iam listening to the song "Nallaam Paduvaeeen Nee vazhathaaan" from "Kanmaniye Pesu" by SJ..... SJ has sung both the stanza's without "muchu vittufying"...... iam sure this movie should have come loooooong before "Kaeladi Kanmaaani"..... but no one advertised that the song has been sung without "muchu vittufying", so none of us knew about this......

In Kaadhal mayakkam from Pudhumai Penn he seems to have done quiet a few things like using the echo-effect, stopping the percussion in-between the stanzas, etc.

Vijay,
Manjal nilavukku 2nd int. flute piece is inspired from Orchestral Suite # 2 (Badineree) of JS Bach.

I also feel that IR has used trumpet many a times and to a great effect. Though not really an experiment, thought i'll mention it as i guess it is difficult to compose good notes for a trumpet to sound good.

There's a song from "Rishimoolam" that begins, "mazhai varuvathu mayilukku theriyum" whose pallavi and charanam are all fast throughout. If I remember right, the only place it pauses is when the female singer (SJ?) stops right before resuming the pallavi by humming la la lala lala.
This song is probably his first experiment in pacing. Of course the words aren't all audible which could partly be the singer's fault.

KS,
That's a very good observation. It is true that IR has truly mastered the trumpet, it has been used for two main aspects in his music,
1) Elevation of an action scene indicating danger,
introduction of a protogonist , climactic scenes.
2) Using it for bits which in which actors are
melodramatic, triumphant, joyous etc..
many telugu songs are an example for this
eg. Kila Kila mani .. in Coolie no.1
Chemma Chekka ... in Bobbili Raja
Botany paatmundi .. in Shiva
CLimax BGM in Thalapathi
BGM in Indran Chandran, Apoorva Sagothargal..
and many more
I have seen Pushpak recently and could help noticing that L.Vaidyanathan the MD for the movie, lifted the trumpet pieces from IR's movies. The use of trumpet is certainly a great innovation in Indian movies , since the only use of trumpets used to be the walk of an elephant or a the introduction of a obese person(mostly in hindi movies).

I dunno if this is an experiment or a rarity. I was going thro Dr.laxmi narayans comments on IR and he had mentioned that "Thodi" raagam was used very rarely in tfm. He said it was tough to maintain the raagam in its form through out the song as it cud easily slip into sankarabharam.
so "gangai kara mannanadi" from varsham 16 was quoted as that rare song.
any views?

Good use of trumpet in these. For that matter, everything about these songs is good.

Jag,
nothing original about usage of trumpet for obese person...Most of the guys use the "baby elephant walk" from Hatari by Henry mancini.

Happened to see the `sapthaswarangaL' program (AV Ramanan) this Saturday where the judge was Mr Jeevan (who is the no.1 trumpet player for movie music now, much like his father in `those days'). He played live the starting piece of `rumbumbum' as well as the prelude of `oruvan oruvan muthalALi' (excellent, mesmerising). Thinking about that throws some light on IR's usage of trumpet, which I feel is quite different from others.
Typically, this instrument is used in bands, for `ezhuchi' type songs, march past etc. (e.g.oruvan oruvan). IR too had this functional use, both in songs & BGM. The experimental part is using this vAdhyam for soft, love duets! Check the prelude of `sAlariyOram sOlai ondRu Adum, sangeetham pAdum'...

IR has experimented with a variety of talents in SPB and SJ. The awesome opening counterpoint in the super melody 'rAdha rAdha nee yenge' is a good example where the two melodies start/stop half way with the other instead of exactly superimposing. SJ starts and SPB ends.
In the song kIravAni (pAdum paRavaigaL) he arranges solfage and alaps together and gives an excellent start.
Balu got to a habit of subtle eloquency in skipping beat in some songs after experimenting with "rOja ondru muththam kaetkum...(skip) naeram.."
It is a beauty as Balu yodels , hums with BGM and lands smooth into 2nd charaNam in one breadth in the song "vA vA pakkam vA.." (thanga magan)
Sad... gone are those days now.

Shankar,
that's what I meant too!. I knew that it was from music from hatari.
Check out songs from
Konaloo sannajaaji...from Maharshi,Keeravaani...from Anveshana in telugu
which are experimental. Also I believe that IR is the first person in Indian FM to have used Drums as the mainstream instrument for a song.
eg. Raaja Raajadhi raaja....
Rojaalo..
Ninu Kori... from Agni Natchitaram
Mandram vantha... from Mouna Raagam
Jagada Jagada
Jallantaa... from Idayathai thirudathae
Yenniyallo... from Shiva (telugu, Udayam in Tamil)
Some songs in Indran Chandran
Attention everybody ...from Coolie No.1(telugu)
Valavekkum kaadalikkum ... from Apoorva Sagothargal(correct me here if I am wrong in spelling) , I think is his best in this department.
Other MD 's use of drums used to be mostly for introductory pieces. For example many of Bappi Lahiri, RD Burman's songs come to mind.
I think this list is far from complete, others can give examples for more imaginative use of drums by IR.

http://www.megacinema.com/app/handler?link=1.10.111 --> Abhilasha --> Banthi & Eureka
In Eureka, IR uses SJ only to laugh. And the way SJ laughs thru the song so naturally is simply amazing!!! In fact, u wonder how SPB and SJ can express so well without ever acting. They simply live the song.
In Banthi, watch out for the interludes. What is this instrument that IR has used to give us an unusual sound!?

Watch for the interludes. IR has used SJ’s shrieks, SPB for rendering only swaras, and chorus very effectively. Especially, in the second interlude, to start with, the female chorus evokes a sense of pity in the foreground supported by male chorus and drums in the background that express a sense of danger. And then, the alternating voice of female chorus and, male chorus with drums, create a haunting effect, which is again followed by SPB’s swaras and SJ’s shrieks.
I think this was a very novel attempt and it suited the situation to the tee.
