Mr. Anbe Sivam.....you must be joking.
It is a world accepted fact Sivaji is the ultimate. Please for heaven's sake...don't compare anyone with him. Which world are you in....you claim Sivaji can't perform romantic roles. Have you heard of a film by the the name...Vasantha Maaligai...which is still seen by everyone as the ultimate love story....it is a record breaker all around the world. You talk to a Sinaporean, a Malaysian or a Srilankan....they see that film every year as a ritual. Gemini...Kamal...Karthik...to some extent Madhavan are one of a kind..they specialise in romantic roles. This doesn't mean they are not good actors...they are fantastic performers. Romance comes to them naturally and for the rest they work hard and soem time pass and some time fail. The same for Rajani, Satyaraj and Prabu for whom comedy and action and aggression comes naturally and in the rest they work hard. This list goes on. Now...how many times do you want me tell this to you....Sivaji does it all and he sets the bench mark. You don't want me to name long list of roles which has become the ultimate guide for the budding actors. You are talking about Salangai oli...Kamal is a dance master...what do you expect from him. Also, I do agree that he is an allrounder and is talented. But the question here is about 'acting'.
Now don't talk about overacting....Sivaji's era is different....more over that was what the directors wanted because that was what the audience wanted....because nobody elase could do that. Mind you...unlike all other actors (icluding Rajini) when MGR & Sivaji acts in a film ...no matter who directs...it goes down as an MGR and Sivaji film. We all saw what what happens when he works with a director like Bharathiraja or Bharathan...in Mudhal Mariyathai and Devar Magan at that elderly age...he just had a cake walk and bull-dozed every one else. It is a pity that he didn't get work with some of the great name like Benegal and Ray....he was too big for them to handle.
Now...didn't every one have big laugh..when Kamal cried (or should I say scream) when his son died in Nayagan. From Sinni to Vivek...in every single film these days..you will fins a scene where they imitate Kamal's overacting in Nayakan and Guna. Now does this mean his performance in Nayagan was bad. Not at all. But..you can't deny the fact it highlighted Kamal's short comings when it comes to histrionics...he simply can't do it. He is at ease when it come to suttle acting..but where you need a bit of histrionics or aggro or effortlessness...he falls short big time. In fact...people like Rajni, Satyaraj and even Prabu do these things with ease. But I should say he has improved opver time when it came to comedy, which I thought was his major weakness until MMKR & Sathileelavathi. But...even now when he does comedy..he seeks refuge in a particular 'accent'..e.g. Thenali, Sathileelavathi, MMKR and many others with Madras slang. He is not a natural...like say Sathy or Rajini & Prabu (e.g. Guru-sishyan). However...you must give credit to Kamal he has come a long way ...not only in comedy but also in emotions as well. Brother...I guess you too young to analyse these things...have seen a film by the name Satyam. If not rent a video and see the wedding seen in which Kamal cries...people in the cinemas
laughed.

