Cinema Virumbi,
In that case, Kalaingyar broke the rules with "kadalalaimeedhu" which doesn't quite fit the sandham of "Maayavanaathan".
Maayavanaathan wrote several songs for CSJ. One of my favorites by this poet is "chiththirappoovizhi vaasalilae avar yaar vandhavaroa".
The song shows both Sivaji and Balaji out in the woods watching a tribal dance of some sort. Sivaji emotes instinctively and naturally while Balaji holds onto the tree and branch for props and poses, exhibiting the difference between an ordinary and a great actor.

CV/ Udhaya, I have also heard the history of 'Kaagitha odam' :)
But before he walked off in a huff, Mayavanathan did write another song for 'Marakka Mudiyuma'; sung by A.L. Raghavan, the song sparkles in its simple truths- 'vaanum nilamum veedu, kaatrum mazhaiyum unavu, kaalum kaiyum aadai- ezhai vaazhvu simple!'
Udhaya, 'Chithira poo vizhi vaasalile' is a great favorite of mine too :) Karunanidhi seems to have liked Mayavanathan's lines a lot. Even before Marakka Mudiyuma, he made Mayavanathan write 6 songs in Poompuhar, and the songs speak volumes of Mayavanathan's literary class- classic Thamizh lives and breathes in each of the 6 songs.
You must have heard PBS sing 'Azhagane malare arivaana porule' from Thendral Veesum--highly imaginative lines. Mayavanathan should have been given more opportunities. We are the losers.

Dear Balaji,
This song was pictureised nicely. Shivaji, Balaji, M.R. Radha, A. Karunanidhi participated in the song, though MV Rajamma, Savitri and Shasranammam were also present. It was a basically a song and dance sequence, when the Jamindars visit their folks. The folks/ tribals dance in a celeberation. The hero and supporting sang the song.
Music was Vis-Rama assisted by GK Venkatesh. GKV was the chrous singer and was enacted by M.R Radha. A. Bhimsing's favouratie dance mastes Chinni (Chinni Praksh's father) and Sampath chroegraphed as well danced. After this song, the story goes in different turning point (Tragedy) in the picture.
In this movie only gave the base for Shivaji and Balaji friednship, which went for their life time and with lot of quick, good remake movies. Ironically this was also based on the Bengali story. Most of the Bhimsingh and Shivaji movies are based on the Bengali novel or stories in those time.
I do not remember, who was the lyric. May be Ku Ma BA or Kannadasan. The lyric was so absorbing in nature.
Totally TMS- PBS combination was in the peak in this movie.
Regards,
B.P. Thiagarajan

Song of the Day: malarOdu nilavukku enna kObam from Dear Son Marudhu.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/malarodu.rm
- Sung by Chitra and Unnikrishnan. Music by Deva. A decent melody that Deva milked again in "kaadhalee kaadhalee" in Avvai Shanmughi. The is not much information on the film; I believe it starred Rahman and Soundharya.

I think the film was initially called Dear Son -'Marudhu' was an afterthought ( Not that its addition helped the film's prospects any) Sivakumar played Rahman's father. Nasser was also part of the cast. It was released in 1996 and perhaps enjoyed one week's morning show run in Thirivotriyur Odeon Mani and Chrompet Rakesh :)
Nice song, though!

Song of the Day: kaNgaL theendi from vaanam vasappadum.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/kangaltheendi.rm
Wish you all a happy new year! PuththaaNdu vaazhththukkaL!!
- I am yet to see a list of films that are going to be released for sure today. I guess I have to wait for Sun TV's 'puthuppaadal' in the morning to get an idea. More or less, the following films seem to be the race horses at the box office:
aaydha ezhuththu - Directed by ManiRathnam. *ing Madhavan, Surya and Siddharth. Music by A.R.Rahman.
New - Directed by S.J.Surya. *ing S.J.Surya and Simran. Music by A.R.Rahman.
Gilli - Directed by Dharani. *ing Vijay and Trisha. Music by Vidyasagar.
Vaanam Vasappadum - Directed by P.C.Sreeram. *ing Karthik Kumar and Poongothai. Music by Mahesh.
I am not sure of the details of other movies like suLLaan, manmathan etc.
- Vaanam vasappadum was the last movie for Mahesh, who passed away after a long fight with cancer last year. The songs in the film are all very impressive. Today's SOTD is sung by Hariharan and Sujatha, to the background an enchanting sax. Check it out!

Song of the Day: senthAmaraiyE senthEnidhazhE from puguntha veedu.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/senthamarai.rm
- Saravanan writes:
‘senthamaraiyE sendhEnidhazhE’ from pugundha veedu. Sung by A.M.Raja & Jikki. Lyrics by Vichitra. Music by Shankar-Ganesh.
Sri Navaneetha Films’ Pugundha Veedu- 1972 was produced by Subramaniya Reddiar and directed by Pattu. It starred AVM.Rajan, Ravichandran, Lakshmi, Chandrakala, Savitri and others.
Ravichandran and Chandrakala are Savitri’s children, and hail from a humble family. AVMR and Lakshmi are a rich brother and sister. Predictably, Lakshmi and Ravichandran fall in love with each other, and so AVMR comes forward to marry Chandrakala, to pave the way for Ravichandran to marry Lakshmi. The two pairs look all set for a life of marital bliss.
However, while Chandrakala soon earns the love of AVMR, Lakshmi starts bickering for petty issues--she finds the impecunious circumstances of her husband’s house galling. Miniscule irritants slowly widen the chasm. At this juncture, Savitri is diagnosed with Tuberculosis. This is the last straw for Lakshmi, who pesters Ravichandran to send his mother away. And when Ravichandran steadfastly refuses, she returns in pique to her brother’s house. Observing AVMR and Chandrakala at close quarters, she gradually learns that the key to marital happiness lies in adjustments, understanding and affection. The final revelation that an old leper in their outhouse is none other than their father melts her hardened heart, and she returns to her pugundha veedu, a chastened, changed person.

