Shankar-Ehsan-Loy...maybe the only other MD with Bollywood roots also composing for TF....I was listening to their "Dil Chahta Hai"..except for the title track, all the other songs seem to meander around...but they are the only ones around in Bollywood who give a original techno touch to their music apart from ARR.
"Aalavandhaan" is their next big TF release...would like to hear your opinions on this trio.

Ehsaan:
Do you guys plan to go solo sometime? 'Cos Shankar went solo with his Breathless aint it?
And Loy has done quite some jingles and TV themes I presume! You planning anything on your own, ever?
Shankar's Breathless was a amazing body of work. His inspiration from classical carnatic music and his interest in folkish forms of music (say, Maharashtrian folk) was quite apparent and very beautiful. And Loy's theme for The World This Week still ings in my ears! Is there something you have done on your own? Do lemme know!

"unfortunately i'm told that nearly 75% of mass sales happen in smaller towns in the north.." Actually, I am very happy to hear this. This means that north is not that divided economically as I originally believed. The common man seems to have enough buying power.
"generally people up north prefer songs they can relate to in terms of similarities to their folk music" hey..they are only asking for 'similarities' is this a big demand ? I would guess there should be enough scope for experimentation within the boundaries of rhythm the are looking for. As far as I know, Punjabis are very proud of their culture/music. It is this pride/self-esteem which makes them work hard and prosper. No wonder Punjab is one of the affluent states in India. Even outside India they are doing really well in US/Canada. Many CEOs of big software companies are Punjabis. So let us not totally forget our music. Most genres in the west were evolved locally (albeit with outside influences). Similarly, we should evolve our music gradually, not throw out everything for a totally 'new sound' overnight.
Just my 2 cents worth.

It is surprisingly similar to the escape of my freinds too. I guess, most of the people who escaped seemed to have had surprisingly similar narration.

Today was a terrifying day here in NY. My office is about 3 blocks from World trade center. I take the train to World trade and then walk to office...today luckily the train stopped at the station before and we were told that there was some emergency. I never thought it would be anything of this magnitude! I could see the
building engulfed in flames...got out of the place right away. Reached back home safe.
Its just scary.

I am happy for the fortunate few that escaped and sorry for those who lost their lives in this mindless cruelty. I visited NY a little more than a year ago and stayed at the WTC, Marriot Hotel. I guess this hotel is burnt and destroyed as well. A black-and-white photograph of the WTC,against the Brooklyn bridge, that I bought from a side-walk vendor hangs on the wall of my house reminding of the once majestic buildings that are there no more !! It is really really sad..

Ehsaan speaks about the making of the music of Aalavanthaan!
http://www.radiosargam.com/features/interviews/ehsaanabhay.htm
"Kamal Hassan And We Connect As People"
Music director Ehsaan relives the experience of creating the music of Abhay.
It was not by chance that we got to do the music of Abhay. Shankar had already sung a song for the Kamal Hassan starrer Tenali.
So, it came as no surprise when we received a call from Kamal Hassan asking us to meet him at his Bombay flat. We met for about two hours and spoke about… everything else but Abhay. We spoke about religion, World War 2,
Hollywood… the topics seem endless. To put it in simple words, we connected as people. It was later that Kamal Haasan mentioned that he was working on this screenplay and would call us as soon as something concrete was ready.
Later, when things fell into place, we flew down to Chennai where he narrated the screenplay of his film Abhay. Our first thought was "Wow does music really fit into this film?"
For starters Kamal and Suresh Krishna (director) told us to come up with a title song for the Tamil version Alavandhan. And we came back to Mumbai. At that time, we were in the middle of the background score for Mission Kashmir.
We jammed to create the title song of Abhay. What we came up with was completely on the edge as far as Indian film music is concerned with all its dark techno influences.
We loved it but sent it to Chennai expecting a complete "bounce" and a polite goodbye from the compositional duties of Abhay. Surprisingly we got a call from Kamal and the producers saying that they loved the music!!!!!!
The next meeting was in Ooty where Kamal was shooting. Javed Akhtar and Tamil lyricist Vairamuthu were there too And we came with most of the ideas for the songs Koyal Si and Zingoria and Hasde it was wonderful seeing the two top lyricists in their fields coming up with so many words.
The rest of the songs were going to be dialogue-poetry driven compositions, which were going to be a narrative of the negative character Abhay.
Essentially the music of Abhay is music for an action film and music composed for the two widely opposite characters in the film Kamal as the Army Officer and Kamal as the psychopath.
When one sees the film the songs will fall into place with the visual support. There are essentially three songs and three cinematic pieces of music, which are a narrative of the character Abhay.
Talking of responses, we have had response from the press and various reviews saying that after Dil Chahta Hai, Abhay was a letdown. Essentially one has to realize that we compose music for a film. If the film is a trendy, young film like Dil Chahta Hai we will compose that kind of music. Abhay is not the kind of film where Kamal Hassan suddenly gets beamed to Switzerland where he is prancing through the snow with Raveena.
Look at the soundtrack for the genre of film it has been composed for. If you hear a Hindi soundtrack of ours for a film called Shool it is very much in the same cinematic vein where a film has to have the minimum of pure entertainer songs to do justice to the script and the screenplay.
Our songs are not bit and pieces lent to the film. They are a part of the film as the narrative itself.

-- Hang in there, don't get discouraged by bad press response or anything. Come back here to check for reviews after the movie is out...
