addendum to Saravanans posting:
'Thyagam' was a remake of 'amaanush'(*ing Bengali super * Uttam Kumar and Sharmila Tagore). The flood scene in the climax sequence was a highlight of the film. Shyamal Mitra's 'dil aisaa kisi ne mera thodaa'(KK) is a popular song. IRs 'nallavarkellaam' shares a similar structure and beat , including the starting humming, but the song changes totally in the charanam.
Saravanan, which role did fatafat play? I dont remember her character at all.

Ramki- Thanks for that info- Balaji padamna remake illamala?!
Fadafat J comes as a village belle- naturally dressed sans upper accompaniments to her saree :-) Actually Lakshmi gives credence to rumours of a Sivaji-Fadafat J illicit relationship and this is one of the reasons for breaking up her affair with him- but later she comes to know that that was mere smoke with no fire.

Thiyaham was the second and last movie in Balaji-IR combination. Good songs. Vasandha Kaalak Kolangal song is one the good songs of SJ's solos in IR's music. She has done a great job. I like "Nallavarkellam" song very much and then this song follows. Then comes Then Mallip Poove. Other songs are ok.

SJ is incredibly expressive in this song, not just good. Picked by IR as one of his 9 favourite songs(Rajaangham site) the reason being that it was the one liked by KD in his music.

Got a chance to listen to one of my favourite song after a long time. Nice tune and SJ's singing are indeed great. There is a beautiful flow all through the song. Its still beautiful when a girl sings this song without any accompanying music. Such an occassion enjoyed by me, at a time when the movie was released is still evergreen in my mind. This SOTD has rekindled it.

SOTD selection kku ethavathu "Algorithm" irukka?Romba "Fuzzy Logic" a irukke!
Thyagam - another "young" Sivaji! But Nallavarkellam is an oustanding one. When i recorded Sivaji s thathuva padalgal that was the only one from IR which made it into the collection.
SJ ,IMHO,sounds screechy in both this song and the duet.(SJ rasigarkal Mannikka!)
Sivaji-fatfat ? Illcit relationship?Vera etho Platonic...nnu solvangale?

Classic song in Thyagam is "nallavarkeelam satchigaL undu rendu mana-satchi". The picturization with the background of "the spread of the waves in the sea". Beautiful Lyrics and involved rendition by TMS.
Sivaji looked so pale in the whole movie [veLLakeNna kudicha madiri moonji :-)], but he acted with ease on a simple script. I remember Sivaji and Lakshmi paired in an earlier movie "Unakkaga naan" with one more most youthful pair Gemini Ganesan and V.Nirmala. Padayappa was another movie of this pair.
Noteworthy couple of "Tyagam" is Thengai sreenivasan (as crooked minded SasthrigaL) and his 'obviously good-hearted' Manorama. They added good comedy masala to the mega hit movie.

Song of the Day: manamE thottaa chinungi from thottaa chinungi.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/maname.rm
- Sung by Hariharan. Music for this film was done by a couple of new-comers, Phil and Jerry. They came from Australia, if I remember right. This was an amazing song, simple orchestration and giving Hariharan a lot of scope. The duo faded away, unfortunately.
- Phil and Jerry also composed a remix album, Dance Natyam (wasn't it the one that had the banana boat song?). Ramya Ramya was another good song in the movie thottachinungi.
- Raagam Mohanam.
- Lyrics written by Athiyamaan, the director of this movie.

A query: I recently heard a song by Shoba mudgal in TF song. the song is really good and excellent pronounciation by SM. Can some one give details about this movie/music director. I heard it is a mamooty movie.

on: Tue Jul 15 01:25:45 EDT 2003
Speaker, it could be "vaarai en thozhiye" from Arasiyal, a Mammooty film that cames years back. Shuba's pronunciation was undecipherable but the song was very good. Vaa Saki was also from that film.

