Sundar's post about the Jaiganesh Satyapriya jodi (it did occur to me that that was the pair for the Avaley En Kadhali - thanks for confirming! - but I held back, not being absolutely certain) the latter also had another film in which I believe there was a VJ solo or duet:
The film was : Manjal Mughame Varuga (It has Vijayakumar and Satyapriya, I think) and was also part of the "show-and-tell" set. Satyapriya had the misfortune (or good fortune,) of being in the company of the Y Vijayas, Jayadevis, and Meeras - somewhere halfway between vamp and villy most of the time!

Cinema Virumbi -
Dil Dhoondtha Hai Phir Wahi Fursat Ke Raat Din
is an absolute gem from Madan Mohan. I also really like the sombre version. I've never since felt fursat mixed with ennui in Bhupinder's voice. Who was the Ruke Ruke Se Kadam (Lata solo) by in the tamizh version, any idea?
And by the way, your "little" urdu needs no modesty. It is just fine!

Neel D -
I wonder if you have noticed that IR always went to Vani when he had a song that needed to be sung at breakneck speed, without losing out on the words or the essential melody:
Ilangkuyile, Vachchaalam, Naan Oru Kannipponnu, Kavidhai Kelungal (hasn't been a song like this in a while) Machchane Paradi (with SJ) Hey I Love You, Idhu Rosapoovu,...
Do you see a pattern?

Naaz,
You are correct. You can also add "Nee Kettal Naan Matten", "ALAna ALillaiyO", "andela ravamidhi" to that list. A True Singer is one who can sing at any scale, at any kaalam and still maintain clarity and expression. And there is no one to beat VJ there.

Naaz,
That is not the case always with IR. How about En kalyana vaibhogam,Naaney naana and Kanden engum- evergreen melodies of VJ.
The one question that has been lingering in my mind always--why IR rejected VJ after Punnagai mannan? Pl. respond.

Naaz- thanks for 'Oh, Manju!' details.
JKM Rao- the song 'Vaazhkkayin paadam paadidum odam' by Tiruchi Loganathan-SJ is from the film 'Ivan avaneythaan'-1960. Music by M Ranga Rao.You're right about the charanams being similar to those of 'Aajaa pardesi'.
Ousider- For many of us, the grass of the 70s is greener:-), but we'll surely come to the 80s presently!
C V, I will defintely not omit 'Kannukku nee oru'- one of my favourite songs- Ullathil kuzhandaiyadi came in 1978.
OISG- Thirumaale, I think is from Deiva Thirumanagal.
Maargazhi paniyil is from Muththana Muthallavao. MD-MSV.
R Sundar, thanks for the info on Avaley en kaadhali. We'll discuss Gaslight Mangamma song in 1977.
Neel- thanks for the latest uploads. How many years since I last heard 'Vechchaalam neththippottu'!

Rgpm Sundar -
Of course IR gave VJ other types of songs, and you are right in saying so. En Kalyana and Kandaen engum are both IR-VJ masterpieces.
What I meant to say was, that whenever there was a composition that required both pace and perfection he seemed to prefer VJ.
His light classical challenges also went to her:
Ennullil Engo, Naane Naana, Indraikku Yaen Indha Anadhame, Maan Kandaen Maan Kandaen, Sangeetham En Dhegamandro, Manmadha Ragangale...just to list a few.
About your question at the end of the post: Yaarukku Theriyum IRyin Yennangal?

Saravanan, Naaz,NeelD,
Kannan kovil paravai (akka) and Sugamaana raagangeley(Mirudanga chakravarthy) did not make the right impact as Ezhuswarangalukkul did because of the film background only.
In Apoorva ragangal the heroine was a classical singer. Srividya being the daughter of MLV was the right choice for the role and had a formal training in music herself being a singer. The same is not the case with other songs. The songs I believe were just thrusted in for filling gaps. K R Vijaya did not suit the classical singer role that VJ's voice did not match her as it did with Srividya. Anyway, thanx to all these MSV's efforts could not get the due recognition. Right?
My personal opinion in these situations would be why these MDs failed to bring proper classical musicians to do these songs? MLV would not have hesitated to sing for MSV. Remeber Mannathi mannan. (Radha)Jayalakshmi would have obliged. Rasikas like us would have had some wonderful creations with the likes of Manamey muruganin, Akhilamellam vilangum(S_G). Agree? your opinion please.

