- A great Shyam + SPB song for the weekend. The humming is by S.P.Shailaja.
- Saravanan wrote this in the Vani Jayaram songs thread (there is a song by SJ and VJ in this film):
VDS Productions’ Manitharil Iththanai Nirangala starred Kamal Hasan, Muralimohan, Major Sundararajan, Surulirajan, Sridevi, Satyapriya, Manorama & others. It was directed by RC Sakthi.
In the recently announced National Awards for 2002, the National award for the 'Best Environmental Film, 2002' went to a 22-minute Tamil film titled Urumaatram directed by B Sivakumar. And what is more special is the chief protagonist is played by Director RC Sakthi. His moving performance in this short film has won rave reviews. Acting is not new to RC Sakthi, he sparkled in a brief role in the award winning Jameela, and has also acted in the few reels of Kamla’s Marudhanayagam that have been canned so far.
RC Sakthi’s association with Kamal dates back to the mid 70s. Unarchigal-1976 was a stark off beat film directed by RC Sakthi, with Kamal in the lead. (Incidentally Shyam was the MD for Unarchigal as well.) Manitharil Iththanai Nirangala followed next. RCS proved his mettle in mainstream cinema as well in the following year- Dharmayudham, with IR’s awesome score, was a thumping success. ‘Makkal Iyakkunar’RC Sakthi’ s career as a director has been a chequered one- if he rose to dizzying heights with his brilliant celluloid adaptation of Anuradha Ramanan’s Sirai, in the same 1984, he also sunk to abysmal depths with the woeful adaptation of Rocky: Thangakoppai starring Karate Mani in the lead. He reminded us through his Manakkanakku-1986 that the two sisters who dominated Tamil Cinema in the 80s were also capable of sensitive performances. His Koottuppuzhukkal-1987 (also Anuradha Ramanan’s story) brutally bared the ugliness behind the urban middle class facade. However, films like Santhosha Kanavugal-1985, Thaali Dhaanam-1987 and Varam-1989 were disappointing, to say the least. His sensitively crafted Paththinipenn proved too unhurried for the fast paced 90s.
Manitharil Iththanai Nirangala was released on Deepavali (October 30th), 1978. It couldn’t face the stiff competition from the other films released on the same day- Sigappu Rojakkal, Thappu Thaalangal, Thaai Meedhu Sathiyam and Aval Appadithaan, and sank without a trace. Ironically the other Kamal-Sridevi starrer ‘Sigappu Rojakkal’ released on the same day went to become a super hit, continuing to be screened for more than 25 weeks.
Manitharil Iththanai Nirangala revolved around Sridevi, who played with precocious understanding, the central character, Shantha. Shantha undergoes severe tribulations and at one point, is even forced to offer herself to Major Sundararajan. He rebukes her sternly, and makes her see the error of her ways. Hounded by some villains, Shantha seeks asylum in the house of her friend Devaki (Satyapriya). Devaki is married to Velu (Kamal), the drunkard ruffian with a good heart. The Station Master (Muralimohan) is attracted to the demure Shantha, but she wards off his gentle advances being ashamed of her unsavory past. When she finally comes around to accepting him, her nemesis catches up with her, as Muralimohan turns out to be Major’s son!
- I caught this song in sun tv recently. The picturization had totally killed the song :)
- Shyam's "vaanam panneeraith thoovum" and "nenjaththil pOraadum eNNangaL" were featured in SOTD earlier.

bb, way to go!
On SOTD, SPB in his elements. What more do you need? :-) This song should bring in a whiff of nostalgia for all those vivdhbharati listeners of the late 70s/early 80s.Ponne bhoomiyadi is a good one too, from this film.
Saravanan, I thought Aval Appadithaan was a dud at the BO.

LLD, Thanks. I got the KB part but my mind was distracted by all the dic-sham going on!
OISG, may be we should get a thread on the pervertedness or otherwise of KB!

