As legend has it, IR was signed for a couple of Hindi movies soon after Sadma. Sippy, the maker of Sholay, took IR as the MD. He wanted IR to get 'inspired' from some English number, which IR refused to do. Promptly Sippy had replaced someone else as the MD. IR filed a case against Sippy. And Sippy made sure that IR never got a chance in HFM. Do not know what happened to the case, but IR lost his market (!!!!) in HFM. I read this in a Telugu magazine quite some years back. This topic is to discuss this and also whether IR would have made it big in HFM. What are his plusses and minuses in HFM and how would Hindi music lovers reacted to IR kind of music. No personal attacks please.

Hindi film music died with the days of mohd.rafi, lately i can never say any good hindi film has good music, raaja could not be a success bcos of the lack of knowledge the audience and film makers had of music, but arr was given a lot of hype which lead to his success, also a reason arr copies english tunes which the hindi film world prefers.anu malik will be 50 times richer and popular world wide than raaja, but touch ur heart and tell me can u ever compare him with raaja,he can be compared to the guy who supplies tea for raaja cos even he will know better music being associated with raaja.i remember a frend saying years back,a song from the movie beta i guess ,dhak dhak ,he asked can raaja ever compose a tune like that, but he did not know that it was a original raaja tune lifted from the telegu movie jagadeka veerudu adhiloka sundari, which released almost 2 years earlier than beta released.so as a raaja fan iam happy that he did not waste time in hfm,wat can a sane man do in a world of insanes.
padmasri was given to arr,can someone tell me raaja doesnt deserve it,its all politics and there are millions of people who breathe raajas music like me,thats his success,he doesnt need any recognition.

that's all true...but the BG Score isn't upto the mark....If u want to know what a good BG Score is pls watch Idhayathai thirudAdhEy or Satya (sandeep chowta)....Most of the Hindi MDs never used to compose the BG Score...They generally give it to Raveendra jain or some low profile guy to do the BG Score....U may check that in any hindi movie titles...u will know.

Hope you know that there was a technician s strike in 1970s.In order to complete the BGM for the movies someone developed a library of sorts using earlier film sound recordings /BGM and using some non-regular musicians play certain standard BGM loops.
So most of the Hindi movies never had a "Full re-recording".You can find these loops used even in TV serials of DD days.
Even after the strike was over these loops were used for most of the films.Only some Big producers/Directors like Subhash Ghai had a full length Rerecoding/BGM arranged for their movies.AFAIK the rerecoding using the loops would require Rs.40,000 in 1990s.
As mentioned by S ,musicians like Ravindra Jain,Babla,Viju Shah,Anand Raj Anand used by do the BGMs.
In TFM it was never the case and even the small budget movies had the BGMs/Rerecording by MDs.
S ,
Sandeep Chowta !...he virtually stands on the keyboards during important scenes.

OISG
I hope you are not pulling a fast one here!
i always thought that the BGM pieces were from a library of sorts,in fact, we just call it library music with titles ranging from letter opening scene to father turning to talk to his son scene, etc....
I dint know that it was bcos of a strike.

HFM, in general, depends a lot on songs and songs only... BG, in almost 90% of the movies, are secondary... i hardly remember a hindi movie which stood out for BG... (or can anyone educate me on this? :-) ).. as OISG rightly pointed out, i can realise the same 'loops' which were used in the TV serials "Ramayana/ Mahabaratha" used in N number of movies in Hindi... (ada.. namma Ganga Yamuna Saraswati-la kooda adha pottu theikkaraangappaa.:)) )
songs play an integral part of a movie.. agreed... but songs alone cannot make a movie... u shd hv a good story-line and a good BG to back it up... now that HFM has started realising that BG work plays an important part (or still they havent? )... guys like Sandeep Chowtha are getting rave reviews for their work in Satya, Asoka, Company and the like... hope this trend continues.. even our gud old ARR is praised for BG for Bombay, Lagaan.
eh.. seems that we're going out of the thread?? :-)

There used to be this movie review program(CHalo Cinema?) on SONY I think, hosted by Kunal Kohli.
Previewing Hey Ram he was and about the music this is what he said
IR is a legend,phenomenon,etc etc...
To even compare anybody else with IR is giving the other guy too much respect

Sandeep Chowta is another classic example of how a person gets neglected in HFM. Except for Ram Gopal Varma (another southie!!!!), no one even considers him for music direction.

If thats ur opinions, then its fine. But there has to be a solid reason why u say its not "upto the mark". Again, if it doesnt fit into ur tastes, its quite okay with me. But it does fit into my tastes very much.
BTW I am not at all talking about present day HFM at all. I shall hunt out a link wherein IR is all praise for Salilda's BGM...give me some time.
Also, my personal favourites amongst all composers are IR and Salilda. But its just that I like IR only a small bit more than others. I am not one of those several people here who feel IR is a hundred times superior to everyone else. that IR was the best is true, but I dont think he is so much better than other composers that they are to be written off! Whether its songs or BGM or anything else.

Sandeep chowta was good in Satya. He may stand or dance on the keyboard :-), but the outcome was much better than any of the hindi movie MDs....U may pounce on me for this, but i have to say this...He's even better than arr in the BG score dept.
