Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Avr, thank you for the para 5 and 6 of your posting above. I have not mentioned any particulars about your debate with Naaz, it was between you 2, so I am not very sure why you had to give me another explanation. I have read the previous posts from both of you and also have read your apologies to him. I also have read how maturely he overlooked many of your over-reactions and also praised you for your ethusiasm for dakshini music.
Regarding ethic prejudice of North and South, I can say this much only, that to my knowledge, it is true. Us northerners (my family originates in Almorah, UP) have always treated our fellow indians from the south differently because of their skin colour and language calling all of them names like "thambi" and "woh madharasi" and also making fun of how they speak, eat or dress etc. This has happened since my childhood!!! And I am 40 yrs older than you, or more!
If good and trained and established singers today are not in demand it is the way film music is today. I find everything so similar and awful!! That is the case with north and south filmi music. When I was in India, 15-20yrs ago I have attended many concerts of Bhakti Sangeet by Vani Jairam, Suresh Wadkar, Anup Jalota, Krishna Sahai etc. All of them are very gifted singers with superb command of language and also voice. Tonal quality wise SJ and VJ are different. SJs voice did not have the "weightiness" of even AB (though they are singing similar songs, one in hindi and one in south indian languages.) Both singers would have faded had they not been exclusively encouraged and offered many songs by OP Nayyar and Illayaraja. This is IMO.
And also you have to remember that the times were different when VJ or Suman Kalyanpur or others made their entry in the bombay music field, when LM was queen and had many chamchas and control over recording companies.Today things are very different in music, singing, industry and marketing. I think anybody with money or right connections can today become a singer or music composer, IMO!! Training and committment is unnecessary because the MDs and the public don't care about such things to a great extent!! Ufsos ki baat hai!!
So if good singers like VJ and KJY and PS and many others from previous times are not in demand, I cannot think that is their fault. I am gald that they are not singing all the kachchra that is considered music by present generation!! All IMO, and No presonal offence to you my dear man!

I understand...but the thing is that *I* did not mean anything against south indians, though other northies might have. Thats why I felt hurt.
also had LM,AB had unfair control over HMV, then HMV wouldnt have released the large series of Suman's Golden Collections in various languages, or VJs albums with raghunath Seth.

avr, if you do not mean anything against south indians why you use phrases like "oh-so-southie" or say MS subbulakhmi and BMK ruin hindi bhajans?? Do you know that gandhiji listened to MSS "Vaishnava Janato" everyday of his life? Maybe he did not know his hindi or gujarati!!
I am a native of UP and also am fluent in brijbasha and hindi, and have master degree in Sanskrit from Benares University, so and I am sorry but you are very very biased when you opine that VJs hindi/brij songs and bhajans are mispronounced. I also have heard her give semi-classical and bhajan concerts in Haridwar and Benares - with jugalbandhi with Anup Jalota, and there was not one in the 10,000 crowd who was not mesmerised by both their flawless singing and devotion!!!
Also you can click on Neeld's VJ (link at intro to this thread) websongs which also has hindi and meera songs - with Pandit Birju Maharaj and also in perfect Sanskrit (Jayadevas poetry)!!. Where do you find the misprounounciation?? Also the latest sawan song selection on the website of Neeld are a very fine eg. of VJs "shuddh" hindi rendition. SPB and KJY also have fine hindi songs in many movies - eg. Vansh, Dada, Chasm-e-Budhdoor, Haisiyat and Sajan Bina Suhagan etc.
Also about accent, my dear man, LM sang her early hindi song with Marathi accent eg. Majboor, Aan, Aah etc. In fact, I also feel LM imitated Noor Jehan many times in singing style in the early days. But that did not make her a poor singer, did it???
LM and AB everybody in India and outside India knows are great singers!! But in the bombay music industry everybody knows how they also play dirty politics in the past...eg. LM did not also like ABs success with OPN!!! Both sisters were not communicating with the other for more than 10 full years!! (this was even before you were born, I am sure!) Today Alka Yagnik is famous because of association with Madhuri Dixit's preference. But AY was pushed to the side before Ek Do Teen - even when she sang the hit song "Mere Angne Mein" from the movie Lawaaris, with Kalyanji-Anandji.
Now the singing queens are old and losing their voices, so they cannot control recording company contracts, and have less power. That is why AY, KK and SS are making good names and success for themselves, today!! But the music industry was dominated by LM for 30-40 years and very many good female singers were crushed (eg. VJ, Runa Laila, C.mukherji, Mitali singh, SK, Hemanti Shukla, sulakshana pandit etc.) So LM may be great, but she not such a fine person like you may think.
From me, a old hindi, urdu, brij, sanskrit speaking
elder buzurgh I must say that you have a lot of north indian bias and south indian prejudice. But I think you are also very young and have much knowledge/experience about to gain.
Neeld thank you for all the songs in the site. I am specially happy with your inclusion of VJs hindi/meera songs. I am listening to them almost every day for 1-2 hours. Please add more songs... my humble request!

Neel D,
Can you tell me if you possess the following VJ songs with you...
Prabhuji main anaath thum naath
O ri o baansuri bol naye kuch bol re
Tan hai vina taar hai saansain jeevan hai jhankaar
Meri tum laaj rakho giridhaari
Daras bin dhukhan laage nain
- last two in the list are Meera bhajans in brijbasha, very native in flavour. I am happy to hear "Man re paras hari ke charan" from your website every morning. It is a beautiful meera bhajan. VJ pronounces the word "seetal" like a typical brij speaker. Hindi influence makes other singers to say "sHeetal" but in brij it is without the "shi" or H syllable always. Only native brij speakers can know the difference in this case.
All above songs are my favoured bhajans of VJ-raghunaath seth. My tape with these bhajans is full with noise as it is very poor quality recording. Please add any or ALL songs to your website if you have it!! I will be very grateful to you!!

