A little knowledgeable fan of music will easily identify the subsequent beats of any IR song after the first few words. His beats are the most boring and routine.
Frankly it is most amazing that his songs appeal to some people, given the monotony and non-imaginative nature of his songs.

In the first around 400 films, 80% of the songs of IR were with different original beats, so who is this ignorant author of this thread.
close this one also, i say ;;--)

Of course, this thread should be closed.
Ilayaraja should not be revealed and his weaknesses should never be publicised.
Frankly guys, IR is a very mediocre musician who used shrewdness and cunningness to rein for a while.

I was just passing by and noticed this thread and I agree. I'm not Indian and am not an expert on Tamil music but I've listened to quite a few songs and am a fan of SOME of it. A.R. Rahman and Deva are usually quite good, but Ilayaraaja I avoid, exactly becasue I find his stuff boring with popish pretensions, and wonder why he seems so popular. JMO

Hi Guys, IR has been giving some quality music for quality film. latest is Julie Ganapathy, i heard this Ennakku Piditha Padal sung by Vijay Yesudas / Sheraya Gowsal. Tunes is melodius. Raja realy gave a good melody for all the songs?
OUTSIDER Ilaiyaraja's music is very different from others. His music fits exactly the movies, he gives that the director wamnts for the situation not like others. Other music director score's music and driector fits them into movie. If you watch the movie, you'll love his scores and background music. SETHU, KASI, SOLLA MARANTHA KATHAI, AZHAGI, FRIENDS, EN MANA VAANIL, RAMANA are some example of movies

Ok, I managed to track down some of the IR songs that previous posters mentioned and will now give my expert opinion :) Some of the songs were decent and had some good beats or melodies starting to happen, but he always manages to put some cutsey cheesiness in his tunes. I do not like cheese in my music.
Let me illustrate an IR song:
bop-a-da-bop dee-da ... Lalalalalalalalala
bop-a-da-bop dee-da ... Lalalalalalalalala
.. CHEESE!!! ....
bop-a-da-bop dee-da ... Lalalalalalalalala
bop-a-da-bop dee-da ... Lalalalalalalalala
But some of the songs were already cheesy to begin with and occassionally adds something interesting, like this:
cheesy-cheese-chez-cheese
cheesy-cheese-chez-cheese
- Hey this is sorta interesting ..
- I like this part .. but wait ..
- here comes the cheese again!
cheesy-cheese-chez-cheese
cheesy-cheese-chez-cheese
Once again, based soley on hearing the music and on my own ears, it's just my opinion.

Outsider,
You can always leave out the cheese if you want. But there's butter, jello, marmalade spread and many other interesting stuff. And like what Rajkumar says, his music fits the movies exactly and he gives the director what he/she wants for the situation. He doesn't over do it nor does he want to impress for any commercial reasons like all the rest have been doing endlessly.
What you've listened to is just a tiny drop. There is a sea of wealth over there. You have to know and remember that this guy does not go for publicity gimmicks nor does he pull something suddenly and get close by to some high level directors or actors. He's a professional and he's a cool one at that.

IRs BACKGROUND MUSIC IS TOO GOOD IN RAMANA ...BUT OUTDATED....HE IS STRICTLY STICKING TO HIS 80S STYLE AND NOT AT ALL TRYING TO GO FOR SOPHISTICATED LATEST INSTRUMENTS....HE IS STOPPING THE GROWTH OF MUSIC PRESENTATION...AND EVEN TAKING IT BACK ....WHICH IS NOT HEALTHY FOR THE MUSIC WORLD..MANY TIMES HE CHANGED HIS PRESENTATION TO SOPHISTICATION ..LIKE IN KADHAL KAVYAM\(prashant, agastiyan)...BUT NOT ALWAYS...
U SEE ANBESIVAM MOVIE ...HOW SOPHISTICATED INSTRUMENTS VS HAS USED....WHY DONT IR LIKE LATEST HIFI INSTUMENTS ?? :(

Ambleen. Yes I understand that IR cuts his music to fit the movie. But I think that may be part of the problem. For instance, I was listening to an older IR song called Mani Osai, it was a pleasant melody, but then the lead singer starts *COUGHING* half way through the song and then it changes to some donkey jack-ass cheese music and then back to the singer coughing through the rest of the song. WTF?

