U people stop giving so much importance to numbers.
I suppose Deva and AM have EACH done many more films than ARR. But they are nowhere near ARR.
Also parthipan, I am enjoying myself when u or Mr gentelman (so-called) talk about common cold and asthma and blocked noses. Please keep the fun going on. But Rafi is as good as SPB, theres no defeating this fact - try HARDER and more desperately if u wish.

SPB has done about 40K songs...
This i heard from SPB's mouth in his interview with Gemini TV (i guess), a month back.
It was told by Lata Mangeshkar to Bill Clinton, when Bill came to India. There was a kind of felicitation party by forerunners of indian culture esp. music including cine music. It was attended by Lata. During the party Bill talked to Lata when SPB was standing besides. Bill asked her "how did you manage to sing about 35,000 songs"? To that question Lata told, you shouldn't have asked this in awe to me because the man standing besides me, Mr. S.P.Balasubramaniam, has over 40K to his account. On hearing this Bill immediately asked SPB that "Mr. Balasubramaniam what else you do"? Implying that SPB always does only singing. On hearing this all laughed.
This incident was narrated so by SPB in that Gemini TV interview. It is the same interview in which SPB told about simplicity of KVM which I had quoted some days back in one of KVM's threads.

well, said kupps, I also know the fact that lata has told clinton that SPB sang nearly 40,000 songs in his 32 years in singing business, I have also heard him saying it explicitly in several interviews that he has sang nearly 40k, it is highly possible for singer like SPB, cos he sings in all 13 languages of India, although he was most poular in Tamil & Telungu. SPB has gained this through his;
1. Singing styly(no body can beat that laughter),
2. His amazing singing talents, especially in Carnatic, althoug he was not trained in this field like KJY,Unnikrishnan, Hariharan, Mohammed Rafi, even Mano
3. last but least his amazing voice, every body loves his voice from 5 year old child to 90 year old grandad, what an awsome voice he has

i just happened to hear star songs in which spb has two nos. the voice was the same as i heard in the early 80's.this is totally amazing. if god willing, he continues this voice, i see him singing for another atleast15 years i.e.till beemarathshanthi.i think history is going to be made.( i think he has already entered into guiness book of world records)in which case history has already been made.

I beg to differ with you all. The greatest singer ever is Luciano Pavarotti. And please don't bother arguing.

>>>spb has two nos. the voice was the same as i heard in the early 80's.this is totally amazing. if god willing, he continues this voice,
Exactly. I couldn't immagine both the songs with out SPB. The tunes are good, but in hindi they became a good song. The lyrics, in tamil did not fit at all. But, for SPB, song would have been a real dead.
Listen to SPB in Rasigaa. When he starts singing that "Andha egipththin mammiyum imai thirakkum", you feel as if some body suddenly hitting a six and brings the match alive, which otherwise was heading towards a boring draw.
I don't care what a person he is. His voice is devine.

Bharath, I hope you know I was just kidding :)
Even though of course I do love Luciano and has one of the most most amazing ranges and voice timbres, he's a
purely western classical opera singer. The comparison just does not arise.

imho, the last very good song from spb is 'sempoovae' from siraichaalai.
what a song. he definitely elevated a good song to a different plane by his voice.
he sounds as if he is singing from a distant past carrying one through memories of a mountain top, a desert fort and into depths of ocean.
such a longing is his voice!

