Vj, MD for Tel "Pelli" was SAR. That was his first major hit in Tel:-) (esp. the song Rukku rukku rukkumani) and brought him some more Tel offers later.

Maybe this has been discussed already :
Is IR's "Aalampol Velampol....." from Yejaman a recycled tune from his own "Poova eduthu oru maalai.." from the film Amman Kovil Kizhakale ?
Incidentally these two songs were played one after the other when I was travelling by night-bus from Madras to Madurai. That's when it struck me....I guess the similarity is in the first lines.

Watched 'mazha' a malayalam film *ing Samyuktha varma, Biju menon . Music was by Ravindran. The movie has a humming sung by KJY and a new female singer that comes throughout the film. This is a total lift of the humming part that comes at the start of 'en veetu thottathil'.
Major portion of the movie takes place in tamilnadu and hence ravindran has used four of Rahmans songs at various situations to be played in the Background(uppu karuvaadu, en mel vizhundha mazhai thuLiye, margazhi thingaL allavaa and uyirum neeye)

Ramki: the mazha theme is neelambari based. So is 'en veettu thottathil' starting alapana. So you can't really call it copy :)

cosmician,
AlupOl VelupOl & Poova Eduthu are completely different tunes.
In fact they are based on 2 different ragas, ShankarabharaNam and mAyA mALava gowLa. Both have music by IR and have Pallavis that end with the word 'vacheney'. I guess there ends the similarity :)

Poo Pookum Osai Adhai Kekkathan Asai
and
China Chinna Asai siragadikka Asai are similary As both ends in Asai:)

Copying in Tamil film songs only started from IR's appearance in the 70's and this practice is followed by him even today but him only. His name would probably appear in the Guinness book for this extraordinary achievement (over 4000 songs, 95% of them were recycled for the shake of keeping this planet cleaner). IR fans should have something to celebrate !!!

Recently the spoof movie "RobinHood - Men in Tights" was re-telecast in Star Movies. In one of the Scenes, where Robin Hood teaches his fellow men the art of Bow and arrows, the BGM was exactly the ditto of the starting piece of the song "Oruvan Oruvan Mudalali" from Muthu. Any of you guys noticed it?

i feel 'Maarugo maarugo' from Kamal's Sathileelaavathy is somewhat close to the 'alaipaayuthey kanna' (not from the movie.. but in general) song. btw, i dont think it can be categorized as COPY as well.

Vj, if I may answer...
Both alaipaayuthey and maarugo are based on Kaanada ragam. Another song in kaanada is "Poomaalai vaangi vandhaan" from sindhubhairavi.

Watched a spanish movie 'Burnt movie' which was based on a true bank robbery in 1960s Argentina. The film plays a spanish song which was supposed to be very popular in 60s. The song sounded very very similar to 'busthaan PTC ullethaan qmc' song from veetle viseshengka(MD IR).
Since it is IR, i expect responses like 'they are based on same raaga' etc etc ...LOL

Nazir,
I've been looking for the soundtrack of 'Burnt Money' too (originally called 'Plata Quemada'). The movie is a very fast paced and stylish gay version of Bonnie and Clyde and the soundtrack includes quite a few old tango/spanish tracks. In fact www.musimundo.com.ar was the only site which had the audio track with samples and complete listing, but it doesnt seem to have it now.

In fact, 'Anbe anbe kollaadhey' will slightly remind you of 'Hawa Hawa! Yeh Hawa!' of Pakistani singer Hassan Jahangir (1989 Hindi pop)!

Have added IR's Kaadhal Vandhiruchu and Uriah Heep's 'Lady in black' to my site. This instance is far from being labelled as a copy, but I sure can find traces, enough to justify an inspiration.
Thanks to K Shyam from the "connection between IR and uriah heep" thread for this really interesting piece of info!
And OISG...

KarthikS.. can u mention the year in which both the songs came? i think "Kalyanaraman" came in 1979/80...
btw, "Idhayam oru koil" from 'Idhayakoil' is kinda similar to "Kanmaniye pesu" from 'Kaakichattai', especially the beginnings,IMO. (probably the same as "Amma endrazhaikkaadha" and "Janani janani")

I've mentioned the year of release in my site. However, here they are...
Kalyanaraman - 1979
Salisbury - 1970
(Salisbury is the album which has the song Lady in black)

I dont know which came out first but, i think the flute parts at the beginning of both the following songs are similar: "poralae ponuthai" from "Karuthamma" and "sempoovai" from "siraichalai"
Somebody please confirm
