Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.

bb: you made my day. i am not sure if this song was in MS's list, but man, this must be among the top ten of SPB solo (which in my list would include padaiththAnE brahma dhEvan, veNNala kAsE mallelu pUsE, aNNan oru kOvilenRAl, Oh pApA lAli, there is a fantastic early days (of SPB) telugu song ...oh dam my memory :( ...).
great selection to end with week with.

aruL, i totally agree. this will surely be among the top 10 spb solos. i wonder what the picturization was for this song? i don't expect it to be great :-) indhap padam release aanadhO?
Cinema Virumbi, i believe Bharathidasan was alive for this song. i read somewhere that he was mad at MSV/TKR for splitting a word into two meaningless halves to fit to tune, for some song.

yes isaiosai. thanks for reminding that song. bb: you should consider hosting such songs once in a rare while.
bb: you are asking the wrong person such questions :-). i have no idea about those things. when i think about the picturisation of this song, i always confuse this with a famous song (composed by MSV?) which has some wonderful violin solo. the picturisation goes like this: a blind woman to whom this man with violin plays the violin and sings. what song is this?

Are you referring to 'VAn nilA nilA alla, un vAlibam nilA' from 'Pattina Pravesam'?
nandA en nilA is one of my all time SPB favorites. What a voice man!! He brings in the classical nuances of Madhuvanti with his flawless singing... Sample his rendition of the line,, 'Agamam kaNda Seetayum indru rAghavan Naa.........nendru thirumbi vandhALo. Can you believe this man has had no classical music training?
I think we should include this number in the list of songs that have the longest 'pallavi's. In fact, its Pallavi is much longer than that of the MoondrAm piRai song, 'vAnengum tanga viNmeengaL'.
NandA nee en nilA nilA
nAyakan madiyil kANbadhu sugamE
nANam EnO vA vA
vizhi meenAdum vizhi
Mozhi thEnAdum mozhi
kuzhal poovAdum kuzhal
ezhil neeyAdum ezhil
minni varum silayil mOhanak kalayE
vaNNa vaNNa mozhiyil vAnavar amudhE
Asai nenjin deivam neeyE Adi niRkum deepam neeyE
pesugindRa veeNai neeyE
kani idhazh amudhinai vazhangida aruginil vA
The lyrics are classy. Who's the lyricist?

Yes..nandha finds a place in y SPB solos list. A similar set of SPB songs in telugu:
(1) Ye divilo virisina paarijaatamu
(2) oh cheli..idhi tholi paata
(3) mallelu poose - I listened to this once for 2.5 hrs in repeat mode :-)
(4) sirimalle neeve
(5) madhumaasa vELalo ..hmm..butter would wonder if it is harder than SPB's voice.
(6) kadhile mEghama - a fantastic number from MSV-SPB
(7) naa hrudhayapu kOvilalo- thirumagaL thEdi vandhaaL
(8) aNuvu aNuvula velasina deva
(9) kaluvuku chandrudu entho dhooram - superb lilting number.
(10) merise meghamaalika
(11) aaveshamantha
(12) aa kanulalo
(13) shivaranjani navaraagini
(14) nenoka prema pipaasini
(15) jaamu raththiri jaabilamma
some kannada numbers:
(1) kelaga nimageega
(2) barayuve ninagaagi
(3) aashaya bhaava (same as mallelu poose)
I can hardly understadn a word of these songs. But I listen to these just for S - P - B :-)
One tamil solo which I left out in my list is "andharangam yaavume solvadhendraal paavame" - a stunner from IR-MSV. Its poorer cousin is telugu's manchu kurise vELalo.

bb,
Re Barathidasan , I read that he was peeved that in OR Iravu his Thunbam Nergayil song was used for a romantic situation which was not what he had intended. Probably you are referring to Sange Muzhangu in Kalankarai Villakkam. But which word I do not know- probably Sirgazhi had to break up or strech to be in step with thew tune!

