Guys, I am listening to swara.com songs of Illaiyaraja. Right now, I am kind of crying at the song Vetti Veru from Mudhal Mariyadhai. Is this creativity or sensitivity?

Kiru,
Thanks for your reply. It enlightened me a lot on the recording techiniques used by IR vs ARR.
I completely aggree with you on IRs natural percussion recordings like Karagattakaran. Its mind boggling composition by IR. Till date I have not heard such compositions from ARR.
The problem with IR is, he composes very nicely but does not allocate time and resources to get
his recording to the good quality.
Still IRs songs sound better than anybody else's because of the real instruments that he uses than
any software generated ones.

Hi folks
Any feedback on the song "rAman kadhai kelungal" (sippikkul muthu)
IMHO, IR had based this song on the Harikatha form being performed in temples. The line starting AhA veeranillaiyA was set in fast and slow tempo, which was liked by me very much. The picturisation was excellent by great KV and the mridangam was so nicely used in this song.
In "samaithu kAttuvOm" (unnAl mudiyum thambi), this song was written and composed by IR himself. He has brilliantly included the swaras in the song in each line (pAdu Vasantha, kudithu pArka rasanthA, Kalyani - saiva biriyani, etc). Any other songs are there like this?
Await your comments.

RajaFan,
Its really the combined creativity and sensitivity of IR to compose a song like Vettiver Vaasam. Especially the first interlude in a mind boggling melody which brings out the mood of the situation clearly.

Had a lovely bus-bus-bus hopping trip from Palakkad to Virudhunagar & back. Who said IR's popularity is on the wane? At least 70% of the songs that got played were IR nos.(though I should admit mostly old nos.)
I was stunned by some haunting nos in the bus from Madurai to VNR- full of Ramarajan style IR nos: Vasalile poosanippoo, Raasaththi manasile, Nee pogumidamellam....
What a lovely combination of limited orchestration (flute, set of violins, rhythm guitar, great tabla and interspersing of electrical piano - absolutely no synthetic sounds and noises) and lovley melodies!
The bus from Palani to Pollachi treated me with nos. like: Ayiram malargale, Kurinji malaril, azhagiya kanne, hey paadal ondru, samakkozhi... What lovely songs! Though one can listen to all these in the big CD player, it never gives the same amount of thrill like someone else showering on you!! (Like the comparison of IR and ARR by Kumudham arasu).
The last leg of journey was on a taxi (no bus at night from Pollachi to Palakkad) and even that fellow treated me with greats without asking for:
Raasathi onne, azhagu malarada, megam karukkaiyile, kathirundhu.., indraikku enindha, poova eduththu oru, kalai nerappoonguyil, un parvaiyil....
Oh, what a lovely melodious life we have enjoyed with those enchanting numbers!!!

Eden, I envy you. I am looking forward more of this earthy journeys back home and listen to the bhoomi in south Indian that still vibrates to the resonance of an IR or MSV melody. Please tell us more, please.

Hi Eden
You are right. I had had the same occuring to me a year and 1/2 back. I was in Kodai and I had hired a van to take me around Kodai. The guy played mostly IR songs allthrough (2 days). Of course he played some of the then recent songs(NON -IR). I talked to the van driver about IR and the current songs. It is only then I understood what IR meant to these people. They hold IR in great esteem. ARR is the best MD only to college students (I read in another DF - some magazines interviewing for the best MD). IR still lives in the heart of many people.

eden,
I had also some wonderful experience like this.
Once I was travelling from tholudur to trichy, and
they played so many lovely IR 70s songs, it made my trip so worthwhile to remember. The last time, I was in india, I travleed to madurai from madras, and in the local buses, they played some new songs.
ramesh,
I dont think ARR is just popular only among college students. Myself and so many people, i know grew up with IR music, but most of them love ARR music. Whenever I asked them what about IR,
the answer I got most of the time, is ya Ir is also good. So I dont go that far generalizing about ARR, as you would. What ever the interaction, I had with current youngesters ( k, I accept, im aging :-) ), they dont have any high
regards for IR. I still remember what my cousin, who is in high school now, told me about IR.
IR, ya I know, he is the one scroing music for
those ramarajan movies right. I felt so bad, but
that may be the reality down there. :-)

What about songs of Anjali?..
I think the beauty lies in the percussion, the rhythm. Each and every song is fabulous yet bearing no semblance with the other songs.
Can anyone in the forum enlighten me more about the songs in Anjali? Like the techniques, etc...

IR's music has the real "tamil man vaasanai" - that explains why hes so popular with the masses as mentioned by ramesh ganesan and eden. Esp the songs in IR-Bharathiraja combination have been wonderful. Mudhal mariyadhai songs are so refreshing!

Jan 99 I had a chance to watch the movie 'kaadhalukku mariyaathai' in poLLaachchi [wht theatre was tht? opp. shakthi lodge?]! Believe me, people were eagerly waiting with their slippers in hands [yes in hands!], esp.ly economical ticket categories! Once "ayyaa voodu" started, the fanatic-junta was clapping the cheppals, rythamically.. And ofcourse, the crowd vanished once the song is over! But it was an enthralling incident to realize, how IR was still living in the minds of poor sector!

Anjali, IMO, is too hot to handle. Only experts like Srikanth can throw some light on it. BTW, if you want to listen to all songs from Anjali visit:

"thulli thull" (Sippikkul Muthu) song of Tamil and Telugu versions had different first interludes, although the tune and second interlude were the same. Anybody can cite some more examples like this?
Thanks.

Hi
I was hearing to Guru Charanam from Guru. Sometimes, I feel it like a chorus in the Christian song. Same is the case with some of his devotional songs also (Geetanjali I & II). Can somebody enlighten me? I don't have any musical knowledge. Pls correct me if I am wrong.

Guru sharanam has a couple of instrumental pieces similar to `Devan thiruchabai malargale' which has some church choirlike music; hence one'll be tempted to link it with a devotional song. In any case, just listen to the starting piece of Kadal Ovium in A.O. You may not hear such perfect playing of choir anywhere in TN!

venkatesh,
may be these are the left overs of those "D.Raja" (D for david !!!) days :-))))

Its probably the use of organ which gives the impression that is christian, in character.

Devan Thiruchabai Malargaley & Naan Pesa Vandhen were the songs which pulled me to IR in his early days. Every movie of his had something new and one eagerly waited for the songs to be played on Vividh Bharati.
Devan Thiruchabai started with tambura playing a dominant role in the begining (never done before IMO) at the end the violins elevating the song with the churchbell/organ striking a second late-stuff I had not heard before in TFM.

IR's short melody lines and faster notes will become history very sooon!!! Think about this folks. I am worried actually
I feel that ESK is greater than I thought and you think and with Kadhaalaar dinam, this is going to surely make an impact on the music world to come. KD is potentially strong to erase IR out from anyone's memories for sometime to come. Seriously and hopingly not shockingly to you all... After Minsara Kanavu which is a monumental change from our IR type algorithm music, KD is bringing back MSV style long melody lines and we can expect a national award going again to MR. ARR. Who knows they might say take the Padma Bhushan.
