I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Sometimes (many times!) emotions cannot be put into words. They are best felt when left to the reader's imagination. I could so well picturize this whole scene in front of my eyes and could almost feel the overwhelming joy that you and Suresh would have gone through. Wow, such a memorable India trip to you.
And as imminent as it may have been, it is sad to see "to be concluded" caption at the end. But then all good things have to come to an end, right?
One big thanks (how can mere words import my gratitude?) to you for sharing all of this. By any chance (since no one asked you this already), did you or Suresh have a chance to get some of your snaps with V or J or both? (Or did you already answer this question?)

Vicariousness has never been so vivid! Your Meeting Greatness series has been a mini-showcase in itself. Thank you for sharing this experience with us - and with such delight. Halwa saapitta madhiri - or another way of saying it would be - Innaikkelaam Megame Megame Kaetta Madhiri! :-)
A few moments ago I was going through my old collection of songs and came upon Mazhai Kaalam Varugindradhu from Paattum Bharathamum. A completely overlooked gem - and listening to it sent a shiver all over - all over again! Such a smoothly executed daunting composition! It in turn reminded me of the song from Mera Saaya - Naino Mein Badhra Chaaye...one of my all time favorite LM solos! Funny how a VJ song triggers a cross-referential LM song! (Or makes you do a double take on two manifestations of film singing greats!)
You make this wondrous revival possible. And for that alone, your write-ups are invaluable!

I agree with you Naaz. "Mazhai kaalam varugindradhu" is my fav song too. This is one of the songs of VJ which I sing frequently

Saravanan, thanks for sharing your experience. most of all, the way you portray the picture, the way you turn mere words to a visual treat is amazing. It has been said before, but if you ever decide to go for an alternate career, you know what to do:)

Mazhai Kaalam Varugindradhu is a song not too many people have heard, or if they have, they've forgotten it a long time ago. It is only upon replaying it again after these many months that I found the magic of the song to be still intact. You must be quite the singer if you sing this solo "frequently." I doubt any of the current TFM singers will be able to scale such a song with such ease and relish.
There is a line in this song on which VJ lingers just a bit to bring out a longing, a burning viragam:
Alangaram Kalaiyamal Dhinam Vaadugindraen...
She prolongs the word "Alangaram" to emphasise the hours spent by the maiden in "pretty"ing herself for the beloved...and the sheer weight of disappointment when he doesn't show up - the faltering "Vaadugindraen" completes the moment of sadness. VJ picks up the verve in the very next line.
A song that can be listen to again and again, and every time it reveals a new or missed nuance to the discerning ear.

Thanks again and again :-). I am positive that I am not the only one who feels that your work ought to be published in a reputed magazine or newspaper. I am sure the editors would be only too thrilled to have such lovely work published!
BTW, is the song "Thiruvonam Pulari Than..." from this Onam album by V. Dakshinamoorthy? It is such a soothing melody, which VJ has sung in a soft, subdued voice, almost like a whisper. Its one of my favourite songs.

Thanks all! It has been a great pleasure to me as well, to recall memories of meeting VJ.
Naaz, you have exactly pointed out the very line that I too am always moved by, in Mazhaikkalaam varukindrathu. 'Alankaram kalaiyaamal dhinam vaadugindren' is so much evocative of supressed angst. And how much undying faith there is in the line 'Avan koyil karpooram enakkaga eriyum, avan megham dhinandhorum ennakkaga pozhiyum'
AV, I'm sorry I don't know much about the 'Onam' album. All that VJ said was it was composed by V. Dakshinamoorti, and it became very popular. However I remember that she sang a bit from one of the songs in the Sangeetha Sagaram programme- a song that started with the line 'Malayala mannil--'

Naaz, Saravanan, need I say that those lines which end the charanam are like "Theermaanam" for a dance? Culmination of wonderful lyrics(Kannadaasan?), tune and rendering by VJ.

