  why is there a sudden lull ? Has anybody listned to "nenje gurunaadhanin" from mOhamuL ? It is said to be set up in naatakapriya. Can somebody clarify the prayogams and up/down ?

  Nenje gurunaadharin is a beautiful song indeed.
  
  Natakapriya is 10th melakarta. The notes are:
  
  s r1 g2 m1 p d2 n2 s+.
  
  Unfortunately this scale doesnt seem to be that popular. I have heard a kriti Gita vadya natana natakapriye (forgot the composer) by DKJ, which is very moving.
  
  Dont know about prayogams, will see if i can find in books.
  
  Its pratimadhyama is Shadvidamargini - also a very moving raga.

  I agree Vasu - but MLV was known to have handled these raga melas with utmost ease and has sung many Ragam Thanam Pallavis.
  
  There are very few known compositions in this raga. here is the audio link for the song Vasu mentioned

  I.R some other songs in Natakapriya are
  Paripalayamam : BAlamurali Krishna
  Yedu KInta : Thiruvottiyur Thyaggayer
  Viswanatham : Muthuswamy Dikshitar.
  This raga is also known as Nataabharana

  There is also another song in mOhamul in a less popular melakartha - i think it is kamalam pAdakamalam. The raga is ramApriya - it is the 52nd melakartha (the pratimadhyama of chakravakam). The notes for ramApriya are - s r1 g3 m2 p d2 n2 s+.
  
  Have heard only one kriti in this (by BMK in his rAgAnga ravali). Kotishwara Iyer should have one too since he had composed in all melas. I think MD also has one. Dont know about Thyagaraja. Will check up in the book.
  
  Illayaraja was in a great carnatic mood for that film perhaps - another song in that film is sollayo vaithirandu -a beautiful shanmukhapriya.
  
  Interesting all three songs from that film are set in raga ending in "priya" and all are melas.
  
  The sollayo vaithirandu pallavi starts very similar to "valli nayakane..." (again forgot composer - Mysore V. i think).

  IMO, kamalam paadakamalam, nenje gurunadhanin and another song ( not sollaayO) are great compositions. Was not very much impressed by ShaNmugapriya song though since there are so many precedents with an emphatic classicism. ANd also the version of Arunmozi was not very impressive, IMO, though. Thx for sharing info and opinions.
  
  We should once take up the songs of thaai mookaambigai and raghavendra and try dissecting. I guess they will form a good discussion as such.
  
  BTW, I would appreciate if some person drowned in the songs of MSV/KVM/GR comes and gives his/her piece of mind about some rare ragas which MSV has used. I guess the discussion has been mostly on Ilaiyaraja' songs (and mallu songs :-) )
  
  Just wanted to mention that Raveendran of His Highness fame, has been around for more than 20 years and has tuned some of the best songs in Malayalam. Also, Johnson has tuned a lot of semiclassicals in parallel. I may write and give links for some of those songs given there is not much oppposition.

  Yes I had some doubts reg the song "Kaatuley". Can you explain how it is "Natabhairavi". Maybe, using the example of some other famous song like "Andhi Mazhai Megam" (Nayakan), if I am not wrong.
  
  Can you kindly point out where the similarity between these songs.
  
  And explanation on the song "Putham Pudhu Kaalai Pon Nira Velai" also... BTW, which movie is this song from ?
