Kik, thanks for the details.
Subbu, Penn starred Gemini Ganesh, S Balachander, Vyjayanthi mala and Anjalidevi. I don't recall any PS song from it, though there great songs by TS Bagavathi and MSR.
Chellapillai starred KR Ramaswami. I remember only one PS song in it- Thannale varum kaasu.
In Naganandhini, I remember only Jamunarani's songs. But there was a film Nagadevathai, which too must have come in the same period, in which I remember 2 solos by PS: Prabho Nagadeva and Isai paadi suzhandru.

Yesterday I saw some song scenes in Vijay TV. They telecast some old rare songs.. one of that was from Annapoorani (sometime back Saravanan also mentioned about this film). The song which featured KRV and very pale Muthuraman (in his last leg I guess).. "KaNNanukku kobam enna kaNNil Or dhaabam enna..mangai manam puriyaadho oodal kondu labam enna"... By PS + KJY..
Though the song was melodious, the voice of KJY (without any expressions/modulations... was... I couldn't believe it). Muthuraman found it extremely difficult to come out with Kobam in his face.. It was a kinda funny scene..
Guys pl don bambard me with curses on my view on KJY. Am craze of his voice but in this particular song, it was just so so medio..
But always the expressions of PS (Pon majal poomalai mangalyam vazhangiyavan...2nd para.. was soothing melody)..
Was V Kumar the MD for that?

Subbu, yes, VK was the MD for Annapurani (1978), the first of the 5 films that veteran directors Krishnan Panju made with KR Vijaya in the lead in the late 70s in quick succession. Anna purani was followed by Nadagame Ulagam (1979, KRV, Mohan), Neela Malargal (1979,KRV, Kamal, Sridevi), Velliratham (1979, KRV, Vijaykumar, Venira adai Nirmala) and Mangala Nayaki (1980, KRV, Sarathbabu, Srikanth)
All films were moderate hits. Except Annapurani, the other 4 were colour films. KRV as usual, won accolades for her performances. In fact, Indian Express titled its review of Nadagame Ulagam with the lines-'KR Vijaya steals the show'.
Neela malargal and Mangala nayaki were remakes of hindi films. After watching KRV's potrayal of her role in Mangala nayaki, Nutan, the actress who did the role in the hindi original-Sajan bina suhagin, is said to have expressed her wholesome praise for KRV.
Annapurani, Nadagame ulagam and Mangala nayaki had music by VK, while Neelamalargal and Velliratham had music by MSV. All the films had good songs.
While Nadagame ulagam had that enchanting Sapthaswaram punnagayil kanden (SPB-VJ), Mangala nayaki had the memorable KJY-PS duet Kangalaal naan varaindhen. (This song by V Kumar reminds one of VK's Unnidam Mayangukiren (Then sindhuthe vaanam) and Ponnai naan paarthathillai (Kannamoochi)- wonder why VK made 3 songs on the same lines!)
BTW, Mangala nayaki was the first film of actress Shobana, who appeared as a child artist.
Neela malargal had good songs like Maadham oru poo malarum-PS, Ithu irava pagala-SPB-VJ, Pesum mani muthu rojakkal-SPB and Angatha naattil-SJ.
Velliratham had a superb song- Kalaimagal malaimagal-PJ-PS.
Subbu, though in your opinion KJY didn't aquit himself too well in Kannanukku kobamenna, his other song from the same film- Unnai paarka vendum rasikka vendum, with the lines -I don't know I love you- was a runaway hit.
Another caressing lullaby by PS in Annapurani is Ayirandu thingalile, maiezhuthi vandavaney. There is another comedy song, which Cho sings in the film, which is a hilarious take-off of popular film songs- I remember one line- Varuven naan unadhu masal vadayin vaasanaikke- (a parody of Varuven naan unadhu maaligayin vaasalukke!). I vaguely remember a club dance song too -by SJ.

Sorry, Irava pagala (Neela malargal) was by KJY-VJ. (The corresponding song in the hindi original too was popular-Woh kya hai)

About PS' voice modulation for actresses...
A couple of years back there was so much noise in one of the newtfmpage threads with many opposing the possibility or the fact of PS modulating her voice for the heroines, and many others strongly opposing it claiming that it's only a feeling that one gets if the same singer sings for an artist for a long time.
I was one of the supporters and still am. Many years ago I read an interview with PS in Dina Thanthi where she said this: "NaangaL (PS & TMS) paadiya kaalathil makkaL nadigargaL paaduvadhu polave uNarndhaargaL, andha rasippaal uyarndhEn naan". When I met PS at her home in 1994, she denied that she changes her voice for actresses. And said that it was a feeling of hearing repeatedly. (I didn't take it seriously because there were couple of other questions to which she gave quite contradicting answers!). The Vaamanan article quotes PS as saying "ovvoru paadal padaradhukkum munnaala pattOda situation, yaar nadikkirargal enbadhai mun koottiye therindhu kolluven". Enna thalai suthudhaa? Here's what PS said in her 2001 Vanakkam Thamizhagam interview. The question was the same as here: "NadigaigaLukkaaga neenga unga voice-a maatharadhu uNdaa?". But the way she reacted was strange: "Enna vittudungamma pOyidaren...naa en kural-ladhaan paadinEn". Probably she was fed up of this question! Then she continued, "naane eppavum paadaradhaala ungalukku appadi thOnudhu". To this the interviewer said, "Illamma engaLukku eppavume appadi thOnaradhundu, ippO TMS eduthukkitteenganna, avar Sivaji-MGR-kaaga kuralai konjam maathuvaare...?". To this PS said, "aama avar appadithaan. Aana naa matharadhu ille". Then after a few seconds she said "avar kooda appadi ille, paatta andha maadhiri amaippaanga". Look at this! TMS was know for that. He himself has said that but PS goes on to deny it. I somehow felt PS was denying it a little vehemently which looked so unnatural! If you hear the way she sings for Jayalalitha, you can definitely tell she is singing differently. And so for most other heroines. Or may be her voice lent itself for such beautiful modulation by itself over the years to different actresses during different periods of tfm!