(sorry for the repeat above)
Now...Vikram seems to have the ability to provide histrionics...he emotes without much of a fuss. There is a saying in tamil...only if you have it in the pot...you will get it in the spoon. Because...he has the ability..Vikram doesn't have to seek refuge in the so called 'natural acting'. Because....any day...if it is required...he can do it. Yes...he did overact in Pithamagan...but hey ...like the Sivaji films...it is making history and breaking collection records. So...what. Yo don't make movies for awards...you make them to make money. We all know what happens when Kamal 'acts'...forget all the rest..even Nayakan couldn't get close to Manithan and Ulavar Magan that were realsed around the same time. Acting for me is what is appreciated by the audience not a few 'Jollna Pais'.
Eventhough Vikram doesn't have the versatility of Sivaji (but, who did?) he seems to be doing the selected roles with effortless ease and with heart and soul. Let him continue in the same path and become a classy actor for the masses!
Now...get this straight my friend...how many times do you have to be reminded...everyone has a replacement.....BUT NOT SIVAJI. Ask anyone...from the cine field...or who has a bit o knowledge. Just think...why did he command such a big funeral...when he was not a politician or was not in power and had stopped acting long ago. Even MGR couldn't attract such crowds with his party and power intact. Becaus ewe all knew...we had lost something invaluable and the like of which Tamils may not see again at all! See...Pithamagan...why is Bala using Sivaji and his names and his songs throughout the movie? Why did even Rajini had to show a clipping from a Sivaji scene and say 'super acting' in his latest BABA. Did you watch Leoni's Deepavali Pattimandram on TV...word to word it was Sivaji and his acting. Why...kep asking that question...why?
Friend...Kamal, Sha, Puri, Mammooty, Lal and the more commercial Dilipkumar, Amitabh, Rajani (in his good old days) and the latest Vikram are all good and even great actors. No doubts about that. But, their greatness will be measured with a 'scale' called Sivaji.
I really get annoyed someone who is not informed enough... makes really silly and stupid comparisons. Sivaji wrote the first and last chapters of acting in the Indian cinema. Before him ..we all know what the situation was. He ruled the tamil filmdom as a king for 40 to 50 years. He was the hero in his first movie and gave us an epic in Parasakthi...teaching all and sundry what is movie acting all about. He left us 45 years later still as a hero with an award winning and scene stealing performance in Devar Magan showing the world....this what your so called....'natural, under acting ' is all about. He only took a few days to do his part. Now...who taught him all this...in those days, did have the access to all the DVDs and videos of hollywood movies for him to copy. No, he was original! He was the father and mother of 'Tamil, Indian Ciname Acting'. Now, you wouldn't want to compare anyone else with your parents Mr. Anbesivam? Would you?
I have no problems recognising Mammooty or Kamal or De Niro or for that matter anyone as a good actor and appreciating their talents and efforts. For your info, I am a fan of Kamal too! But, don't you dare COMPARE...ANYONE...simply ANYONE with Sivaji. It is a CRIME!
Thanks for your understanding and excuse me for the long response...I simply get annoyed when people who are not informed start commenting things as if they know it all!
Cheers
Kannan

Overacting is justified when it comes to transition period from stage drama to regional movies. Audience have had developed their mindset particulary to hear loud voices , big eyes and beefed up emotions. This was all due to limitations of stage drama. So Actors suited their skills to adjust accordingly.Director could take advantage of wise audience just by placing a beard on actor whereby villain can't recognize him but audience do. Such was the understanding of audience due to influence of drama..etc.
Now things are changing , when we see movies we want sensible characters , close to real emotions and justifiable script. if we want to see overacting , we will watch stage drama.
I haven't seen any single movie performed by sivaji ( I wonder why tamilian person is named like sivaji ? Is he marathi ? ) I can't comment on his skills. But going by comments sivaji seems more of a stage artist who later suited himself for modern cinema ( devar magan ). And That's great !!! devar magan and pitha magan are definitely on my list.

Kannanfromsyndney,
I don't undermine Sivaji's greatness. But your thinking that nobody can parallel Sivaji is the one I can't accept.
People scare to talk about defects in Sivaji's performance because of the fear and name he earned. You are talking about Kamal's performance in Nayagan. Agreed people laughed at that one scene. It is also true that he has put on weight when required, became muscular when required(in Aalavandaan)to suit the role. Where is your Sivaji there? He was always a peepaa. My point is while Sivaji was good in facial expression, he was no that good in the stuffs I mentioned above. But in movie making everything has a place.
Yes Sivaji definitely was original and that is why I gave credit that Kamal inherits from him and improvise, and to add perfect it at many times.
You are talking Vivek, Chinni Jayanth making comedies about Kamal's acting in Guna and Nayagan. They did the same to Sivaji much before they started doing it.
You are annoyed when someone compares Sivaji with others because you are so convinced with his acting while others are not that convinced. For your info., I am a middle ager not youngster and I have seen Sivaji movies enough. I feel there is a lots of overacting in his later movies, while I appreciate he was brilliant in some movies.(Thillana Mohanambaal).
But your comment that he has started and ended the acting history in Tamil is too much for anybody. You are not giving scope for possible god creation(may be your Sivaji may reincarnate) to achieve and surpass what he did. This in my opinion, comes from ignorance of grandless of nature and god's creation.
Again, I repeat, Sivaji was a pillar and Kamal is a pillar giving due credit to Sivaji.