I take that as a compliment. Well, I don't take no crap from crabs here. They give me a Prince Naseem and I give them back a Tyson or Holyfield killer.
When you get hit, some show their other cheek. But I give them my fist. We don't live in biblical days anymore especially when moron rats are on the loose.

Outsider,
Like I hinted before, if you've already noticed it and don't like it then stop that coughing when there are million others(IR songs) to soothe that cough.

Folks,
I happened to listen to one song from film Sethu today. Iam hearing it for the first time and the
rythm or beat of this song is real good and different.
The song is : Sikhada Sittondru

outsider.
two suggestions:
1. what that song in the movie
2. imagine yourself as a person dying of cancer (vomitting blood etc..) and singing that song.
now does that make sense to you?
(Dont ask me why would a dying person sing -- that qn goes to the director and not to the MD)
That song is one of the best in that movie. Nice tune with pleasant tabla beat and ofcourse a great performance by SPB (he is a good actor too, you know)

outsider, your bit on Maniosai Kettu turned me on. Yes I do find that coughing bit irritating. IR has also done this in:
1. Vaaraayo Unakke Saran- Mano coughs in the last pallavi
2. Uyire Uyire Urugathe- Yesudas coughs at the end of the 1st charanam
3. Naanthaanda Ippo Devadas- SPB coughs at the end of the 1st 2 lines of the 2nd charanam
4. Dharisanam Kidhaikkyatha- S Janaki coughs after 'Kannaa'
Then, there's that infamous 'Paasam... prema paasam..' by Gangai Amaran in the film Prema Paasam which has SPB coughing in quite a dramatic way.
Sorry, couldn't resist the temptation, having such a good ear for minute details of songs... :-)

btw, X, you'd know, what is the situation that leads up to 'Mani Osai Kettu'? Could we get some details that go beyond the song itself, into the film please? For one that has not seen Payanangal Mudhivathillai such as myself, any foreign sound in a song is disturbing. I'm just itching with curiosity.

X, Maniosai cough is legendary. SPB must have 'practiced' a lot for that. At the peak of the cough, Janaki pickup the tune, my god that gives a great soothing feeling to the song. SPB is not only a good singer but a great singer to the film situation, he is the person who pioneered songs with laugh, dialogues(I like chipi erukkuthu song- SPB says "beautiful"), crying, adaptation to singer style (eg. Rakkamma kaiya thattu - Rajini style "Indrikkum"), we can list so many of situational songs for IR/SPB kootani.

Well????? What's the situation for the song, X???? Is it 'Mike' Mohan on his deathbed at the climax????
Anyway, I was very flattered when Outsider shed light on this, I must say. I was afraid that I was the only DFer with an ear for coughing. (Boy, then would my user-name really have served its purpose!) Honestly, I didn't think ANYONE would have shed light on this subject, and I'd have to do it all myself. Anyhow, sorry for such a digression. After all, the title of this thread isn't 'Singers Coughing in Songs'. :-)))

While I was on a nostalgic trip today, I happened to listening to a song from 'Kadhalan' called 'Eraani Kurathaani Gobala'. This is relevant to this thread, the beats are very impressionistic, reflective of ARR's early days. The instrument appears to be 'Tabla'. Does anyone know who played the tabla for this song??
Also another doubt, is the reason for IR's reluctance to use natural percussion instruments due to the lack of good percussionists, now that most of the rhythm can be computer programmed. So who are the prominent percussionists available for film music these days comparable to Shivamani (another impressionist).
While part of my opinions maybe disguised to be provocative, please clarify my doubts.
