kaadhal Oviyam kaNden was the first song sujatha sang for IR.
SaravaNan..yes there is indeed a similarity in meter between andharangam yaavume and paadi vaa thendrale.
In vijay's list, I find that I could sing "neela vaan Odaiyil" in the tune of "kaalai nEra poonguyil" without any alteration. Seems lilke a sandham recycle (or copy..since neela vaana was not scored by IR)

Song of the Day: malargaL nanaindhana paniyaalE from idhayak kamalam.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/malargal.rm
- A timeless classic by KVM and Kannadasan. Sung by PS. I think it is the ultimate early-morning song. Based on raagam Mohanam. The prelude is amazing, conveys the mood of dawn perfectly with just violins and flute.
- Lyrics in our Pazhaiya Paadal Page: http://www.newtfmpage.com/ppp/malargal_nanaindhana.html
- Manisegaran mentions that KVM told him that it was his favorite song.
- Songs that capture the beauty of dawn: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/4617.5582.04.02.39.html
In this, our SK writes:
'Idhaya Kamalam' endra padaththil kaviyarasar oru azhagaana paadal ezhudi irukkiRaar. pudhidhaaga maNamaaNa oru peN, a house-wife, kaalaiyil ezhundhu neeraadi ip paadalai paaduvadhu pOl padaththil varum (KRVijaya-Ravichandran jOdi). ap paadalin pallaviyil kavinjar adhikaalai nEraththaip patri sollugiRaar:

As she begins her household work she recollects the pleasurable happenings of the previous night. 'Thunbam pOndra inbangaL' endru innOru paadalil kooRiya kavinjar, ip paadalilum solgiRaar; no one can match Kannadhasan in saying such things in a clean and subtle fashion...

Then she continues to sing her faith for her husband...

malargaL nanaindhana paniyaalE became the definition of an early-morning song; if you haven't seen the song in the movie: KR Vijaya goes about doing her usual, house-hold work in the morning, and Ravichandran follows her doing some stupid things without KRV noticing him.

KVM known as a master composer of semi-classical songs has shown his melodious side in a few compositions. malargaL nanaindhana and poontheNil kalandhu are 2 good examples.
malargaL is a personal fav of KVM and an all time fav of mine. The way susheela has sung this song is beyond desciption. This is an epitome of emotive singing which forces a teardrop or 2 especially in the third line of the charaNam even with the hardest of hearts. Based on raga mohanam, this song compares very much with 'amudhai poziyum nilave'. These are very similar. Some other songs which one must listen immediately after this song are:
(1) rasik balma - Lata - Hindi
(2) vandhadhe kungumam - chitra
(3) nilavu thoongum nEram - SPB
(4) nilavum malarum paadudhu - AMR
(5) kaadhal kadidham varaindhen - SPB
(6) manjaL prasaadavum - Chitra - Malayalam
(7) arivin nilaave - Chitra - Malayalam
(8) sirimalle neeve - SPB - telugu

bb, great one. I am a fan of the prelude too in this song. Although it is a little easier to choke someone up with Mohanam, this song will probably figure high in my all time chokers list :-) Rasik Balma, mentioned above and "Chand phir Nikla" from Paying Guest belong in this list too.
Glad to note that KVM opted for a simpler-yet-soulful melody over complex songs when he picked this song as his favourite. Nevertheless, I would credit atleast 30% of the melodic impact in the song to Mohanam, one of my favourite scales :-)

Most delighted to learn that Malarkal Nanainthana is the song of the day. A great song in all angles- lyrics, music composition, singing and filming.
One of the all time favourites of KVM.

bb- thanks for this lovely song. Punnagai Arasi, in her early years, and how alluring she looked in this song (andha kaalathu colourla!)
PS has sung many such similar songs - i.e., the wife waking up in the morning and doing household work-sometimes the song would span her activities throughout the day, and would end with the husband returning home from work in the night!
In this connection, songs which immediately come to mind: Vellikkizhamai vidiyum velai (Nee), Oru aalayam aagum mangai manathu (Sumathi En Sundari, though for a film shooting), Radhayin Nenjame (Kanimuthu papa)- even the immortal 'Alayamaniyin osai naan ketten' is a song in a similar strain.

Saravanan:
Regarding 'oru Alayam Agum mangai manadhu', the movie starts with the song as film shooting scene. Later in the movie J sings the same song again to Sivaji.

Beautiful composition! Indeed an all-time classic by KVM.
Though mainly in mOhanam, the song does have some 'foreign notes' coming at the end of charaNams (eg. 'Ethanai ethanai sugam vaithAn'), which only seem to enhance the melody's appeal.
And PS' rendering is flawless.. and her diction is beyond compare.. Take the 2nd charaNam (that ends with the words
Etri
Oottri
pOtri
and give it to today's singers in TFM.. 90% of them are bound to pronounce the words incorrectly.
MS,
The songs you listed are all great, and illustrate the many shades of 'mOhanam' our MDs brought out through film music.

This song reminds me of another song - poonjittu kannangaL, ponmaNi dheebangaL. Lovely song (and a candidate for SOTD if I may), but it does remind me of the day my mom, my brother and I shed bucketloads of tears after watching that godforsaken movie (thulAbhAram) on DD a long long time back :-)

Song of the Day: endhan nenjil neengaatha from kalaignan.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/endhan.rm
- A song that gives me goose bumps every time I listen to it. Sung by KJY/SJ. MD: IR. Lyrics: Vaali. Wonder how IR got inspired to produce this piece, in a totally ridiculous movie. SJ sema keechchuk kural-lle paadiyirukkaanga.
- Raagam Nalinakanthi. In the Classical IR series, we find:
Nalinakanthi is another Sankarabaranam janyam. Structurally, it is closely related to Kedaram. It has got a sharper U turn (vakram!) in its arohanam. Sa Ga Ri Ma Pa Ni Sa. The avarohanam is Sa Ni Pa Ma Ga Ri Sa. So kedaram differs from Nalinaganthi in only in the arohanam. Ofcourse, you can sing the avarohanam of Nalinakanthi as it is, while in Kedaram, you have to add some special dealings of the swaras. Illayaraja has one good Nalinakanthi in Kamal's kalaignan. It came as a surprise in that movie because all the other songs were 'kuppai'. Enthan nenjil nee paadum has been sung by Jesudoss and Janaki. Illayaraja captures the essence of the raga in the start of the song: Sa Ga Ri Ma Ga Ri Sa Ni Sa Ga Ri Ma GA...There is no deviation in that song at all. In the second interlude there is a short thara sthayi swara alapana too. He should have avoided that alapana, and that person too, in that song! (I think it is he who has rendered that short piece!). It seems like he has used gottu vadyam in that song.

Nalinakanthi is a janyam of Sarasangi i think.( I may be wrong but paditha ninaivu.Let me confirm this in the evening)The interludes of this song follow the song "nee oru kadhal sangeetham" from Nayagan. An absolutely brilliant song from IR in this hopeless movie.