S-G’s music was an important catalyst to the film’s success. There were 5 songs:
Maadi veettu ponnu Meena kodi veettu pakkam ponaa- TMS (Vaali)
Naan unnai thedugiren naal thorum paadugiren- PS (Vaali)
Neeye sollu engey endru angey naan varavo- TMS & PS (Vaali)
Senthamaraiye sendhenidhazhe- AMR & Jikki (Vichitra)
Kannan pirandha velaiyile andha Devaki irundhaal kavalile- PS (Vaali)
This song featured the happily married AVM Rajan and Chandrakala.
Over the years my attempts to elicit information about the lyricist Vichitra have been in vain. I don’t know if he/she has written any other film song, but this one song of Vichitra did become immensely popular. Even in the late 70s, when I started listening to the radio, this song was played often, and always with the enigmatic announcement- ‘Paadaalasiriyar: Vichitra’

‘Unnaiyum, un paataiyum romba pidichirukku. Unnai kalyanam pannikka aasaippadaren. Sammadhama?’- This is what AM.Raja wrote in Jikki’s notation sheet as they were rehearsing for the song ‘Azhagu nilaavin bavaniyile amaithi konjum iravinile’ (Maheswari/1955). Jikki was startled at this unexpected proposal, but after demurring initially, she gave her acceptance. And the entire film world joyously joined in the celebrations, for weren’t AMR and Jikki the uncrowned King and Queen of tfm in the 50s?
The early years of marriage were happy ones, both personally and professionally. But AMR, always a person with attitude problems, deep-rooted eccentricities and insecurities, and given to hallucinations of imaginary slights and unfounded suspicions, gradually allowed these complexes to take over his better senses. And thus not only his metier both as a mellifluous singer and as a talented MD came to an abrupt untimely halt, the pitiable Jikki too had to sacrifice her soaring career and stay at home.
It was after a long hiatus that Jikki’s enchanting voice was heard once again, and the MDs who called her were mindful of AMR’s foibles, and were careful to give her only female duets initially, or at the most, duets with AMR. Jikki kicked off this second innings with two female duets in 1970: ‘Azhagu mugam pazhagu sugam’ (Sorgam/with SJ/MSV) and ‘Kannan varuvaan indru Kannan varuvaan’ (Kannan Varuvaan/with PS/S-G). Some other female duets that came her way in the early 70s were ‘Manjalum thandhaal malargal thandhaal’ (Thenum Paalum /1971/with SJ/MSV), ‘Thalai vaazhai ilaippottu’ (Naan Yaen Pirandhen/1972/with SJ/S-G), ‘Kanna pesum kannaal’ (VeettuMapillai/1973/with PS/AMR) and ‘Poomaalai ondru’ (Pathu Maadha Bandham/1974/with PS/S-G).
And as for AMR, his second innings began a year later- in 1971. And it was V.Kumar who coaxed him to come out of his self-imposed exile and sing the lilting ‘Mutharame un oodal ennavo’ (Rangaraattinam/ with LRE). A wonderful part of this second phase was that AMR also got to compose music for 2 films: Veettu Mapillai- 1973 & Enakkoru Magan Pirappaan- 1975. Some of the songs that AMR sang in the 70s were: ‘Chinna kannane’ - Thaikku Oru Pillai/1972/S-G, ‘Malare o malare’ & ‘Rasi nalla rasi’ (with Jikki)- both from Veettu Mapillai/1973//AMR, ‘Oruvan oruthi thunai serndhuvittal’ - Veettukku Vandha Marumagal/1973/with Jikki/S-G, ‘ Edhai kettpadho edhai solvadho’ - Pathu Maadha Bandham/1974/ with Jikki/ S-G, ‘Manathukku theriyum’ (with Jikki) & ‘Roja malaraippole’ (with PS) both from Enakkoru Magan Pirapaan/ 1975/ AMR, ‘Enada kanna indha pollathanam’ -Anbu Roja/1975/ with PS/S-G, ‘Ananda illam’ (with PS) & ‘En deivame’ –both from Ithu Ivargalin Kadhai/1976/V.Kumar.
This second coming of Jikki extended for many more years, from ‘Kaadhalennum Kaaviyam’ (Vattathukkul Sathuram/ 1978/IR) to ‘Vanna vanna metteduthu’ (Senthamizh Paattu/1993/ MSV-IR), she got to sing some noteworthy songs. We’ll dwell at length upon this phase of Jikki’s career another time.
So listen to this bewitching duet by a pair of nightingales---quirky nightingales who inexplicably stilled their song when spring was beckoning, and who came out to sing late in autumn--a few lingering songs till the onset of the inexorable winter.
