ROTFL...Couldnt get that song anywhere! And when I did a search for neela malargal in google it shows the composer as IR in many sites!

Neela malargaL has one more very good song. The song is by KJY and VJ(?). The song is idhu iravaa pagaLaa? Superb song. It is very IRish. Even i thought the MD of the film is IR. Only from this forum i came to know that the MD is MSV.
But Karthik S, i would say indeed peNNalla peNNalla oodhaapoo and paesummaNi muththu rojakkaL are almost one-to-one.
But sorry, even i could not find that song on the net.

Karthik
I did the search yesterday and saw that many have credited IR for the song Iravaa pagalaa.
Paavam(ee) pasanga. :)
But WhyNot mentioned in another thread that you had told her that both songs are not similar?

But there was an interesting discussion about this song in this forum. Check it out here:

Moreover in this thread http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/16062.1544.08.57.28.html Ramki says that Mano and he have uploaded this song in their site http://msomasun.tripod.com/ . But it seems the site has moved to http://raresongs.newtfmpage.com
which is "temporarily down". So we are back to square one.
May be Ramki & Mano can throw some light on this.

I listened to the song "Azhkadlil " from Ragam thedum pallavi a few days back.
the starting music runs very similar to "Pasamalare ,Anbil Vilaintha Vasa Malare".
The song gives you the same feel like " Sochenge Thume Pyaar " from Deewana.(Tamilised again by Deva in Aha!)The raga is the same,Kalyani. But i feel the songs are very close...ok. ..inspired.

The 'cham chiki cham' kind of chorus in the beginning of Neela Malargal's pesum mani muthu is very similar to the classic oldie 'Chim chim cher'ee' in the movie Mary Poppins. There are 2 hindi versions of this song and one tamil version (Veda's 'boom boom maattukkaran' in Adhey kangal). The tune wavers a bit towards the end, but the structure is similar.
This similarity as 'similar' to pesum mani sounding like pennalla. But pennalla and the mary poppins dont sound similar. Phew!

In addition what I said in my last msg, both pesum mani muthu and the Mary Poppins song are aimed at chindren (with probably a group of kids watching the song too, in the movie). I remember kids laughing in the neela malargal song after one of the initial chorus IIRR. And moreover, both sound similar in their choice of chorus words 'chim' and cham'! So the chances of MSV getting inspired (partly of course) to create that initial chorus in Neela malargal is very very high.
You could hear the Mary Poppins number in my site - 'Jatin Lalit' page - 5th listing! And also in the 'Tamil - Others' page - 16th listing.

Some may find this interesting. From a 1998 ARR chat transcript:
"Siv (Mon Aug 17 1998 13:36 IST)
Mr Rahman, I thought you wanted to clear up the controversies surrounding the following -- do you think that the usage of synthesized sound makes a song seem less creative. For example, with systhesized beats, other artistes could have used the same beats. in this case, listeners may mistakenly think that the whole song was copied. Like the rhythm in Telephone manipol from Indian (many of my friends in the US commented that the song sounds like 'I saw the sign' from Ace Of Base, even though the tune was different)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A R Rahman (Mon Aug 17 1998 13:40 IST)
Siv: There was a trend all over the world for programmers to make music with loops. It was very new and made it easy to do songs. But I have equippped myself better now and I'm able to produce far better rhythm stuff originally. Though the Telephone song was orginal, some of the loops resembled the kind used by Ace Of Base. And these things are avoided completely now."

I wouldnt call the initial chorus in pesum mani and the mary poppins number, a copy. Inspiration - yes.
And IMO, I dont think the Uzhavan song sounds like Pesum mani (initial chorus or whatever)

I think I've stumbled across the first documented lift of Yuvan Shankar Raja. The original has also been copied in Hindi, a bit more blatantly than YSR - YSR's version was at best inspired, but you can clearly see the influences. Let me give them another listen, confirm and then post the details.

NagaS,
I'll post it tomorrow for sure. There is some issue with the name of the original song itself, it was being promoted by mistake with a different name, I think Channel V started it first - not sure! Trying to get the right song and its right name! Will sure get it by tomorrow.

Is `sound of music' a song or album or troop? I just heard a song (an English song from a private devotional cassette) which is composed for this `sound-of-music' nursery rhyme tune. It's very close to the `thannannam thAnannam thALathil Adi' of IR from yAthra. (Remember KJY joining the chorus of children and singing `dhoorE, dhoorE, peN kiLi kAthirunnu'?) There's a variant of this song in TFM as well : `poottukkaL pOttAlum' (SJ song, Film -Kshathriyan?)

Added the first inspiration of YSR in my page! Song: 'Oh shalalala jamaai' from Junior Senior.

on: Thu Apr 25 00:48:24 EDT 2002
here r a couple of YSR's inspirations ...
"cleopatra" (Unakkaaga ellaam unakkaaga) is inspired from "Bailamo" (Ricky Martin)..
"Irava pagala" (Poovellaam kaettupaar) is inspired from "Vennilavae vennilavae" (Minsaara kanavu)... right from the frilled shirt of the hero to the BGM... YSR wisely changed the female voice to avoid 100%...

Vj...
I strongly disagree! These song may 'sound-like' the ones u mentioned, but I cannot see any direct inspiration - inspiration worth adding in my site. The examples u noted are something like saying that most HJ songs sound like ARR's, which is true to most extent, but no direct inspiration can be proved!
- From: Vj (@ 61.11.80.104)
on: Thu Apr 25 03:13:06 EDT 2002
well... YSR himself admitted in Nayyaandi dhurbar that he made "Cleopatra" inspired from Ricky martin... again, IMO, inspiration is awright but direct lift is not... KarthikS, we agree to disagree...:-)..
Ps : btw, whoz HJ?

Re: YSR song in Junior Senior. IMHO, it is not even an inspiration ..just a small bit of the pattern and that does not sound necessarily unique. YSR track record remains high. I still think he is using modified/as is rhythm loops/bits.

I read this article at Sify Movies:
"Recently, music-company Virgin International sued K3G as director Karan had forgotten to take permission for the Geri Haliwell hit number Raining Men , which he used for Kareena’s introduction in the film. Virgin Records, owners of the music rights were peeved and filed a suit against Johar for using their track without permission. And from the industry buzz, Karan had to settle the problem in a London Court for Rs 25 lakhs. And even though he was very upset, he had no choice but to pay up the amount as he realized his mistake. Next, time the ace director is sure not to lift any tunes for sure!"
What I didnt quite get was whether the original song was used on its own in the movie, or whether they jus lifted the tunes to incorporate it into their own songs, though it sounds more like the former. If it is the former, they cud have jus opted for the easy way out and used a copycat MD to do what is done so often in IFM. If it is the latter, which I think it is not, I'm surprised they have yet to sue alot of other Directors in the Indian film industry. I havent watched the movie...wud anyone know which way it was?

i think its due to the reason that Hindi films r getting recognition abroad, especially post-Lagaan scenario... and K3G got released worldwide including US n the UK...b4 that not much made it in these countries... so the more popular u r, the more attention u get, and the smaller the mistake u did, the bigger its blown..K3G got released in US n UK and was viewed by those people too, who found this "Kareena intro piece" copied, and promptly sued.... so u cd expect a lot more to come ...!!!