I think TMS and PS dealt with this differently - TMS changed the pitch/more nasal sounding for MGR vs. Sivaji and for everyone else used his normal voice. PS used her own voice but adopted signature pronunciations for some words to evoke the actress on screen - specific examples have been mentioned in this thread already (puthiya paravai - chittukuruvi mutham koduthu etc).

I don't know how to respond... I had the opinion hat PS hardly changed her voice for any particular heroine. However, we can debate on "for which heroine" her voice most suited..
"NaangaL (PS & TMS) paadiya kaalathil makkaL nadigargaL paaduvadhu polave uNarndhaargaL"... This particular statement from PS does not convey that she had changed her voice after knowing the heroine name. I guess she referred to the fan's rasanai..
"ovvoru paadal padaradhukkum munnaala pattOda situation, yaar nadikkirargal enbadhai mun koottiye therindhu kolluven"... here too, what is wrong in knowing the situation and the acress... did she say that she used to get these information just for changing her voice?
Even for Jaya..listen to Nam naadu song "Aadai muzhudhum nanaya nanaya..".. yeah, I too feel that there is complete match between PS and Jaya's voice.. but it is my own feeling and how I received it..
I hadrly see any contradiction in different statements of PS... i repeat that it is all our perception and interpretation..
Finally,
- if any renowned singer change her/his voice, their stay in music field will be very short... it will definitely spoil their voice..
- and if they do so, their originality is completely lost (this PS has mentioned in her interview)
K, its all my views not for opposing your views :-)

Subbu, by changing the voice I didn't mean changing the voice as such. It's adjusting their voice slightly - giving nuances like singing in a deep voice, giving nasal touch etc. There's a lot of truth when she says "paadalai appadi amaippaargaL" - like Saroja Devi's songs will usually be high pitched. Jayalalitha's songs will be usually medium pitched. But it's a known fact that TMS modulates his voice. He sings nasal for MGR, from his naval for Sivaji and from his throat for Jai Shankar and the like. One can easily infact very easily discern this modulation. So does PS. Just play Love Birds and Kannan Ennum Mannan perai side by side. One will know the difference. Similarly listen to Thannilavu Theniraikka and Yaarukku MaappiLLai YaarO. I mean I know you would certainly have heard these songs being a PS fan but try listening to them with no preconceived notions (as to whether it's possible or not possible). Karnan songs also could be cited. There are umpteen numbers. If you listen to "Kalyaanach Chandaiyile", "Neeyedhaan Enakku Manavaatti (the lines Koduthu VaithavaL Naane etc)" and still can't see the difference that she brings in for Jayalalitha then I can't vouch for my views anymore. Ofcourse, if you can't see it then you will not see it. No offence meant.
About the contradiction I didn't mean that what PS said to me contradicted what she said in magazine interviews. It was something totally unconnected, nothing to do with this voice modulation at all.

And another thing, you only need to know the situation to render a song, I don't see why you need to know the actor/actress at all unless you are going to have to do something with that information.

K,
Paal Polave (Vanishree), VeLLimaNi (KR Vijaya), Nalandhanaa (Padmini), Andru oomai peNNallO (Savithri), Unnai Ondru Ketpen (Saroja Devi), Oru naaL iravu (Sowcar), Unnai naan Sandithen (Jayalalitha), Sonnadhu needhanaa (Devika), KaNNa karumai nira kaNNa (Vijayakumari), Sondhamillai (Sujatha), Thaayin mugam indru (Lakshmi), Nadhiyoram (Sripriya), Nee megam aanaal enna (Jayachirta), Vidiya vidiya (Sridevi)... ethanayo paadlgal for different heroines..
There could have been variation in voice' modulation based on "mood" of the song, pitch/scale, situation and even her voice status on that "recording" day etc... but am sincerely admitting that am not very sure of variations made for specific heroines by PS. I agree for a few songs like Chittu kuruvi (the staring bit was almost imitating the way in which Saroja devi pronounces).
May be, PS was also trying to express the same view, but not conveyed properly to make all of us understand clearly :-)))).. may be her "talking tamil" confused her fans :-)))
Anyway, K, you have give me an opportunity to identify the top-class songs of PS for different heroines...thanQ K... how u like that?
I really enjoyed this discussion.

Subbu, yes, you have identified great songs by PS for different heroines. One actress you left out, probably because she came later- was Saritha.
Saritha herself had a superb voice- full of subtle naunces in expression, and somehow I feel that all MDs made PS sing some memorable songs for her, though those were years of decline for PS otherwise- some examples- MSV: Kannana poo magane- Theneer thaneer, Adiye Kannamma- Agnisatchi, Kan kanda deivame- Keezhvanam Sivakkum, Indha malligaipoovuku- Kootu puzhukkal. Gangai Amaran: Maadapuravo- Imaigal, Illayaraja: Mapillaikku- Netrikkan, SG: Poo mugam sivakka -Amma, TR: Pullange peyarilathaan: Uravai kaatha kili, V Kumar: Aduthathu Sengamalam- Shankari, VS Narasimhan: Aavaram poovu and Odukira thanniyile- Achamilla Achamillai, Manasukkul utkaarndhu and Kaanal alaigaliley etc- Kalyana Agathigal.