R Sundar-
'Kannan Koil paravi ithu' may not have hit the popularity charts, but 'Sugamaana Ragangaley' did become very popular- I remember 'The Hindu' review saying 'MSV has struck gold'. The song used to be featured regularly in the 'Ungal Viruppam' programmes of AIR- (Regular neyars like Athimalaippattu Madhu Jayapal, Perambur Balakrishnan-Mala, Cathedral Road Karthik-Kanaka, Chinnasalem Maulana, Maduravoyal Kannadasan, Thanjai Benjamain Kailasam-- used to vie with one another in requesting this song!)
Akka was a flop- maybe a weak storyline was the reason. 'Kannan Koil paravi ithu' never made it big. (Shame!) KR Vijaya alone could not have been a reason- she must have acted well. Tfm, like life, is full of ifs and buts.
In my opinion, MLV's voice, in 1975, would have been a shade too heavy for Srividya. (Remember how P Leela, a great singer, didn't fare too well in Karpooramullai for the same Srividya?)
(Radha) Jayalakshmi, perhaps, yes. But she had cut down her film assignments greatly in the 70s and concentrated, along with Radha in her classical concerts and devotional albums. Her forays into tfm were no doubt memorable- Maalai mayangugira neram and Putham pudhu malarey being among my eternal favourites.
But R Sundar, wasn't VJ wonderful in all the three songs? Isn't she trained too? Aren't her credentials absolutely impeccable? Didn't she bring lovely value additions to these creations?

Naaz-
A request: When you find time, can you go through the posts reg. the VJ songs of 1976 that we have covered till now, starting from 'Kannan Koil paravai ithu'- so that you can give the missing details/comments/corrections.(You were away at that time). Please-it will give a sense of completion.
Also, I am told 'Naadhamennum kovililey' is in ragam Sriranjani- is that correct?

R Sundar, Illayaraja made VJ sing even in 1989-Poovaana etta thottu- film: Ponmanaselvan. As Naaz says, IR had his own whims and fancies.

There is nothing incomplete about your exegesis. You are doing a heart-squeeziing-jaw-dropping-awe-inspiring-how-does-he-do- it-again-and-again - enna kaetkathondrum kinda job!
Still, I will do as you say and give the earlier posts a once over. Will certainly add if I find anything left out (but I very much doubt that there will be an opportunity for that!)
Nadhamenum is Sri Ranjani, you are right. Alongside with IRs Sangeetham En Dhegamandro (VJ - Bala Nagamma) and the SJ song which went "Pagalile Oru Nilavinai Kandaen Adhu Karuppu Nila" ( SJ - Some Vijayakanth / Jeevitha film if I remember right?)
Not a very popular raga for when it comes to film music - that is, not as popular as Kalyani or Karaharapriya, or Dhirasankarabharanam.
Regarding Classical Musicians and their Filmi forays (or should that be kurais?). VJs songs from AR, SB, Sruthilayalu, and Manmadha Leelai - can hold their own against any Sudha R, Nithyasree or Bombay Jayashree. At the risk (who cares ??!) of sounding like my designation (remember bhajanmandali and all ? :-)) all these above singers are fine - but VJ would have worked their songs even more had she been given them.
People compare Yezhuswarangalukkul and Paadariyaen in the same breath. That's like putting Sarah Brightman in the same league as Joan Sutherland / Maria Callas.

I always wonder why Ilayaraja made SJ sing this song-Mazhai varuvathu malarukku theriyum magan thirumugam-(i don't know the name of the movie-but it starred sivaji and KR vijaya-the song picuturised on her). This is a very fast paced song but SJ didn't do full justice. its impossible to decipher her words in the high pitch and in teh fast pace. I wish VJ was given this song. This would have been another classic like the punnagai mannan song.
Also I really wished VJ sang for srividya in karopoora mullai-wherein srividya was a classical singer-parallel to her role in aboorva ragangal.
Though there was a cutcheri song in the movie it sank without a trace.

Pandhayathile Kalandirukkura Singara Kuyile - from Lakshmi. (The other hit from this film was the IR-PS duet - Thennamarathule Thendraladikkudhu)

Kaumudi,
It is under MoreTamil. I know it is weird. A Sanskrit song from a Telugu film. Probably the same recording was used in the dubbed Tamil version. As it was a part of my Isaikku Oru Koyil album I put it under there. "NEW" sectionil pArungkaL. adhu navigate ceyyum.
