i think 'kanmaniye kadhal enbathu karpanayo kaviyamo kan valarum oviyamo ethanai ethanai inbangal nenjinil .....' from dharma yudham is one of the best 'moochu vidatha - vida mudiyatha' song. it was recorded when these ultra modern equipments are not available.

In the songs "Nadakkudhu Nandhanvanam..." in Nandhanavana Theru and "Vaarayo Unakke..." from Aathma, IR would have used the same interlude music for both the first and second interludes. Could there be any reason for this??

SPB in Telugu and SJ in Hindi from the Telugu film Rajkumar:

A nice melody predominantly in Kalyani raagam.

The tune appeared as 'Alai meethu Thadumaaruthey chiRu ODam' (dont know the movie).
Excellent melody and indeed a unique experiment.
The Tamil version was purely in Tamil.

This probably had been discussed earlier...i.e. the mood changes within a song. Though we have seen masterpieces in the pre-IR era, I would call him a master in this department (probably the story lines helped him too). One simple example is a song I heard today: `rAjA enbAr mandhiri enbAr' from Bhuvana oru ?
SPB starts with a lot of self pity, the tune agrees with the lines and the interludes too are melancholic...but in the middle of the song, SJ joins with encouraging words and even the interlude undergoes a change...uplifting of the mood. The song ends with feeling that the self-pity is removed & the hero got encouraged and comforted. (A similar song - but with alternating mood is `poongAtRu thirumbumA', BR probably took some clue from Bhuvana...)

"Maharshi" in Telugu directed by Vamsy had a decent Sanskrit Disco by IR. The beat was something new at that time!!! That was a novel attempt.

KS,
The more amazing fact was that the lyrics were written after the song was composed (as is the case for IR's songs) and they were simply superb.

Hey Jag,
Clarify me of a doubt, is "Sannayi" in Telugu termed as "trumpet" ? If not please give me the correct version.
TIA

There is no other MD other than IR who has used Bass Guitar to the best. No composer could ever imagine composing such wonderful patterns and his experiments are countless.
Some worth mentioning songs with best bass patterns
1) Thangachengili ...thooral ninnupochu
2) Poondhalir aada ... Panneer pushpangal
3) Tamizh sangathil ... Auto Raja
4) Ponvaanam Panneer .. Indru nee nalai naan
5) Kadhal oviyam ... Alaigal oivathillay
6) Ilam thuli..... Aradhanai
7) Adamacha... Chinna veedu
8) Matarani Mounamidi... Maharshi (Telugu)
9) edo mogam... Kozhi koovudhu
10) vanile thenila... Kakichattai
...and many more
Regard to experimenting with voices the best song would be Pon oviyam from Kazhugu .

Prashanth,
Sannayi is not trumpet. Its structure is quite different. If I am not wrong it is more suited to play carnatic music. Its widely used in marriages. A trumpet on the other hand is more suited for western music(the volume is inevitably high , mostly in the band). There is no equivalent term for trumpet in telugu.

I would like to add one song to the bass list. "Penmane Sangeetham" from Naan Sigappu Manidhan has a classic giutar follow. Megham Kottatum from Enakkul Oruvan also has a superb follow.

In my opinion, every instrument used in an IR's song is there to make the melody more memorable. The bass guitar is one very good example. The percussion again is played live to 'adjust' with the singing. Instruments are not used for 'decorative' purpose. All are doing a serious job propping up the melody. This is the reason I think (theory) that IR's songs are very memorable. Not to mention the fact, the melodies themselves are very 'mature' not the happy/fun stuff all the time. No wonder, there is a fanatical following for his songs which I have not seen with fans of other MDs. (statements like, "i want to hear IR songs in my death bed " etc).

Thanks Jag,
I indeed, wanted to know the English equivalent of "Sannayi". Anyways, IMO, Raaja brought in a rich and fantastic implementation of Sannayi in songs which normally cannot be thought of containing it.
As far as I know, sannayi is/was used extensively only for the scenes of pathos, demise etc. It was used as if ir were meant only for those scenes in the background.
But raaja has defined prolific sense of utilising sannayi and made the bits more and more hummable and memorable.
I quote those lovable songs in Telugu,
1.Eppudu eppudu..(Aakhari Poraatam) in 2nd
charanam
2. Balapam patti bhaama Balllo (Bobbili Raajaa)
3. Jeeelakarrlo undi (Prema Vijethalu)
These are duets in particular....
Remember any more ?

As far as my knowledge goes sannayi is Shehanai which is an instrument popularly used in Hindusthani music. Sannayi in telugu is interpreted for Nadaswaram which is used in marriages and also in Carnatic Music.
For a clear distinction
Nadaswaram -The interludes in the song rama kanavemira from Swathi muthyam and many tamil songs Viz., Sangeedhame.. in Koil Pura
and of course Shehnai in Balampatti and title song of Koo Koo chuku chuku from Sankeerthana (3rd BGM),
Kokila -Title song (3rd BGM)
Oy rethere.. Sjanakiin Nireekshana
Kothaga rekkalochena -Swarnakamalam-3rd BGM and many more...

IR Fan,
you have listed yedhilum ingu iruppan from Bharathi under the raaga RasikaRanjani but what I *heard* is that, it is based on Poorvi Kalyani.
Which is correct?

Prashanth,
I had to observe a few songs to find more uses of sannayi. Listen the song "bulli pitta..." from Chinaraayudu (chinna kounder). Its got great Sannayi in the interlude. I recently bought a new telugu hits cd from Oriental. its absolutely
superb. its on sale at
www.southindiandvd.com
check it out.

Kupps,
'Ethilum Ingu' is indeed Rasika Ranjani.
People have mistaken it for Malaya MArutam or even Purvi KalyaNi.
There are 2 more songs by IR in Rasika Ranjani:
1. 'Neelakkuyile unnOdu naan' (Film: Magudi)
2. 'Amudhe Thamizhe Azhagiya Mozhiye' (Film: Kovil PuRA)

UVII,
I know a MalayaMarutham song by IR. It is KaNmani neevara kaathirundhaen FROM ThenRalae yennai thodu(Sung by UmaRamanan and KJY). Also, Poojaikkaaga vaadum poovai soorayadal murayao FROM Kadal Oviyum(Sung by Deepan Chakravarthy) and ThenRal yennai muththamittadhu FROM Oru Odai Nadhiyagiradhu(Sung by KrishnaChander and S.P.Shailaja).
I suttified this information from Classical Illayaraaja articles of Srirangam Lakshmi Narayanan.

Kai veesum Thamarai by SPB and SJ
Nilavu Onru Kanden Yen Jannanil by SPB and SJ.
Folks my discovery of these fascinating and highly difficult melodies. Both the songs in the entirety are unbelievable. For those who just gave a cursory glance to these songs, please go back and listen. Actually, the melodic pattern of these songs are somehow different. I am stunned to think that i did not listen when these songs were out in the early 80s! Are these from Kairaasikkaran or some other film? anybody any comments on these songs.