Song of the Day: kannan kOyil paravai ithu from Akka.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/kannankoyil.rm
- Saravanan writes on this number that is dear to him:
'Kannan kovil paravai ithu' by Vani Jairam from the film Akka. Music: MSV.
‘Full many a flower is born to blush unseen,
And waste its sweetness on the desert air’
I can never, never understand why this magnificent song did not hit the
popularity charts.
Mathura Films’ Akka –1976, starred KR Vijaya and Jaiganesh. I remember
seeing a record of the film, the cover showing KRV sitting in a cutcheri
pose. Maybe she tried to do another MRB? Can anyone who has seen the film
throw more light on the story?
Kannan kovil paravai ithu
Karunai mannan deepam ithu
AnnaL kadalin odam ithu
Adhu thaan ippodhu paaduvathu
Brindavanathin mullai ithu
PerumaaL thoLin kiLLai ithu
Krishna nadhiyin veLLam ithu
adhu thaan ippodhu paaduvathu
Devaki maindhan adimai ithu
andha devanukkE ini udamai ithu
Yadhava Madhavan maalai ithu
adhu thaan ippodhu paaduvathu
Gopiyar paadum geetham ithu
Gokula veenayin naadham ithu
Arjunan ariyaa Geethai ithu
adhu thaan ippodhu paaduvathu
Bama Rukmani paadham ithu
Paarijaatham vazhangiyathu
Avanai nambiya paavai ithu
adhu thaan ippodhu paaduvathu—
A great Cutcheri song, with the usual musical accompaniments. VJ at her
classical best, her training assisting her in no small measure. The entire
song is punctuated by spellbinding and swift swara sojourns (especially
towards the end) and amazing alaapanais. The brighas are reminiscent of the
great S Varalakshmi in her prime. Also mention must be made of the subtle
variations in each repetition of the refrain ‘Athu thaan ippodhu
paaduvathu’.
From my early childhood, I have heard this song spoken of in awe by many
learned persons, including my violin master (whose only nemesis in his long
line of illustrious pupils was yours truly : -)). I have it from some
classical buffs that this song is a wonderful ragamalika, which MSV had
masterfully woven in hamsadhwani, charukesi, aarabhi, dhanyasi, behaag----
Definitely among VJ’s best songs. In fact I would not hesitate to rate this
right along with ‘Ezhu swarangalukkul’ and ‘Sugamaana ragangalae'.
Many may recognise the similarity in structure, which this song shares with
the pathos filled ‘Deviyin kovil paravai ithu, thirunaal ettrum deepam
ithu’- SJ, from ‘Avalukkendru Oru Manam’. Both songs are by Kannadasan and
tuned by MSV. While the line ‘Athu thaan ippodhu paaduvathu’ recurs at the
end of each verse in this song, the corresponding last line in ‘Deviyin
Kovil’ is ‘Kanneer ezhuthum kavithai ithu’. And most lines end with ‘ithu’
in both songs. However, while ‘Deviyin Kovil’ is an emotional cascade,
‘Kannan Kovil’ is a classic, soulful Krishnaganam, which Kannadasan created
with poetic lyrics in ode to his favorite God.
Says Kannadasan, in an eloquent tribute to VJ in his Sandhithen Sindhithen –
“Muraiyaana sangeetha payirchi ullathaal eliya Carnadagathil Vaniyin kural
olikkum pothu athan sugame alaathi. ‘Ezhu swarangalukkul’ paadal engae
kettaalum naan mei marandhu nindru viduvaen. Bhanumathi, Varalakshmi,
Sooryakumari aagiyorin kuralppol Vaniyin kuralum thanithanmai vaaindhadhu.
Andha oliyil oru kudumba sugam irukkirathu. Ella baashaigalilum avatrinudaya
dhwani thavaraamal ucharikkum vallamai petra Vani oru aayutkkaala padigayae.
Peyar porutham palarukku amaiyaathu- Vanikku amaindhirukkirathu. Vani
unmayilalaye oru Kalaivanithaan.”

sabesan (& R),
>>>> Ullasam came way back in 1997 right ? Did manickam come b4 that itself ?
Yes, I am 100% sure, Manickam was the first 'album' released by IR (Even the cassette cover said this !), But his first released movie was 'Enakkoru magan piRappaan'
KR's first three movies had some good songs, But he couldn't really make any big impact in TFM, till he gave one complete album in 'Ullaasam', Then he got two big movies - Naam Iruvar, Namakku Iruvar AND kaadhalaa kaadhalaa ... then a looooong gap, appuRam Vaanjinathan DummDummDumm, Album ... his bad luck continues till date eventho' DDD was a HIT !
