Actually, even many Kannadhasan's fans think of endha oor as
a 'OK-Not-Bad' kind of song only. It is just that I am attracted to
it. I don't think even the kavinjar would have thought of this song
of his as a 'high calibre' song. I am also sure that he would not have
struggled much to pen this song. My guess is that he must have done
some digging into oor names in Tamil Nadu to select names which are
at least 'closely sounding' to what he required. avarudaya PA, Mr. PA
(ahAnga, namma Panju Arunachalam) indha mAdhiri research-ukku help
paNNi iruppArO? To me ('IMO' bore adichchuduchchu!) the use of 'oors'
is cutely done (assuming most oors do exist) to add a nice attractive
element to the song and the choice of words and organization of a
stream of thoughts makes this an excellent song. These points have
caused an attraction in me to this song. Whenever I happen to listen
to this song I have quietly involved myself enjoying the mood it
creates. Of course KVM's music and PBS's singing are also important
factors for that. To me the song is high class. But I agree with you
that there is nothing very novel or innovative in this song.

SK: I think we are at the agree to disagree stage.
Several comments of yours gave me new insights into the song e.g. your remark about the words in this song being quite poetical and evoking the right mood. I find the "oor" approach so irritating that I hvnt really appreciated the beauty of the other words.
I would rate this lyric higher if Kavignar hadnt used the "oor" approach - I think that is gimmicky and algorithmic. But I never realized that places like "Katthalloor" exist! Who knows, the rest may exist too. And if they do, I would concede that this song is "cute."
On the other hand, I seem to hv struck a chord with several people with my modified algorithm. It does look contrived and there seem to be no justification for the "oor" approach. Even a diehard fan like yourself have come down from "the song stands on its own" to "many people think this is a OK - not bad song." ;-)
I hv great respect for the Kavignar and his genius. So please dont translate my stringent criticism of this lyric into disrespect for him!

Guys:
I wrote this once earlier and it moved into the Old Responses pages without anyone commenting on it. I thought that I would reproduce it here so that we can critique it.
I have a few more songs that I want to bring up. Someone should write up the lyrics of Ayiram karangaL neetti from Karnan. Here are the first lines:
Ayiram karangaL neetti
anaikkindRa thAyE potRi
aruL pongum mugaththai kAtti
iruL neekkam thanthAi potRi
Every bit of this song says something about the utility value of Sun that is not mythical but practical. Also, I have never been able to decide if the last line above is:
iruL neekkum thanthaAi potRi
or what I quoted above. Since he referred to thAi in the first line, I thought he referred to thanthai in the second line. For that, the second word should be neekkum instead of neekkam. It makes sense either way you read it.

I have put the song in RA. If you write the full
lyrics we can continue discussion.

SK & Bhoori:
I used to be a regular here sometime during Jan-Feb this year. But here are my thoughts....
I think the 'Oorr.' technique has been deliberately used. In tamil kavidhai illakanam, there is a clause where for the 'nayam' of the kavithai you can use phrases that have a inner meaning and not neccessarily a direct meaning. The example is Kaathaloor. This in the context of the song is to mean, that he travelled thru love (or kaadhal) in his life.
So I am convinced that this is an excellent one of Kavignar. If he has not used the 'Oorr' technique he could not have brought the superb lines like 'veloorai parthu viten' and 'melur povadharkku vellai vara villai ada'.
What do say...?
