In the crowded bazaar of TFM MDs, I feel Vidhyasagar has carved out a unique style for himself. Starting from Nila Pennae, he has quietly contributed a steady flow of melodies.
His "Malarae Mounamaa" a haunting melody by SPB and SJ brought him some much deserved praise. SPB sings it in every one of his concerts. I would like to know more about his other efforts besides the two or the big hits like Priyam or Karna.

Of his songs I think that " Malare Mounama " was the best. There's even a little story attached to that song. But I find him too monotonous. His melodious songs seem to be similar. And then those dance numbers he makes, why does he have the singers alter their voices for that kind of song. It justs makes it sound worse.
Aruvi is talking??? too much!! Please find any other song than "MUKALA MUQAABLA" to contradict me. Reason : even I can't figure out how that song could have been a hit, I mean beat and music apart, Mano singing in a false voice did not make it a hit.

"anbE anbE nee en piLLai, thEgam mattum kAthal illai" from the film 'uyirOdu uyirAga' is excellent melody. Once again vidyasagar has used hariharan just that way has is supposed to be. Incredible flute and veena interludes in the song.

Has anyone heard songs from the film Delhi Dharbar? Vidhyasaagar has created a masterpiece in the song 'Manjalil' in the beautiful Ragam HAMSANADHAM(the one IR used in the song Thendral Vandhu Ennai Thodu and the other one in Guru). He's used the technique ARR used in Thiruda Thiruda, where the song has JATHI going alongside the beat, in a subtle and embellishing manner. I'm not sure of any other MD's have tried this technique. He has used UNNI MENON and SRI LEKHA to sing this song and they too have done justice to it. Please take a listen to this, Vidhyasaagar has created another masterpiece, like Vaarai En Tholiye. There is another song in the same movie in the Ragam Abheri/Bhimplaas.....it's also very good, but the 'Manjalil' song is JUST STUNNING and put a big smile on my face when I was stuck in an awful traffic jam and also grabbed all my attention in it's first listening.

YGeetha,
So is the Delhi Dharbar CD worth buying? Can you give a full review of the movie's songs in the review section? Many people, myself included, would greatly appreciate it.

I don't know It's worth it or Not! But the VS Used Sri Lega, I hope that she is new comer to Tamil and she does not sound well. VS also repeat the Then Merku Paruva Kaatru song in the movie though it sounds good! IMO, for a dubbing movie it's alright!

Another recent Malayalam movie by VS was
"Krishnagudiyil Oru Pranayakaalathu" starring Jayaram & Manju Warrier. The songs were a huge hit & I think VS got the last state award for this movie. From my memory, I can offhand comment that VS hasn't tried any new improvisations in this movie. He's just stuck to simple melodies & they sound very good.
? Was it VS or Maragathamani who did Bharathan's movie "Devaragam" (Arvind Swamy, Sridevi). I remember the song of Sridevi singing with deepams for its irritating voice (female) & Sridevi's miserable attempt to look a coy teenager (IMO:-)
Sorry for the digression:-))

ravy,
Thayin Manikodi was a moderate hit, it was released, when I was india in sep.. Songs
are good , with 'nooru anduku orru morai' stands out from the rest. IMO, it is not as good as previous arjun/VS films lke subash, or senkottai.
But as per the trade circles, audio is a huge hit.

"Delhi Darpar" is not definitely a Malayaalam Movie. Vijaya shanthi's picture is on the album, hence I believe that it shouldln't be Malayaalam unless Vijayashanti is acting in different language other than tamil and Telungu!

Q : A complaint against most composers is that, after a point, they get repetitive, they use bits of their own tunes again. What would you say to that?
VS: Well, if I repeat myself, I think that is only natural. I mean, it is after all my creation. Look at it this way -- don't my children resemble me? They are not the same, merely similar. There are simply some points of resemblance between them. Same case with music -- maybe there is a resemblance between different tunes I compose. They might be like each other, but they won't be identical. And I think that is only natural.
Comment: One makes wonder then what justification he has about the song from the film `Mr Madras' which is nothing but a mere repetition of `the way you make me feel' from the album `Bad' by Michael Jackson:-) (Broadmindedness, may be?)

To me Vidyasagar is no natural...each of his song is either copied or inspired; he's another Deva (could be worse)... even his much acclaimed `vennilA chandhanakkiNNam' is heavily inspired from the ARR hit `chinna chinna Asai' (not exactly the melody part, but the arrangements and the feel)...
The whole point is, he takes a reference song and works on what notes to change, where minor modifications can be done etc. to make it look like a new creation...when there's time pressure, even such efforts are not taken and it shows well...take the song in `Jai Hind' where he has note-for-note copied a Punjabi song which has `hoi, hoi' after the end of each line...
Check his interview where he indicates why he's not comfortable with scoring the BGM...where one needs some real musical creativity to sync the situation...In that aspect, he resembles ARR who's preference to work on songs rather than BGM is known ...

to compare Vidhyasagar with Deva is just atrocious. We are speaking about a talented guy whose best songs have always been original. Take 'va sakhi' from arasiyal and 'poothirukkum maname' from pudhayal for example. The rock guitar in the former was simply awesome. It was a new experience listening to these songs. Some of his interludes are amazing. He brought freshness into TFM music and his escape to the mallu world is TFMs loss. I thought he would be a potent challenger to deva for the TFM crown.
Iam disappointed that he is not doing many films in TFM. agreed that he has some definitely inspired compositions but who has'nt? Has'nt ARR or IR been inspired many times either? And unlike Deva he does NOT have to rely on just inspirations alone to survive. No wonder he has been hailed as the 'ARR of malayalam film music'.