A breezy song with SPB's soft ,soothing voice. Creates the same mood as another 70's number "Thenralukku enrum vayadhu 16 anro" - Payanam. For a long time I was under the impression, MIN was by Salilda.

bb,
After the recent events, I'm glad you got that mail about maasil veenayum. This is what this thread is all about.
Saravanan,
I caught MIN on TV recently. A simple telling of quite a revolutionary subject for TFM. I concur with the song sequence though, the guy looked like one of those early Doordarshan drama actors with the requisite cheap jibbaa and a throwaway NTR wig.
But the song itself captures an entire melodic era of bygone glory in a mini capsule. For me, Shyam entered the big league in one giant leap after this song.

SUPER SUPER SONG OF SHYAM - he gave some of the finest tunes to TFM!!!! i think, IR's naan pesavanthen is very close to this song!!!! but, it goes to prove that Shyam has had the most influence of Salil CHoudhry.
what unparalleled fluidity in this composition!
bb, please serve more - very nostalgic season this is....

Really, such a class song sidelined in my IR fervor of those days! Today, it is priceless. Extraordinarily melodious - got the fluidity of an MSV composition and the surreal melody of Salil, the fluidity is not a trademark of most composers, inclduing Salil & IR!!!!
Really one of the finest compositions in music, that too from the underrated Shyam. I am very keen on collecting all his albums from now on. Something magical about this composer!

mayangudhamma eNNangaL naaLum...BB, u mised out thanking SK for this song who provided it. IT is probably the most elusive song for me. I heard it just once when the movie was played in the T.V 10 yrs back I think and got stunned by the awesome fluidity. Another song in the same league which eluded me was "maan kaNda sorgangaL". Great songs and inimitable delivery !

Shyam was an assistant to Salil Choudhry among others, and of course MSV. So, the Salil influence is there.

I have a feeling that this song was tuned for pre-written lyrics. Even in the pallavi, the tune follows a complicated chandham with an extended melody line in "thodarndhu nI pAdum rAgam enna ponvaNdE", which, IMO, has been tuned with pre-written lyrics.

Another marvel from SPB.As mentioned earlier i love this great one for Balu and Shyam for the remarkable smoothness acheived in delivery.Shyam has particularly down played the telugu influence in stanzas (prewritten lyrics).Pallavi efforlessly steals your heart. So does Sridevi!
I am not worried about Murali Mohans "White Shoe" ,Embroidery Jibba and to top it all, the atrocious wig.(AP films (and TF to some extent)i presume consumed the whole jute production of Bengal for the wigs - Then came the dialogue "ee Sab Jute hai").Only if i forget them i can enjoy this song.
Murali Mohan - I had seen some of his movies like Bommarillu, vijaya (shot at the village near Eluru where my dad worked those days),Kaksha(with Shoban babu,Sri,JC).This non-actor has impressed me with his consistency !Did he star in Jagadguru Adi shankarar?
Shyam -had his moments with MoulLi s movies and Panjakalyani.Shades of Salil and MSV are pretty noticable yet Shyam has had his signature well in place.
BB,
That letter on Masil veenayum should be an eye opener for you. That was the last song in the mock(ery) weekly countdown.More than the songs the "NinaivalaigaL" they bring makes SOTD special. There must be 1000 other IR songs better than "Poove poochuda vaa" but see the responses when you featured that.I get drowned in thoughts when i listen to "Paniye vaa panju mazhaye vaa" not because that is a great song but the tender moments attached with it,the tag of mudhal kadhal makes this song my favourite!Shyam again!
Kupps
That was a hit just above the belt though your intention was to hit below!

Hey, does anybody have the vital statistics for "nAn pEsavandhEn" (IR/SPB-SJ)? Been looking for it for a REALLY long time and have been playing it in my mind from memory for many years now. Would love to hear it again. BTW, has it ever been a SOTD?