The more I listen to songs from the 70s, I am shocked by how much I have missed of the lyrics - just caught up in the tune and other trivia about the film. Mazhaikkaalam has no shortage of metaphors. The song so beautifully eschews all cliches. I find that more and more in these flashback songs. I rediscovered Muthamizh Sondhangal, Eththanai Sandhangal from Madi Veetu Aezhai, today. An imaginative composition by MSV, and VJ-TMS - sariyana poti!
On another note: I doing a sort of mini comparison between Bol Re Papi and En Ullam Azhagana Velliththirai. When I have a little more time, I will get around to presenting my views on these two songs that are studies in imagistic contrast, but perfect within the thematic context. Let it seep a bit :-)
Mythila -
Including you, that's four who have heard Mazhaikkaalam. The entire song, if I remember right, is a dance performance by (Selvi) Jayalalitha in the film. Your identification of "Theermanam" is - what shall I say? - absolutely in step? :-)

That MVE TMS-VJ duet never got its due in air time.I love the lyrics too
"Ezhai mana yazhai dinam meetum vaLaik karame"
"Kadhalil ellorum Kambanin PiLLaithan"
The charanams on the whole .....very imaginatively composed.

Naaz,
I think i have heard mazhaikaalam varuginrathu but what with " Jayalalitha decked up as a peacock among other things I had blissfully forgotten it. now i am left with only the images & not the song.( is it the song where Sivaji books up the entire theatre? - saravana come to the rescue..
but in a movie which had Sivagami aadavanthal , manthorana veedhiyil & the TMS solo ...kambanai koopidungal seethayai kaanbaar... enge pocchu pallavi ;-( your song got left behind.
my song of the movie is Sivagami aada vandhal.
aside: poets are given to hyperbole but i always thought this was the limit " chinna idayil malar idazh pattalum nogatho " MGR on Jayalalitha:-)

Vengayam, Sivaji singing 'Illai endru solvadhundhan idai allava minnal idai allava'to Sarojadevi is not far behind ;)
Btw that captivating TMS solo starts with 'Karapanaikku meni thandhu' and picks up with 'Deivathin thereduthu'.
Pattum Bharathathum, on the whole, had a set of scintillating songs by MSV. 'Mazhaikkalam' begins with MSV chanting 'Thirisoolam sathiyam'.
You have left out SPB's 'My song is for you, my love is for you--guess who?', which ends with SPB singing 'Ennadi Rakkamma'!

But "Maargazhi paniyandro avaLathu sirippu"-I still feel KKD has underplayed Jayalalitha's graceful smile!
(At the same time "Narai vizhunthalum nenil thirai vizhavillai"should suit Gemini to the hilt..!)

"Jayalalitha decked up as a peacock" - enna nakkalana gender-bending-o? :-)
OISG -
I am glad you recall the song from Madi Veetu Aezhai. I was also awestruck by the line "Kadhalil...Kambanin Pillaithaan." So much literary history in just one line!
What is ever more apparent in these songs is the complete absence of the mayil/kuyil, rasa/rosa, kaalai/solai, mugam/sugam type of predictable couplet endings. The lyrics are poetic/poignant even out of context. And, for all that, these songs were also composed for commercial consumption.
What happened to such writing? State-of-the-Art (sadly) triumphed over the Art-of-the-State.
Another song which did not get the air time is so rightly deserved is:
Neeradi Pattududhththi Nindravargal Yaavarkkum...Ullam Urugadha, Endhan Oonum Urugadha
from Dhisai Mariya Paravaigal (the title song had better luck.) A song like this is child's play for VJ. One line (among many) halogen on her matchless talent: Kandha, Azhagu Thirukkumara, Sendhil Amudhavadivazhaga...A soul's divine union with her Lord.
The aural pun of "Ullamurugadha" - the "muruga" always present in every utterance - how long since we've seen such finesse in TFM lyrics?

Saravanan,
I know I had wantedly left out "my song is for you". There are a few defining moments in life. Have you watched "Wonder Years" ? The above mentioned song and one number in Thangathile Vairam ( not En Kannmani) stirred in me certain feelings and i took the shaky step from kid to adoloscent. it was maybe the dimple, maybe her voice or may be her figure like a scenic railway... but Sripriya ( the old nubile one) is there in my mind! in my close circle of F & F people still say ungaal padam whenevr a sripriya flick is shown on TV. Naaz will shout at this digression , hence i did not mention the song..( much like OISG's Amala- Simran fancy!) After sripriya only Shilpa shetty lights me up to such an extent that there is a Tada from my home ministry;-)
Naaz,
No gender bender but she is decked up with lot of plumage-- and you wouldn't call her peahen would you? VM also did it in " Thogai Ila mayil" Mohan going gaga over Poornima... that at least u could put it down to Mike Mohan's IQ!!
OISG,
JL ought to have retired with Aayirathil Oruvan --the only movie she looked tolerable. Her smile looked more like a cheshire cat! But that is my take!
