Regarding using the commercially available loops, those seem to be the major reasons for ARR's music to be liked. In my opinion, but for the beats the rest of the compositions are very pedestrian in nature.
The other technique used by ARR seems to be using old MSV tunes and polishing it with newer beats. (like Enna Vilai Azhage from Uyire ...like Thanga Padhakathin Mele or the song from Kadhalar Dhinam which was based on the Varumaiyin Niram Sivappu song or the tune from Lagaan that is based of sehti ketto, sethi ketto settan patriya sethi ketto from Ethir Neechal).
When IR used that song "Pudhu Mappilaikku" in Abborva Sagodharargal, the story goes that Kamal kept insisting to IR that he needs a song like the MGR song. And IR composed Pudhu Mappilaikku more as a challenge to spook Kamal by just turning around the Aval parpathile song such that it was not evident to Kamal.
Irrespective of what has been attributed to IR, the preponderance of IR's music has been his original compositions, especially the ones that stand out to be the absolute gems of IRs. His compositions reflect his genius, his depth and the variey.

There is a McDonald s case resembling Balki s ads.Mail it to him.
He may have to say something more than " IR is one of my favourite composers"

YSR's "Kaadhal Samrajyam" has a song "Vidinjakaa Kalyanaam"..... this song has a piece that is 100% exact replica of a song from jeans which goes like "enne leaveuu leaveuuu leaveuuu" (i think its Columbus, Columbus song)..... it is a 100% match.....

Samples/loops kill creativity. These are the creations of a western culture which thinks anything can be modularised/shrink-wrapped and sold. The legitimate motive being anybody should be able to be musically 'creative' (productive, I'd say) using these library and technique. This has turned music production from a mind-body coordination activity (playing instruments) into a purely 'mind' activity (sitting in front of the computer doing cut-and-paste and adding/delete/modifying tracks). I am really doubtful this is good for music in the long run.
Other MDs who follow this technique are YSR and Shankar, Ehsaan, Loy.

DIGRESSION :
kiru - *long run* is there something like that nowadays ? well, its not only in music, in nearly all the fields, people are interested in very very *short* term things only.... so its the people whose taste has changed and our MD's cater to their taste.....
END DIGRESSION

Hi Kiru :-)(can you please email me...i was searching for a writeup you once sent me...)
>>Samples/loops kill creativity.<<
But Kiru....don't you think that if the technology is used properly is another method of being creative in music creation ?
Of course, there will always be misuse...but in the long run originality will stand out and shine...
Actually speaking, all MDs use standard percussion rhythms in most of their songs...do we call this recycling or reusing of existing beat patterns ?

I heard a heavily inspired song of IR yesterday on FM... I think the song started with 'Strange...' and the entire song had the music of 'Vidiya vidiya nadanam' ... Though it was not entirely lifted from the song, it was definitely an inspiration..Unfortunately I couldnt get the song name and the artiste...If someone knows or heard about this song, let me know...

Awe, I really dont know about that... I heard it on FM 91.7 and only from the middle.. I was waiting for them to name the song and artiste but they didnt and continued with the next one... It was the initial piece of music in 'vidiya vidiya nadanam' which comes through out the song...The actual song itself sounded more like MJ's Thriller but i really can't say who has inspired who...

i dunno whether this has been mentioned b4...
the charanam of "Yaaro sunlo zara" - Rangeela which goes "humko dekho humhai yaara.. apni manzilke raja" sounds like "oru naal povaar oru naal varuvaar ovvorunaalum thuyaram" from the song "Tharaimel pirakkavaithaan" - Padagotti.

Vj...
I had once actually mentioned that the beginning of the song sounds like "En Soha kadhaiyai kelu thaikulame". The similarity lies in the situation and lyrics where the singer is asing an audience to listen to him.....maybe that's why the same raga or tune has been used. Musically knowledgeable here will know better.

Shock of My life
----------------
I was watching "Appadi pakadhuna vendam" song from IVAN in a countdown in jaya TV. It was in 5th place. I switch channels and landed up in MTV I guess. Shock.."Mere khayaalon ki malika" song from Josh was going on. What a similarity in tunes. God. Couldn't believe. Josh is by Anu Malik. It released some 2.5 years before.
Sing
"Mere Khayaalon ki malika"
"Mere Khayaalon ki malika"
"chaaro tharaf theri chaiyaan re"
"chaaro tharaf theri chaiyaan"
and the
"Appadi pakardhunna vendam"
"kannala thakkardhu vendam"
and continue.
I don't want to say that IR copied AM now. That will be the last thing that I would like to imagine, but can some one explain the similarity.
Karthik---
What is this is it co-incidence?
Or is there a common source for both.
Don't bounce on me..just make your own judgement.?
I am talking about the tune only. The words almost match.

sorry:
Josh song is
"Mere Khayaalon ki malika"
"Mere Khayaalon ki malika"
"chaaro tharaf theri chaiyaan re"
"sammne aakke byaan"
"chaaro tharaf theri chaiyaan"

i dont feel there is any similarity..!
btw, whoz the original composer for "Aval varuvaala".. 'coz it was made first in kannada, then into telugu and then into tamil... was SAR the MD for all the movies?

no Vj i don't think avaL varuvaaLa is in sivaranjani. So it rules out SAR. Then who is it?? simple D..E..V..A

Vj,
are you asking about the 'AvaL varuvaaLaa' movie (*ing Ajith, Simran) or the song 'AvaL varuvaaLaa ?'
if its a movie, SAR was the MD for both telugu and tamil versions, not sure about Kannada !

Are Yaar
I find no similarity.*
AVal Varuvala is a remake of Agni Sakshi (nana Patekar,Manisha,Kackie) which inturn was copied from "Sleeping with the enemy" which inturn has resemblances with KB s "Avargal".
I think Aval Varuvala telugu originals sound like "Maragathamani" /"raj Koti"which were copied by SAR in the tamil remake.

yeah NagaS.. am talking about the movie "Aval varuvala" *ing ajith, simran... the kannada one had ramesh arvind/charulatha... the telugu one had maheshwari/(dunno the hero name)... all the songs in all the movies were same and were a hit in all the languages... just curious whether SAR is really the MD for them.

"Soolam" serial's promo which runs in Sun TV has Ilayaraja's "Siraichalai" (Kaalapani) BGM track used fully. Kelvi kaekkaradhukku all illaadhavaraikkum ppl will use all of his compositions for their own purpose in TV serials and other stuffs.

'Ponnoviyam' song is from 'kazhugu' right ?
A humming piece in the beginning of this song (by IR and SJ) looks very similar to MSV's song tune 'Ettu vitha kattaLaikaL' from movie 'maNal kayiRu'
which one of these movies came first ?
NagaS

nagaS.. yeah.. the movie name is "Pelli" (which i got from an SAR interview, since am not familiar with telugu movies).
as far as 'manal kayiru' song goes, both the songs are kinda fast paced tunes ( the humming and the "ettuvitha" song rendition).. so probably they sound kinda similar though they're miles apart IMO. kinda same case of "poongatriley" (uyire) and "Pirakkumbodhum azhugindrai" (Kavalai illadha manidhan).
