Some of vikram's expressions remind me so much of kamal-just as sivaji influenced subsequent generations kamal will remain an inspiration to present lot.
Reg nayagan-I have seen all the 3 godfather movies. There is a similar situattion in GF3 where Alpacino's daughter is shot-I tell you kamal was far better than Alpacino in that particular scene.
Also while easily dismissed as copy of GF, except for the basic concept of gangster culture and its influence on the gangster's family, there are very few similarities. And also remember kamal did all the phases inlife of naicker-whereas they had to go and get Robert de niro to do the younger Don-agreed that MB was too old to be portraying all the phases.
Anbe sivam
If you want to see sivaji underplay, do not miss Motor sundaram pillai, Uyarndha manithan, Devar magan.UM is my all time favorite.

yo Kannan from Sidney,
Just curious how did u get into Sydney (if that is true) with this kind of taste, man...liking sathyaraj's comedy as opposed to Kamal's
If u like Sivaji, that's ur opinion, why u have to trumpet so much negative comments about others who are more talented/were more talented than him ( in many people's opinion)
U mentioned u are not a old Bugger, but u are bugging everyone with ur lengthy Pro ( hyped ) Shivaji comments.
He was a good actor no doubt, but never versatile
Grow up to think about different talents, just overacting and delivering lengthy dialogues is not the ultimate acting.
Tamils from TN have a big problem recognising and giving true recognition to deserving talents,
I have n't seen PM, but Bala's "nanda" was very very average compared to "Sethu"
From the TV clips, Isee Vikram has aped a lot from Kamal ( I think he has over acted atleast in some place).
What was wrong with teh Nayagan, crying scene ?
Shivaji's 80's and 90's only two good movies were" Mudhal M" and Devar Magan"
Get a life buddy, he came out with some atrocious movies in the last 2 decade of his career, but for Bharthiraja and Kamal ( with those movies), people had to remember only from his innumerable "Paa series" movies from Bheemsingh, with non stop overacting in many.
How can u consider an actor who is so stereotyped as a versatile actor.
Rent all Kamal movies ( 16 Vayadinile, Sigappu Rojakkal, Apoorva raagangal, Avargal, Salangai oli, Swathimuthyam, Moonram Oirai, Nayagan, D Magan, MMKR, A sahodarragal to name a few) and Shivaji movies and watch them alternate day and see the difference.

Let me first apologise to one and all if i had spoken filth.I never meant anything wrong.I only asked velji to stop talking in that manner which alone was meant by my "pothikittu po".Anyway it was wrong on my part to have used such language.
Anyway if u read my next post,i had mentioned to velji,"sorry if i had hurt u".i was talking only to velji and not to u people(babainwhite, sarala and vinodh).I also know decency.I've been observing this forum for the past 3 yrs and I've found much more filthier expressions by people(even greater than what babainwhite had used against me).Anyhow i don't want to justify myself.
ok fine i think i've made amends.

To understand Sivaji and his acting moods, u have to know his personality. and it is one of the finest gregarious, not egoistic, extroverted, uninhibited, playful and man's actor. Kamal has got a different attitude personality, more like a woman' actor and his ego dominates everything plus sometimes plus he wants to dominate all the time that means he is not extroverted in real life. but that is a personality for a creative man who wants to be in complete control of the art and Kamal achieves that in screenplay, comedy timing, ghotst direction etc... but sivaji is an institution by himself because of his exprssive looks, voice he made excellent use of the times, opportunities and people around him and focussed on the art of acting and it was the idyllic times. I find only michael caine with that level of comfort and ease in the film world but acting there is no one to match sivaji, who brought a balance of naturalism and theatrics to make any scene just joyful to watch. There is one other person i admire that is Bharath Gopi. how about Mohanlal? well, if you have a melon head for a frikcin face you can do any natural acting u like and anyone will buy it without questions.

Sivaji..might have overacted..but he has reached some peaks in acting that others cannot match. Forget acting, when it comes to style ..there is no match for him. Watch the songs..even Rajini seems to be inspired by him.
He is a natural actor..even in a still..he looks exactly like the character. Nobody has such a face (or can control the facial muscles/body language) like him.
Kamal and Vikram are hardworkers..Not really natural like Sivaji.

Guys,
This business of saying that Anbe Sivam would have been a great movie if Roman Polanski or some other Whoeverski had directed it is pure bilge. Saying that a fair-skinned girl cannot or should not fall in love with a black-skinned mechanic is a pathetic attempt at elitism. And dropping names is another.
Why is it always that one expects that only the good looking guy should be the protagonist? Why should he always be fair?
My approach to watching a movie, or reading a book for that matter, is to look at it as a window into some part of the world at some point in time. Instead of asking why is it that the hero always gete the girl, why not think of it as something that has happened already and the movie is a chronicle of that sequence of events? Might sound naive and stupid, but it helps me suspend disbelief and enjoy the movie for what it is - not what it attempts to convey.
I remember an interview of RK Narayan by Natwar Singh on DD. Natwar's question to RK was what was the moral that he tried to convey through his stories. Rk replied that his moral was to write to make money and to entertain people. If someone wanted to read some moral into it, they were more than welcome.
Criticism is a dangerous thing. The egregious critic assumes that his criticism will set right the Art. The critic is just a witness to values - does the artist believe in what he is doing. When he tries to become a creator of values, and the artist feels obliged to succumb to it, Art goes down the drain and with it, intellectual honesty.

One more thing about the movie Pithamagan - IR was given lot of opportunity for his BGM pieces, and he has made very good use of it.... the 1st scene - mayanaa booomi scene was too good....
And for guys who r comparing Sivaji with others - Sivaji is an INSTITUTION, and all others are just students or teachers there..... about his overacting - i would blame the movie director only for that..... Sivaji is a Drama actor - and in that period of time, they would act a lot on stage, so that the guy in the back stage too feels the acting..... the same thing got carried over.... did u watch Mudhal Mariadhaaai - see how controlled BR would have Sivaji.....
someone asked if his name was Sivaji - no his original name is "Ganesan" - he was given the "Sivaji" when he did tthe "Chatrapathi Sivaji" in one of the early dramas - if iam correct, Periyaar gave him that title i believe (or was it Kamaraj ?)

I think we are comparing two persons acting in a different era. Most of Sivaji's movies were made when cinema was just a widespread drama, where exaggeration plays an important role. Also, Sivaji is someone who delivers what a director wants, kamal is different. A sivaji with kamal's attitude would have been so different.
Kamal comes from an era where things are natural.
You need to see Devar Magan to understand how he can adapt to modern acting. I havent seen pithamagan, because its not released here or I dunno the theatre where it is released ( I am in London), but from my previous experience Vikram has acted normally. I dont know how good he will be in comedy. We need to wait and see.

Sabesan,
I would put it this way. Sivaji was a professor and actors like Kamal were students.
In some planes, I feel student(Kamal) has crossed Sivaji's limits and in some plane he could not. However, Sivaji holds the grand honour of bringing acting to the much starving Indian films. Kamal took where Sivaji left and taking Indian cinema to greater heights. Now I am happy to see there are actors to take it from Kamal.

Never mind the gender bias in the above (women can't be critics??) it is the irony which is loud and piercing. By criticising practitioners of "criticism" you've dipped into the very thing you called "dangerious" and "elitist" -
How's that for belling the critic? :-)
