This may be a 'crazy' query,

But whenever some big arguments (related to TFM) are happening in our DF Threads, somebody or other quote an example / uvamai from Cricket ... ARR is tendulkar, IR is gavaskar, MSV is Bradman, Harris Jayaraj is virendar sehwag and latest - our dear friend rajaG is mohandas menon and so on .... :-)

Is my assumption right ? - Most of TFM DFers are interested in cricket too ..... ;-)

a correction, Courier won FO in 1991 and not Gomez, Gomez won in 90.

But tell me, who in TFM matches Leander's Davis Cup record???

LEander i specifically mentioned Grandslam not not Davis Cup which is a pale shadow now a days..If at all U want to make an attempt ,you can equate Doordarshan "Mellisai" with Davis Cup.

for Becker /IR i have given the ultimate tribute ..you think of Becker you think of Wimbledon...think of IR ..think of TFM.

But was it not true that a Ondrayana Bappi and Dabba LP saw off IR in HFM? Mecir/Pernfors - highly inconsistent players with poor grandslam records saw off Boris in the year he successfully defended his wimbledon title by crushing Ivan.

Becker who served out opponents complained about the game going the "power way" when an Ivanisevic came.IR too complained about electronic invasion though he was the first to use a keyboard.

All said and done there was a "Becker-Mania" and never a "Sampras-mania".

Yeah ,Pernfors defeated Boris in the semis lost to Lendl in the finals.Mats lost in the Round 16 to Chesnokov.All the bigger swede names like Mats,Jarryd,Nystrom,Edberg lost before QF.Perfors was the exception.He was the USTA champion in 1984 or 1985 i think.He made it to the Swedish Davis cup team that year.

1987 went to horrible chang and Mats came back to win in 1988 (the year of Swede Grandslam Mats won 3 and edberg won Wimbledon)

Doohans upset of BB was mentioned earlier in this thread.Oldtimers will recall the unforgettable DavisCup SF of oct 2-4,1987 when India bt def champs Aus 3-2. on that occasion Doohan paired with Cash and won the doubles tie against Anand and Vasu. I think Doohan wrapped up the onesided encounter by firing 3 aces. Like any aussie,he was a good serve n volleyer and no wonder knocked out BB in Wim'87.

I was wondering why no one was talking about any Sri Lankan cricketers, finally `O' has come out with SM-Jayasuriya comparison. I don't know how SM's music is, but my guess is he is great, because he is being compared to Sanath.

Say atleast R.Goel / Raman Lamba / Mada(y)n Lal /Rathore as most invaluable Ranji players.Infact all the Delhi players are invaluable Ranji players;ofcourse they are a mess in test cricket.

Shankar M as Jayasurya - Great start,has matured as a leader ,cut down rash strokes (shouts!),generally a treat to watch for his effortless style.

SPB should be Steve Waugh! Just keeps winning! Moved( or brushed? ) aside for Younger gen like Ponting.Crisis man! Ondrayana lyrics,kuppa music kkoda paatu erunthalum he excels.

You are right !the heading itself was US "Sundstormed" .HS won both singles.Mats lost the reverse to Mac.Swedes won the doubles.

Another thought! Shankar must be Clive Llyod.Has the best punch of professionals working for him.He handles his own stuff well (1983 Calcutta!).He has a Viv (you know who),Four fast bowlers (Lenin-Vijayan-Lakshminaryanan-Venki),Kalli poi Gomes vanthar pol Jeeva poi KV Anand.

C'mon, u wont forget his comeback win over Martin Jaite that year(15/3/87, same day India was chasing 221 in that Bangalore test against Pak).
And then, what about his outstanding win in 4 sets over Wally Masur in that Davis Cup semi? Remember, Wally had knocked out Becker in that 87 Aus Open.