bb- thanks (though belated) for this outstanding song! Yes, this film was released- in 1977. It starred Vijayakumar,Sumitra and Fadafat Jayalakshmi. Ira. Pazhanisami wrote the lyrics for this song.
Another wonderful song from the film is 'Oru kaadhal samrajyam kannil varaindhaal'-JC-TK Kala (Lyrics: Na. Kamarasan). The other songs - 'Kannukkutti Chellamma'-SJ and 'Kovilukku poojai seyya'-PS are ordinary stuff.
MS- liked your list immensely! Btw, Its news to me that MSV also have a hand in 'Andharangam yaavume'.
Reg. Bharathidasan- he died in 1964. Both Panjavaranakkili and Kalankarai Vilakkam came in 1965. Maybe the record came out when Bharathidasan was still alive?

"I read somewhere that he was mad at MSV/TKR for splitting a word into two meaningless halves to fit to tune, for some song."
Where did you read it? Which song? Which word?
BTW, do we have a list of Bharathidhasan songs that have been used in TFM?

MS- Ever noticed the similarity between 'Andharangam yaavume' and 'Paadi vaa thendrale'(JC- Mudivalla Aarambam)? Both are by IR.
Btw, SPB gives wonderful variations in each 'Eppadi eppadi'. 'Devathai ilandevi' was another great song from the same 'Aayiram Nilave Vaa'

Saravanan,
'andharangam yaavumE...' goes in the form of a lover telling his friend (alter ego types?) about the plus points of his beloved. It even has details like ' machchangaL eththanai.......sollattumaa?' and ends like ' meedhiyai naan uraippathum nee rasippathum paNbaadu illai!!!'. My friend used to comment: 'ellaaththayum solliyaachchu! innum enna paNbaadu baakki irukku?!!!!'

Song of the Day: kaadhal Oviyam kaNdEn from kavikkuyil.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/kaadhal_oviyam.rm
- A beautiful ghazal type song. Great singing by Sujatha. MD: IR. This is one of Sujatha's earliest songs. I think it came around the same time as Gayathri (kaalaip paniyil). Kaalaip paniyil was featured on SOTD earlier.
- Thread on Sujatha: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/19796.9731.11.05.38.html .
- I don't recollect off-hand lots of ghazal type numbers by IR. Can someone list? There is one in idhu namma bhoomi.

bb- thanks for another great song. Kavikkuyil had all excellent songs. But I don't remember if 'Kaadhal Oviyam' song appeared in the film.
Oh yes, the song from 'Idhu Namma Bhoomi'- 'Vaana mazhai poley' is truly a spellbinding song. Great lyrics and heavenly voice - Nejamaave 'Nilaikkum gaanamidhu' thaan! Hope you'll bring it soon :-))

bb,
Though not exactly Ghazal, I remember the following two songs which fall into some kind of Qawwali category:
1. 'aaNdavan bhoomiyil aayiram bEdhangaL aEn? naanenum eNNam koNda .... illaatha aEzhai nenjangaL ellOrum needhi sollungaL!'
A non-IR song in some KRV film of early 70's.
2. ' naagooru pakkaththila nambaLOda pEtta(i)! Raavuththar nikka(h)vula namakku nalla vEtta(i)!'
-'VeLLai rOja', Sivaji and YGM, I think by IR.

A few other songs that are not strictly ghazals but have a ghazalish feel, off the top of my head:
1. Udhaya geetham paaduven, SPB - a strong candidate possibly in this category, though not a personal favourite of mine. Paatu azhugai :-)
2. Thedum kann paarvai, MSV-IR, Mella thiorandhadhu kadhavu - has been already mentined earlier in some thread, a decent song.
3. Kaalai nera poonguyil, IR - Amman koil kizhakkaale - a beautiful song and gets a strong reco from me for SOTD some day :-)
4. Neela vaana odaiyil, GA - a very good composition and sung very well by SPB with all the extra sangathis when he goes "Neela vaaaaaaaana odaiyil" .
I will try to add more as and when I recollect.