hey fans, just read the following articles about the LEGENDARY artist(known as SPB) by the artist;
K.V. Mahadevan:
Music DirectorA sizeable credit for the National Award given to me by the Government of India for the "BEST MUSIC DIRECTOR" for the film "SANKARABHARANAM" goes to Balu….Of course the rendition of the songs by him contributed tremendously to the success of the movie. It was, in my opinion, equal to, if not better than, the best efforts from a specialist in classical songs. Today he has truly established himself as one of the few singers of quality in all the South Indian languages, including Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi.
Though he is known to come late for the recording, he more than compensates for the delay by ensuring that all the songs are rendered to perfection in the first try itself. For all his popularity, he is very humble and very friendly with all members of the orchestra. He also provides a number of useful suggestions to improve the music for his songs…
In his humbleness, magnanimity, and love for music, he has no equal today. His golden voice is the one and only in the industry.
S. JANAKI:
What I can say about a highly multi talented, most brilliant singer in many languages a very successful dubbing artiste, music director, a natural actor-SPB
As a singer he ably, rightly and well-deservedly succeeded the stalwarts like Mohd. Rafi, Ghantasala and Kishore Kumar whose enchanting voices had a lasting spell on the minds of cine music lovers for a long period and whose charm still continue and their Melody echoes in the ears of everybody.
His quick and easy grasp of a tune of any kind is a very rare gift and an enviable boon that rightly and necessarily compelled him to render the highest number of songs…which is a unique record and a great feat…
He is also a good speaker and a capable compeer at Cine and other functions. He has a Devil's energy charged and recharged with divine grace from time to time to work hard for a very long hours in a day continuously for years together untiringly.
His achievements are out-standing and phenomenal. Above all, of course, the time also has been splendid and favorable to him as constant faithful friend opening many a good opportunities thus he is very lucky and great as he is today. He is a miracle in the singing world, and it is no exaggeration that he is an adult prodigy.

I am just so upset 2 c people who do not have any sense in music(A.A) talks of junk singers like Udit, Hariharan, Shanker mahadevan, Sukvinder singh. these nasalist only survive in music world cos of ARR, he is the one who introduced these nasalist to TFM. although ARR introduce some good singers like Unni Krishnan, Unni menon, SPB.Pallavi, Anuradha Sriram, Sujatha.
Dr. SPB is the one & only intermes of :
1. Most beautiful voice, that is so sweet
2. most divine voice
3. ability to modulate extremly well
4. Ability to sing from rock to classical without any difficulties
5. his voice is so sweet when he talks as well
6. He talks 4 so many actors, if the films are dubbed in other languages (Kamal, Mohan)
7. Famous Music director
I do not know if any body realises the fact that SPB has directed for 25 films!!!,(Sigaram, Thodikum karangal) that is an awful lot 4 a singer , out of all 25 he directed they were all super hit.
I know for fact that S. Janaki directed for one film in tamil.
Questions:
1) How many films did M.rafi direct music for?
2) How many films did KJY direct music for?
3) how many films did TMS direct music for?
4) how many films did hariharan direct music 4?
5) how many films did lata or Kishor kumar direct for?
I need answers !!!
also that AA idiot says that "the nasalist Udit's khaal thoosu SPB, when it comes 2 melody", that just shows how stupid & idiotic he is when it comes to music!!!.
I can not imagine IFM without SPB, it would stink like shit!!
SPB is the lord of IFM!!!

I don't find SPB's voice as sweet as Rafi's voice. I found in some songs he sang that his voice sounded a bit thicker and not the same as of his other songs. Rafi's voice was pure GOLD and his voice was divine. I cannot think of another singer's voice that can match the voice of Rafi. SPB is no doubt great but in terms of voice i give the edge to Rafi. There is no one on this earth who can match an actor as well as Rafi did. Rafi used to study each actor and their personality before he sang for them. He could match anyone voice for voice and i have seen nobody do that as well as he did.
By the way Manithan, Rafi did compose music for 8 non - film songs. In his last interview, Rafi said that he had been offered by S. Mukherjee one of the directors to compose music for one of his films but he refused to because he firmly believed that one should be perfect in only one field. He gave examples such as Talat Mahmood who took up acting and after he could neither click as a singer or an actor. Also Mukesh took up production and lost heavily when his films flopped. So even if SPb has composed music for films it doesn't mean that he is greater than the other singers.
If you would like to read his last interview the link is
