not sure if this has been mentioned before..... does anyone remember a very old song (hindi) - "kilaaylaee kilaaylaee, aooo aoooo, kilaaylaee" from the movie "TARZAN" (i think its Tarzan).... Gentleman's "Paakadhey paakadhey" sounds exactly similar to this...... i have no pointers to the hindi song - does anyone know about the song ?

Karthik S,
The YSR number may be an inspiration or a pure co-incidence .... I want to give the benefit of doubt to the MD :-)
BTW, this is the only song in JS which I skip whenever I listen to this album :-)

Karthik, I can not restrain from asking this. Sorry! What if the film song resembles or template of a carnatic song? Do you wish to classify that under this category??

Flifo:
I think I'd look at it like open source and since there's nobody to claim ownership and thereby prove any guilt, I think its ok.
For instance Rahman had tweaked the Arunagirinathar composition 'naada vindu kaladhi' (senjurutti raagam) pretty well for the Gentleman song 'en veettu thottathil'. I'd not call something like that, a lift.
- From: Vj (@ 61.11.78.136)
on: Mon Apr 29 04:13:22 EDT 2002
that same arunagirinadhar composition was used by IR as "Sundari neeyum sundaran nyaanum" (MMKM)... IR modified the song whereas ARR used that straightaway...!!!
"Paalnila" (or sounding something similar to that) trash from a more-trash-than-thou movie "Kaamarasu" - lifted straight from "Venkata smaraami" divine song. god bless SAR

Vj:
Just because 'naada vindu kaladhi' is apparent in 'en veetu thottathil' you cannot call it a 'straight away' lift.
Also, just 'cos 'sundari neeyum' and 'naada vindu' are based on the same raagam, you cannot say IR used this song to compose his'!
It just happens that both the songs are based on the same raagam. The onus of proving a lift gets lost here since we are taking refuge in the raagams. This is precisely Flifo's point when he asked such a question (I think)...that this a grey area and proof is a problem unless its a bloody direct lift like that of SAR's! :-)

In "yen veetu song" ARR had already given the explanation in some interview. The dir wanted to have a braminical atmosphere and a song best suited for that is non other than "nadha vindhu".
But, ARR modifies that song in charanam with hamsadwani and Shakarabharanam, just keeping the pallaivi as nadha vindu just for signature purpose.

Deva has lifted Kenny G's 'Against doctor's order' - an instrumental - to compose a full fledged song! The song was 'Poove nee adava'. The similarity might not become apparent initially, but when you do trace it out, you tend to go...'hey...oh no...' and so on! Unfortunately, after a lot of search I still couldn't manage the Tamil song's audio clip! If anybody's got this song (any format), please send it to me/ let me know!

Murugavel has copied Thenmerku PAruvakaatru in Eh Nee ROmba Alagai Irukke.
ARR tends to just use loops to compose his music.
ARR sucks big time!

The traditional Italian folk tune, 'Tarantella' (usually accompanies the dance of the same name) seems to have inspired 2 Hindi songs. The S D Burman version in 1954 from the movie Taxi driver - 'Chahe koi khush...' and the Shankar Jaikishen version in 1956 from Raj Kapoor's Chori chori - 'Aaja sanam'. The SDB version was a pretty direct inspiration with a very similar tempo like the original. Its the Shankar Jaikishen version that has a rather slow tempo and a more coherent melody added to it, which makes a fantastic inspiration!
The reason why I posted it here is this!
I also felt that the popular Chandrababu song of the 50s (or was it the 60s?), 'Buthiyulla manitharellam...' (Film: Annai, Music: R Sudarsanam) resembled the Tarantella to some extent (it does take a drastic turn right in the first line, but still sounds similar!!) What do you think?
Listen to all the 4 songs in my site...

CF.. can you tell what song or BG in Rojakoottam you say is lifted from Anumalik?
I just hate Rojakoottam, the album. Sounds damning like a "hindi-album-with-mediocre-compositions", right from "anna salayil.. to apple penney". and not to mention that a part of "apple penney" is from "pardes" (meri mehbooba).
Like you, i too hv high regard for BW after his Amarkalam/Pandavar Bhoomi... but hmm.. lets c..
Its my damn opinion.

have you heard a song called pookkal sindhungal, konjum deva sandhangal-this song came way back in 83?sing it at slightly slowertempo, and presto, you get musthafa musthafa.I dont think M has been copied. This song was famous because it was written by kalimuthu who was a minister at that time.

I listened to a song 'Idho Ingu' From movie 'Sooryodhayam' ... I am not sure about the MD, But dhool.com says its IR (Refer to the below link to listen to the song)
http://www.dhool.com/cgi-bin/display.pl?order=title&start=120&offset=20&query=composer%20like%20'Ilayaraja'&prevq=composer%20like%20'Ilayaraja'
This song is sung by SPB and Mano (Thats one reason I wanted to listen to this 'unknown' song :-), Don't know when it was released, But the chorous part in this song is almost ditto of the chorous in 'UNnai thinam thedum thalaivan' song from 'Uzhavan Magan'
Can somebody listen to the song and confirm, Is it really an IR song ?

A 'brand new' lift for today! Tamil composer Dhina is more known for his title song in the Tamil TV serial 'Chitti'. He did debut in a mediocre 'Middleclass Madhavan' starring Prabhu and is probably looking forward to his score for current craze Vikram's next movie 'King' to propel him into big league! A song from the audio-just-released King is a blatant lift of Sting's 'A thousand years' from his 1999 album, Brand New Day! The song goes, 'kadhalagi kadhalagi'!