Hello Kuriakose! I was expecting reply from NeelD but in that place I get a post from a person with a name of my college friend from Cochin many years ago!! YOu post in this thread in the last 6 months?? I don't think I came across your name beofre in this thread or other discussions...But I am posting only in the last week hoping for the good posters to come back to the discussions.I am 63 yrs and can be naaz's grandpa's age!! It is a compliment for me...thank you for your kind comparison!! Hahaha! I really was a good fan of naaz's posts and also of vijay, suresh, arunuk,s0 etc.many serious writers. My english command is not super and not like those posters. But I am learning now!! With naaz posts I used to look into dictionery many times and found out many new english words I did not know beofre. But I am liking the influence!!I also sent two private emails to naaz. But so far I have not got any reply!

since you consider me biased, prejudiced, south-hater, please do not write to me henceforth. I know what I am writing and I know what I feel is native and non-native. (If u wish, u can do an archival search on HFM threads...please).
But the greatest joke is LM sang "AAH" and "AAN" songs in Marathi accent. Thanks for a laughter of the century. I know now where the true bias lies.
I have decided not to read this thread or reply to you any further.I have written enough about LMs,ABs personality and if u want to please read interviews by Suman praising LM,AB.If that doesnt convince u, so be it.
Thanks, (especially for your detailed psycho-analysis of me :-))
With due respect,
avr

I have with me a file containing interviews by Mitali Singh, Suraiyya, Shamshad Begam, Suman Kalyanpur, Sudha Malhotra, Dilraj Kaur, Hemanti Shukla and a host of other female singers and their praises for the two sisters. In any case, I promise, I shall stop visiting this thread.
Because I hate all southis....bla bla bla.

Avr, my tamil brothers and sisters in all discussion forums in TFM page are very kindhearted so tolerate your unnecessary HFM comparisons. This is TFM page but every time it is you who intorduce LM or AB or so and so in all your posts. Why you do so?? It is a sign of your arrogance and bias IMO to show off your HFM knowledge in a community of southern indians!! But you cannot face the dirty political games LM AB played to rule HFM, if someone points that out!! Why?? Because you are from north india?? How idiotic that is!! Open your mind, my dear man!!
YOu only pose to like TFM but cannot accept any criticism of HFM singers/MDs. I am sure you don't know one full song (or speak) in tamil with the entire meaning. My tamil friends in this discussions can see that very clearly I think. So you are only tolerated because of goodness of your "oh-so-southie" saathis, even if you dominate all discussions or post rubbish and stupid examples from HFM all the time!! But you can never accept that truth I am convinced!
Vanakam to my tamil posters. Al-vidah doston!

Yes sure I am going to add to my resume the bad quality of breaking promises and therefore posting a reply to your pureile reaction above.
This is TFM page but every time it is you who intorduce LM or AB or so and so in all your posts. Why you do so?? It is a sign of your arrogance and bias IMO to show off your HFM knowledge in a community of southern indians!!
What nonsense! Shows that you haven't been through several of my posts with even half an eye open. If there have been HFM-related discussions, I participated and there have been plenty of those. And what have YOU been doing? Aren't you including unnecessary Hindi words in your sentences? Aren't you talking about VJs HINDI songs? Aren't you talking in general about HFM here?
And two posts above you said:
I also have read how maturely he praised you for your ethusiasm for dakshini music.
ROTFL! Why this stupendous 180 degree shift of opinions??
But you cannot face the dirty political games LM AB played to rule HFM, if someone points that out!! Why?? Because you are from north india?? How idiotic that is!! Open your mind, my dear man!!
You mentioned one list of singers...I said I have read articles by them praising LM,AB and saying that LM,AB were friendly and helpful to them. Now who was unable to face the truth? So who needs to open his mind?
YOu only pose to like TFM but cannot accept any criticism of HFM singers/MDs
ROTFL again! Why do you consider appreciation of TFM and protest against unsavoury remarks against Northern artists to be mutually exclusive?
Also, as usual (being a true LM,AB detractor) you will conveneintly overlook and avoid "uncomfortable" questions. Why did you miss
a)My feeling that IR is probably India's greatest MD
b)My praise for ARR
c)My praise for Chitra, PS and Janaki (who has often been maligned on this thread)
d)My appreication and lavish praises for Vani Jairam's enthralling performance in many Tamil songs
e)My statement that TFM retained its classical roots in the 80s unlike HFM
f)My liking for Hindi songs by Hariharan, Kavita and Shankar Mahadevan (and the mother tongue of each one of these is Tamil)
g)My appreciation for K V Mahadevan, and MSV-TKR(and my preference for MSV-TKR over L-P,S-J)
h)My preference for Carnatic classical.
I am sure you don't know one full song (or speak) in tamil with the entire meaning.
Unlike you, I can appreciate music in a language I might not know. Thats why I like songs in Kashmiri, Punjabi shabads, songs in Tamil,Telugu, operettas in Italian, Spanish.
But you can never accept that truth I am convinced
Of course, I can never accept your perception of the truth.
