In this thread, I want to highlight some of the songs from IR in the '90s which are brilliant but have in my opinion gone unrecognized because of the popularity of the movies. I would frequently play these songs to my friends who would not have heard of these movies before and they will be absolutely impressed by these songs. Pls. join in to contribute to this list.

hi people!
have any of you heard of this beautiful song "meetAda oru veenai" from the movie "PoonthOttam" released a couple of years back?
i would rate this song as IR's best ever. check out the interlude (esp 1st interlude timing)and instrumentation. Hariharan also has done super
I believe Hariharan took 14 hours to master the song!
Please listen to it and post comments...

Krishnan,
Great job, I waned to start this thread for a long time, I left India in 1995, and was out of reach for IR hits released from 1994 till 1996, it will be good if some body comes out with a excel file like how Hari/Eden did it couple of years ago for great 1000 songs of IR.
I do not know if any body listed "kattumarakkaran", released almost the same time as "paattu paadavaa", one of the great hits . Can any body tell me what combination of CD is availble with this movie.

Koonds,
Are u meaning "Kaathirundhen Thaniye" in Rasamagan by Krishnachander and Uma Ramanan? It is by IR only. Only the BGM for Rasamagan was KR!

Hi, Iam pained to tell you that there are many under recognized gems in raaja's kitty after 90's.
I feel he tried lots of off beat tunes during the aforesaid period. Somehow they failed to connect with the masses. Now Iam in the process of discovering these hidden treasure and my joy knows no boundaries :)
1. Kangalin vaarthaigal 1999
Alli sundaravalli - a catchy melody and I swear if only SPB had sung this it would have reached immortality.
2. mUTHU mUTHU POOKAL ALLI - ANOTHER offbeat, rythm oriented song , slightly erotic too
3. indha kaadhal - a frothy, sweet song and this song uses a shrill strange instrument in the pallavi and I have not heard this sound before.
Bhava kolai pannitaa indha nalla paatai
Manam virumbudhe unnai - a very different album from raaja. Listen to the wonderful, fresh melody in the 'illa vennir kaala panchami', emotively rendered by HH.
Manasa killi edukkiraa valli - is my pick. I can say it is a uniquely composed song in the TFM . At the beginning of the song, it sounds like a typical dappanguthu. But the moment swarnalatha starts 'maalaiyin manjal poosugira andhi endhan thozhi' the song dimension changes and the effect surely is dramatic. Thanks for mythila who has mentioned about this song in an old thread. Otherwise I would have never heard this song.
edho edho ny hariharan and sujatha is another melodious duet, sounding slighly classical

I've been visiting this thread many times, and now that I have brushed up on my knowledge of IR songs, I would like to add my input.
There's this one song in 'Endrum Anbudan' I really really like; it goes like 'Nilavu Vanthathu Nilavu Vanthathu'. It is sung by Mano and S Janaki, and is a terrific Hamsadhwani tune. Especially check out the final piece of the first interlude. The other songs in this film are also pretty good; for example, 'Chinanjiru Annakili' has really melodious interludes.
Also, in addition to 'Adho Antha Nathiyoram', in Ezhai Jaathi I also like 'Anbe Vaa Anbe Vaa', an emotionally charged number sung by Swarnalatha (or was it Minmini? Experts, pls. clarify). It's a really good example of high-intensity Mayamalavagowla raagam usage (as Vel probably would've called it if he had heard this song). Also, 'Ezhai Jaathi' sung by P Jayachandran and Chorus was on my lips for some time after I heard it. BTW, just a fun fact, in Ezhai Jaathi, all the songs are set to various minor scales; there isn't one instance of Kalyani, Sudhasaveri, or whatever other major scales we have.
In Raakkayil Koyil, which I would definitely consider an average album, there was one great song in 'Unthanin Paadal', sung by Mano and Swarnalatha. The song sounds like it could be attractive to us Indians and even to Westerners. The song I think is set to a rare raagam, Karnataka Khamas (the same as Koottathile Koyil Pura or Ponnil Vaanam).
In Sakkarai Devan, I thought all songs were quite good. Especially melodious and lilting are 'Thanneer Kudam Kondu' and 'Manjal Poosum Manjal Poosum.' I also found 'Paakku Konda Vethala Konda Hoi' very attractive; I think this is a *yuddha* song (for declaring war), sung by a nameless singer TS Raghavendra.
In Oru Oorile Oru Rajakumari, I thought 'Raja Rajathaan' and 'Vanthaal Vanthaal Rajakumari' were wonderful. 'Ethanai Naala' had some cool interludes, and 'Oru Maina Kunju' was melodious in parts. OTOH, I thought that 'Azhagu Nilaa Kaayum' and 'Kanmani Kaathal Vaazha Vendum' are way too run-of-the-mill to hear with an enjoying spirit!
In Thozhar Pandiyan, another good song is 'Manveettil Irunthaalum', a pathos song sung by Gangai Amaran... I think... set to Bhavapriya and/or Subhapanthuvaraali raagam. I liked this number even better than 'Enna Enna Kanavu' in Valli.

purv, 'nilavu vandhadhu' is a superb and quite a complex song to sing , set to Hamsadhwani.
My only grudge in these songs is Mano factor ;(
Enrum Anbudan has other good numbers like
manjal veiyil nerame - Mano
thulli thirindhadhoru kaalam - SPB
power pocchuda - a fun song by Mano
IR has also given some good songs post millennium . I rate these songs
as nothing lesser than his prior compositions though many would not have given a proper hearing to them.
Kannaa unnai thedugiren - I really wonder what bait the producer of this dabba movie
laid to get some amazing numbers
Koil mani kettenae by SwarnaL and UnniK is a classy song in Brindhavana saaranga
with western feel in beats and interludes
vanji kodi - this song has that sophistication and fine poise
The prelude itself sets the wesern ambience. This song has really tricky note
placements and is quite complex to sing. I should say Hariharan did a good job.
I really pity us listeners for that unwanted Bhava appendage. I was fascinated by the
excellent flute, guitar and sax accompaniment thruout.
rasathi rasathi penne - even though set to the usual mayamaalavagowlai,
has a very unique start.
Andaan adimai - Atleast 2 songs in this movie are captivating and have not been
heard by the junta
ennenna paadaa padutharaan - one would wonder if there's going to be anything fresh in
the overused Shivaranjini. But after hearing you could sense all the vinatge raja
music , replete with violins, flute, tabla, lilting melody in the tune .
undhan raajiyathil is a moving chorus song with raja's voice joining later. Though the basic tune is
in Gowrimanohari, the orchestration is all western classical oriented.
