. Also, want to see how he fares with Howard Shore, the composer for the LOTR movies.
Long over due congratulations to ARR!

This is really good for ARR!
Nice example to all of us! We can clearly see that ARR is leaving the mundane film world and moving into world arena.
I dont think he should get stuck up in regular TFM or Bollywood scores. We need atleast one Indian composer who we could talk about when we goto Edinburgh! :-)

There is no second opinion about the high talents of genius IR. But what is the need to misuse his name in this forum. We were happy when he composed symphony to be conducted by Royal Philhormany Orchestra. We are eager about the forthcoming Thiruvasakam in Symphony.
Here we are talking about ARR's achievements. Better let us talk about it and wish him all the success.
I remember the tamil crab story which is proved as real by tamil people. Also how easily people fall on silly provokings. It is time to ignore such things in all forums. More surprising this is the media of educated people and I could not conclude what manners people have learnt.

Guys,
I generally don't like ARR music because they always are build on some inspiration.
But I would heartly congradulate ARR for his achievements. When in Tamil we can fight between IR and ARR. When he has gone beyond that boundary, we should be proud that an Indian is achieving it.
Most IR fans(including me) are sad that why a genius like IR is not getting such opportunities. And this has been exhibited(in my opinion) in different unhealthy ways. But the truth is ARR has demonstrated how to achieve strategic heights in music arena with limited work. His PR is very good and so as his Marketing Strategy. He always aspire for higher and reaches the goal. Good work.
Eventhough IR is a unparalleled genius, he need to pick these qualities to achieve great heights in music. I only hope that this point will occur to him very soon. His Tiruvasakam Project is a great one and I wish him success in that too.

Business Acumen is different from being a Real genius. ARR has the talent/Business acumen. IR just has talent and very bad PR.
But I am still proud of ARR to achieve this feat.. hopefully he does not turn out his old stuff into an English album, probably something Original and different would be gr8

ARR somehow seems to be the producer of music for music consumers of the size of USA, Europe, Japan & censored China within India itself (let us say 200 million young consumers) and most of those rich dudes are in India & China, enuff to keep any average musical / album running for years. consumerism is mostly about group behavior and profits and not about "quality or art". Indians are the best at group consumerism.
otherwise, what is that Rahman has done that a thousand British /Euro / Australian bands / Orchestra haven't done and that too in amazingly diverse styles. Totally mystifies me.
One thing i Know is that, the new Indian audience is really dumb and to depend on only one mediocre talent like ARR is even more disturbing. Why is that Indians can't wake up n say, f_k these Indian styles, musicals and all that crap, let us do something global, something racy and even as original as the Beatles, Johny Hates Jazz, etc....
where are those talents? i am fed up with depending only on ARR and IR for music news. damn boring all this is.

Since when were the Beatles ever original? Everything they did had precedents .. EVERYTHING! They just happened to do it with lots of recognition. They were a decent music band .. not particullarly original.

outsider: do you mean to say that a song like yesterday, michelle, strawberry fields forever, hey jude was ever to date composed by anyone else? they are simple tunes with such profound sublime feelings in them. i am not talking about style (which is a rahman distraction) i am saying where is the content, man. where is it, wehre is the tune, where is the perfection. taal se taal mila you call that frickin tune?
all i mean to indians used to be savvy listenere really appreciated great bands like genesis, pink floyd, dire straits, petshopboys, abba, baccara, and so many zillions of them, but when it comes to finding such globally acceptable stylized content in India, we have to look for two individuals only - IR & ARR. That is it. But, ARR is just contrived crap except that he is different from all - which means, nowehre near old Indian film composers and nowhere near at all with the tunes and ryhthms of say Phil collins or MJ. and totally original with no fricking content or tune or any s_it in his music. How can we be a music power if the frickin Indian media continue to support an empty cauldron of dried up soup stickin in the itneriors like stale decomposing meat?
stop the Rahman support, you frickin media, this guy is no fun and Roja is for kindergarten kids.
Basically, India has no musical talent ever to go on a global style and all that Hindi and stylized Tamizh shittt is all shittt.
frickin crap. i've had enuff of this rahman, send his out.... lord of the frickin rings.
BAN THIS RAHMAN

Naansense, I am saying that the STYLE of most everything the beatles did was not original. They used simple pop song formats (A-B-A-B-C-B-A-B-B etc) throughout their music but with different styles/arrangements/instrumentations.
Rahman writes for film and often uses more open, jazzy arrangments which lends to the shifting moods of the film, and not rely on convenetional song format. He has strong melodies and interesting arrangments that keep the listener's ear. Some people like the creativity he brings to his music. Other people prefer simple pop songs that sound the same from start to finish. It's the difference between simple songs .. and jazz, classical or film-music. The Beatles, MJ, Phil Colins all wrote songs. Genesis and Pink Floyd wrote songs with pretensions to classical. ARR writes film music which sometimes crosses over to pop format.
