In the crowded bazaar of TFM MDs, I feel Vidhyasagar has carved out a unique style for himself. Starting from Nila Pennae, he has quietly contributed a steady flow of melodies.
His "Malarae Mounamaa" a haunting melody by SPB and SJ brought him some much deserved praise. SPB sings it in every one of his concerts. I would like to know more about his other efforts besides the two or the big hits like Priyam or Karna.

May be you're right and I'm wrong, vijay, but unfortunately the first song of VS that I ever listened to was that JaiHind stuff...then I got a cassette upon my son's insistence to listen to BOMBAY songs which had this Mr Madras also as a twin in that...
Hence, my initial impressions on this guy has been so bad that even Azhagiya Ravanan was looked upon with suspicion...
Just imagine someone introducing Raja to a person (who used to hear `Sunny' & the kasme vade number) as the great TF MD by playing Darling Darling and the very next cassette he chances to hear is `neengal kEttavai'...
About the so called originals, unless they are totally native, one may never know whether another original exists or not...we can't hear all the albums in the world you see...:-))
In any case, I'll give another try to some of his newer works in MY before changing my opinion:-)

eden,
i think you are being unfair to VS. Yes, some of his biggest TFM numbers have been lifts. but he has more than proved his talent for original musicmaking in the Malayalam realm.

The interview says he scored for around 60 Telugu films before moving to TF and then to MF...makes one wonder whether he makes people grow weary of his music very fast:-)

eden,
IMPO, vidya sagar could be much better than, what he showed us so far. I agree with you that, he had been inspired, and even copied few songs, but he has defn shown us, what he is capable of. Listen to boomiye boomiye ( sengootai), or nee katru in nilava vaa, you will sorry for this guy, who has not got his due in Tamil music. The main reason for his disappearance from tamil music world is, he rarely figured in hit movies and sadly, as srinivas mentioned in his interview, music sells only on successful movies.
But listening to almost all of vidya sagar songs, I also feel that, he is geeting repetitive, but mainly due to lack of inspiration from some c grade movies, he is getting offers.
Im also surprised that he has scored 60 movies in telegu. Does any one know, how popular he was there?.
I m happy that, he is doing great in malayalam. Some of the kerela friends I know, have very high
opinion of him.
Still, after ARR in 90's, he is the great music talent to emerge in TFM, Strictly IMO. :-)

IMHO vidyasagar can be graded as the best music director, cos i have got all the collections in mfm right from 'azhagiya ravanan' his first malayalam movies to 'dreamz' his latest movie. He did not shine in tfm because he loves soft music than loud music, thst is why if you listen to the numbers scored in the malayalam music it will be soft. these are the malayalam films that he had scored
1. azhagiya ravanan ( mammotty)
2. mahatma ( suresh gopi)
3. elavankodu desam ( mammootty)
4. siddharta ( mammooty)
5. krishnakudiyil oru pranaya kalathu (jayaram)
6. varna pakittu ( mohan lal)
7. ustad( mohan lal)
8. pranaya varnangal( suresh gopi)
9. mr.butler (dileep)
10.indraprastham(mammotty)
11.deivathinte makan(jayaram)
12.dubai(mammootty)
13.millenium stars(jayaram)
14.satyam shivam sundaram(boban kunjakko)
15.niram(boban kunjakko)
16.ezhupunnatharakan(mammootty)
17.oru maravathur kanavu(mammootty)
all these movies have fared well at the box office because of vidyasagar's music.in his music at some point of time we can listen to old ilayarajs's music.

Some one was wondering about VS's telugu films.
He did quite a few telugu movies in the early 90s,
mostly B and C grade. He never made it big..
IMO, his music was also mostly B and C grade..
However he did surprise me a little with a few of his tamil songs.

Dev,
It is me. I never heard any of his telgu songs, but your opinion validates my belief that, vidya sagar needs good script and comforatble environment to deliver good music.
Thanks

I don't think he does. Stories of Nilave vA , uyirOdu uyirAga were not upto mark, still he produced good numbers. Some of his good numbers have gone unnoticed like the song "nilavonnu paththikichchu enna aachchu , maegaththin thaNNIr ellAm enna aachchu" from ethirum puthirum . It is sad our TFM folks go gaga over songs like yappa yappa ... some crap.

Rameshb,
No, songs in ethirum pudirum, tata birla are really bad. It is not only the stories, but also the directors ( environment), which should give him confidence. He has always given good music for arjun movies (despite the lack of story or otherwise). He has already had his share of B and C grade movies in tamil too, is it not the same reason, people here talking about IR's inability to come up with good scores.
Like V.Kumar, another MD, I like , vidya sagar never had any big hits to boost in his brief career in TFM so far.

Big banner/director/env. are only aesthetically important to a genuine MD as for as good scores are concerned. If you take Taj Mahal for example, the movie was a big flop, but the songs were really good. But can you consider those songs as bad since they did not become as popular as some DEVA GANAM?:-)
- From: e.hari (@ webproxy06qfe0.sbi.com)
on: Tue Jun 27 18:06:15 EDT 2000
yes, There may be few exceptions, but if I am a MD, and most of the offers, I get are b or c grade movies, can I do a great job, No it is difficult. But once in a while, I could manage to get out from the boredom, and score some good music. It is not fair to expect Vidya sagar to give us good music in movies like edirum pudirum, tata birla or ayuda poojai because the movie dicates that kind of masala music. But how could he not manage to get some good banners and try to consolidate his position, is a different question altogether.

Eden,
Ini naan malaysia-vukku poi thaan internet use pannanum, athuvum MS oor pakathila..(I think he is located there):-)...(129...)
Regarding Vidyasagar, I really don't agree with the big banner stuff. I think that he is also among the group of mostly copied stuff. Look at it this way. IR came up with great stuff for some unknown banners, so does ARR etc. But Vidyasagar is not consistent in his hits. One mostly hears below average music from him. Even when he gives hits, they sound the same(mood of song). Take his biggest hit 'malare mounama', a lot of his later soft songs resembled it. And even in that song, I would say more than the musical score, it was SPB-SJ that deserves special mention. I do know that a lot of Mallu people find his music good, but he is just doing the same stuff he did in tamil except he is not giving too many dappanguthu songs, in which he wasn't all that great.
And several people have mentioned that films have run for songs alone, so one can't just hide behind poor banner excuses. For eg., someone in an IR thread mentioned that the song 'naan erikarai meel erunthu eduthisa paarthirunthu' was the reason for the films success in some towns.
But apart from all this, what really BUGS me is that these musicians who lift music and not even give credit start talking about music being in their blood, my music etc. The biggest examples of these are Deva, SA Rajkumar and Vidhyasagar, he comes in last because although I know he uses music from others, I have not been exposed too much to his music.
The latest life of SA Rajkumar's that I know of is Ricky Martin's Livin' la vida for a Telugu superhit film 'Kalisundam Raa' for a Venkatesh/Simran starrer released for Sankranthi.
